Brock Surefire felt like his brains were going to burst out of the back of his head. "So this is overdrive huh? I feel like my internal organs are gonna bust." And as soon as he cleared area 17 he knew he had to disengage before he did serious damage to himself. "Flight training did say not to exceed the designated time limit. I see why now." Trying to ease out of overdrive he would end up accidentally pulling to full stop and shifting the mode selector mode built into the control stick with a safety lock into humanoid form.
This mistake would be a wind fall for him because as soon as he did complete transformation the enemy R-70 that was chasing him would zoom by also. The pilot of that unit also utilizing its overdrive system which was more of a prolonged rocket booster that it was equipped with that jettisoned after it was spent. "Ensign Surefire sniping targets" He would chant to himself as he quickly calculated the enemies speed and path to see that it was headed for a semi clustered pack of meteors from the nearby planet system. "I got you this time. No one with our name misses." Firing off three rounds , one centered on the R-70's back side and two others aimed at the most likely dodge path he would fire off high impact explosive smart rounds.
"That can't be. . . " Captain Talon would say out loud involuntarily as he saw what Brock did when he stopped and converted modes accidentally. "When did Trigger teach him that Gorge?"
"No idea capn" Gorge would say on the right wing formation of Captain Talon. "Maybe we should let the kid handle it?"
"We're still engaging the two R-70's ahead Gorge.
"Aye aye capn." Gorge would respond as the two headed for area 19.
Brock Surefires shots connected with the enemy unit but not the way he wanted them to. As soon as the enemy R-70 pulled up and to the right to avoid the incoming rounds it happened to jettison the rocket boosters and the round that was meant to hit dead center ended up connecting with the boosters. It was then that the pilot of the R-70 decided to hail him on the laser range channel which was used in close contact areas only.
"Your very talented. I did not expect to face the legendary sniper himself today." There was a heavy eastern european accent with the voice.
Brock being young and easily pushed would respond back. "Well ya better watch out then." Firing off another round he would convert back to fighter mode cut off the laser signal. Opening up the missile pods on the booster pack he would spiral his way while steadily pulling upwards and launch a three cluster each 360 turn. After doing it four times with the right pod releasing 12 he would convert to bird mode and fire off the remaining 24 on it all locked onto one target. The enemy R-70.
"Hiro are you getting this on recording?" Captain Talon would ask seeing the battle data that was being fed to him from a remote probe he dropped behind for Hiro to check on Brock with.
"I can't believe it myself. Its almost like his green horn skills disappeared. Currently showing that his battle efficiency rose by 50% and climbing with each moment."
"Keep me updated. We're about to engage the two enemy R-70 units." Captain Talon would nod in silent approval.
The enemy R-70 and his ZF-31 turned situations finally and Brock knew he had to keep the pressure on it. The loss of the temporary rocket boosters on the enemy unit seemed to of made it more agile than before making things more dangerous if he was going to be chased after. Seeing the first three cluster of missiles get shot down and nine others lead off by decoys he would take a path that would curve him into what he saw as the interception path.
"Maybe we underestimated him?" Lt Gorge would say as they began to approach area 19 and began to sweep for visual confirmation. "Looks like they chose one helluva place to camp. They got alot of space rock covering them."
Captain Talon already switched over to heat sensors would frown and respond back. "Looks like they got heat generators out too. Watch your backside Gorge"
"Smart of them to lead people into this area. You wouldn't know what to do if you were out flanked and you can't detect them." Captain Talon would comment back.
"Maybe they were commissioned to take out the specialized contractors?" Gorge would ask back as he looked around for signs of the enemy.
"I got you!" Brock would exclaim as he fired off a round , this time selecting an advanced homing round , not quite as powerful as the high impact explosive smart rounds designed to explode around the general areas of the target if they missed. Seeing that his cluster of missiles that were chasing the enemy were nearly gone he would continue to follow after firing off the shot ready to fire off another one if neccesary.
"Captain Talon they moved out of remote probe range. I'm still reading Brock and the R-70 engaged in combat though." Hiro would update as he moved towards the area.
"Try to get a lock on these R-70's in area 19. They're masking their birds."
"I can't get much either. I'm getting gibberish also."
"Spread the drones out then. We'll cover you if necessary"
"Already on it" Hiro would respond back as he began to set the drones to aggro mode if anything wasn't in their friendly list.
The enemy R-70 seemed to pause in mid flight as the round connected dead on near the back of the canopy. The canopy would blow off almost immediately after and the pilot ejected at a rapid rate away from the R-70 which soon got hit with the remaining missiles turning it to another husk of space wreckage. "Did he do that on purpose?" Flying by he would continue on towards area 19.
"Found anything yet Hiro?" Captain Talon would ask as they wove a carefully planned path through the field of asteroids.
"Nothing out of the ordinary. They should be along the path that Brock was on though."
Lt Gorge would cut in. "I got two hot on my tail!" His ZF-31 was already zipping towards Captain Talons in a long arc when suddenly one of them burst into a quick burst of flames on the back right pulse booster.
Brock Surefire began to find that he was more efficient with the advanced homing round than the high impact explosive smart rounds and took advantage of it. The enemy R-70 he hit would soon totter abit before the pilot of it ejected right before his second round hit what his data said was the power core. The fighter would explode in a brilliant flash as soon as the power core was damaged severely from the armor piercing round rupturing the containment field. The remaining one seeing that it was outnumbered by two would take disengage and take off.
Already scanning around for more targets he found the down signal emitting heavily armored sniper unit and grabbed it like a shield with the left arm of his fighter which was free.
Switching over to the laser frequency Captain Talon would signal Brock. "Ensign Surefire you have alot to explain." A tone only a angry commander could create. "You went radio black out to show boat didn't you!"
Brock looking around was surprised at the presense of his squad. "When did you guys get here captain?"
"Your not going to answer my question ensign?!" Captain Talon not knowing the circumstance of the radio black out would continue on.
"I took a hit on my comm unit captain. Couldn't call out or receive to save my life." Brock would respond back sheepishly.
"If you take damage on critical parts you know the protocal green horn!" Already turning around with Gorge and Hiro in formation he would head back towards the unit carrier. "Form up green horn , maybe this time you'll keep up." Captain Talon was genuinely relieved that Brock survived his mistake. Thinking to himself he would smile at the thought of what just happened. "Just like his old mans first battle. Is it fate that he loses all radio and downs two aces in his first battle too?"
