“Asha? I know where you are so there’s no point hiding.” My big brother called. “Asha? Where are you?”
Though my big brother wasn’t my big brother anymore, he was an evil creation, a murderous blood sucking thief, a vampire. Close enough to a zombie, but not falling apart and doesn’t want to eat your out brains, instead, they crave blood.
His super human sense, speed and strength isn’t going to help me escape, I mean I don’t think I’ll make this out alive.
I see his shadow, but I give myself away by gasping. I manage to scramble out of the bush that now is damaged from me ripping myself out of it.
I sprint towards the nearest house, it’s the only protection I have, because they can’t come in houses, apartments or cottages unless they’re invited, even though people don’t know vampires exist. I only know that they exist because I’ve been raised to hunt and kill them.
As I turn around, I see a guy, not just any guy, Jake, I almost jumped in fright, I was so busy being scared I forgot this was Jake’s house, “What are you doing?”
I scramble around my head to come up with an excuse, “Um...Someone was following me...I got scared and forgot this was your house...”
I start to feel hot and sweaty, I cringe waiting for an answer, it took him awhile, “Okay...Do you want me to go out there and see if they’re still there?”
He starts toward the door, “NO!”-Jake literary jumped out of his pants-“Don’t...If it’s okay with you can I stay here for awhile...maybe until light comes back?”
He starts to back away from the door, “Yeah sure I guess... why that long?”
“Because this person has being doing it every day and is only doing it at night. So I’m guessing he’ll wait for me all night if he has to.”
“Oh”
“Yeah, would you like something to drink?”
“Yes please,” I let out a puff.
As we walk around to the kitchen I look around the house carefully, some new DC skate shoes were hanging over his old red velvet arm chair. A little bronze eagle was sitting on the arm chair. Just before we walked into the kitchen, there was a painting hanging on the wall, there was a wolf and a pale white-which looked like a ghost- getting ready to attack each other. All I could do was stare at it, I was thinking I was hallucinating, but there it was, hanging right in front of me, I wanted to yell at Jake and demand why he had it in his house.
When Jake realised I didn’t follow and found out what I was staring at he sighed, “That was my Great Grandpa’s he gave it to my Dad and when my Dad disappeared I got most of his belongings...”
“Why did he have it?” I was going to lose it soon, I looked down at my necklace it was a Red Jasper gemstone I lifted my hand to squeeze it and took a deep breath in then let it out.
“I don’t really want to talk about it.”
I started to get angry again, “Please! I need to know! No one has this unless they’re a...”
“A what?”
“You know what I’m talking about, explain it to me! This is important! You’re endangering everyone including yourself!”
I started to calm down slowly after that, yelling made me feel better. Jake being cautious, making sure I’d got everything off my chest waited a moment to speak, “I’m sorry I made you angry...”
I sucked in a breath again and then let it out quick so I could speak, “Apology accepted.”
“I know what you’re talking about, yes my Great Grandfather was a vampire hunter but we’re not just vampire hunters, we’re werewolves...”
I gasped, I always knew there were werewolves as well but I’ve always wanted to meet one and this is just exciting!
He saw my gasp and thought it was bad and started to take a step back.
“Sorry! Just let me get myself back together... There! Sorry it’s just I’ve dreamed about meeting a werewolf for ages!”
He seemed a bit embarrassed, “Um...that’s okay it’s just normally people are scared of us even vampire hunters...”
I was shocked, it’s didn’t seem possible that vampire hunters would be scared of werewolves, “Really? That’s weird! I’m surprised vampire hunters are scared of werewolves, it seems....I don’t know abnormal.”
He chuckled, “Yeah I guess that is a bit bizarre...so Ashleigh do you want to still get a drink? We’ll talk about me and....this mess while we’re drinking.”
“Sure!”
As we walk into the kitchen, I realise that it’s the cleanest kitchen I’ve ever seen!
“Wow! This kitchen is really clean!”
“Thanks, there isn’t much to do around here except clean mainly. Do you want green or orange cordial?”
“Orange please”
“Do you want something to eat?”
“Oh yes please!”-Thinking about food makes my stomach rumbled-“What do you have?”
“I think we have one cupcake left and maybe the same with the strawberries”-He just starts to look into the pantry and the refrigerator-“Yep one strawberry left and a cupcake which one?”
“Cupcake please”
“Where are all these manners coming from? I didn’t think you had any,” He chuckles.
I kick him really hard, I also have my Converse on and they seem to hurt more than runners, “OW! What was that for?”
I started to laugh, “For being a jerk!”
“You know I was only joking.”
I stop laughing, “I know but you deserved that.”
We mucked around for a bit after that, then everything got serious, “Wow! So you can heal after a few seconds if you cut yourself or something?”
“Yes but if we broke a couple of bones it would take longer like a day or two.”
“Wow...”
“You say wow a lot, what’s with that?” Jake chuckles.
I slap his arm, “Jerk! Because it’s fascinating! Unlike me being stalked by a monster!”
I thought he would go onto a different subject but he growled, “You mean you were being stalked by a vampire?”
I was quiet for a few seconds, and then all of a sudden he started to shake, “Whoa! Jake! Calm down! You’ll hurt me! Come on down! You’ll phase! Jake!”
When he realises what is actually happening he stops shaking.
“Whoa sorry Asha, I just got really angry that someone would even think of hurting you, you’re my best friend and my little sister to me and if I lost you would life be worth living? Not to me.” I start to blush, things like that make me embarrassed.
“Are you okay now?” I’m still worried.
“Yeah I’m fine, so who is this vampire?”
I look down and tears start to slip from my eyes, “Jordan...”
I break out in sobs, “Oh Asha! How’d it happen?”
“W-w-w-e-e-e were h-h-h-h-un-n-n-t-t-i--in-n-n-g for a v-v-a-am-m-m-p-p-pi-i-re and he was too close a-a-an-n-n-d-d-d he go-o-o-t b-b-i-t-t-t-t-e-e-en-n...”
“And you escaped just in time?”
I nodded.
“Oh Asha...” He hugs me tight, “Um...Asha your mascara is smudged,” he chuckles but I see he’s really worried. I chuckle once, and then get up to wash my face in the bathroom.
“Jake? Can I go to bed now?” I call.
He walks in, “Yeah sleep in my bed, and I’ll sleep in the other room...unless you want some company?”
“Yeah I don’t think I want to be alone right now...”
Once I’m in bed tucked in Jake lies down next to me, I shiver, it’s getting colder.
Jake comes and hugs me, he’s really warm, “Thanks Jake.”
I fall asleep pretty quickly, but morning comes just the same as well, “Jake?”
I feel nothing but creases of the bed, I manage to stumble out of bed like I did last night in the bush, but this time I fall and make a loud thud.
“Asha you’re awake!”
I look up and Jake’s leaning against the door looking very bright, “Well, well, well oh isn’t it Jake the bold!” I roll my eyes.
He laughs, “Why aren’t you grumpy little girl?”
I roll my eyes again, “What’s for breakfast?”
“Rice Bubbles, or should I say bubble pops?”
Jake can be so immature sometimes...
As we walk downstairs he asks randomly, “Do you want light or creamy milk?”
“Um...light.”
“Okay...” He starts to laugh.
“What?”
“Nothing...” He started to snicker.
“WHAT?”
“It’s just I was going to see if you noticed what I’m wearing...” He laughs so hard he falls on the ground.
I realise he was wearing some dodgy homemade t-shirt he had made, and it had printed “Kick her” on the back and on the front, “She has no clue that ‘Some Ride To Fly’ see?”
“What’s with the print?” I was really annoyed, I hate when he treats me like some dumb blonde.
“I wanted to see how’d you react, and it was the perfect reaction!”
I grind my teeth, “Don’t! Don’t push me!”
He gets up and we walk to the kitchen, I ignore him until after breakfast.
“Will you speak already?”
“I am, I just wanted some revenge, and it worked perfectly!”
He pokes his tongue out at me like a five year old and I just roll my eyes again.
“Have you grown up at all?”
“I don’t think I ever did.”
The rest of the day passes quickly and I don’t do much except explore the house, but when I go down to the basement I am shocked that Jake’s father had such an obsession with Volvo’s, he literary has a whole Volvo Board, that is really obsessive!
The rest of the day I just ended up drawing or writing, mainly drawing eyes, when Jake saw he got really confused, “What’s with the eye?”
“I like drawing them!”
“Okay...”
I didn’t notice that it was a nice day until Jake pulled the curtains across, “Whoa it’s nice today...not for long though stupid clouds!”
“Hey! Let’s go outside before it gets dark and before you know who comes out...”
“Okay! But I’m going on your BMX bike!”
“Okay but just make sure you don’t crash into a wall!” He chuckles.
“Don’t worry! I see the road looks pretty clear.”
As well rush out the air felt different, eerie, it was creepy, the road didn’t look normal anymore it looked...deserted.
The street, the names, it didn’t look modern anymore, it seemed digital, it seemed lonely.
“Jake...” My voice trails off.
The clouds cover the sky, the sun is blocked on more light is coming through the clouds.
Suddenly something emerges from behind the Oak tree across the road.
Jake growls “Leave her alone!”
“Why? Are you going to die for her? And end up like your Dad did?”
His growl’s getting more vicious, “He did not die! She’s not going to become one of you! Why change from hunting what you are to being one?”
“Because I never knew the advantages, the speed the strength, the speed, and the senses,” Jordan just grinned.
“Jordan? Why do I need to be one of you? Please tell me why!”
“Because then you could be my little sister again.”
“You’ll always be my big brother but please! I’m begging don’t make me one of you! Please!”
“I’m sorry my little Asha but I can’t, we need to be together forever!”
“Please Jordan! Please! I don’t want Jake to get hurt! Please! Please!” Tears start to escape but I wipe them away.
“I thought I knew you Ashleigh! I thought you would want to be beautiful and glorious instead of plain and boring!”
“No Jordan! I want to be me! I don’t want to kill and suck blood from innocent people! I want to be plain and boring Ashleigh Browne! I want to grow old and have kids and get married! I don’t want you to end it for me.”
Jordan takes another step forward, “Jake-!” It’s too late Jordan lunges for Jake, and snaps his neck as soon as he gets his hands around his throat. Jake’s eyes go blank, and his body goes limp. I scream, and then fall to the ground and start to break into tears, “I-I-I hate you Jordan! I hate you even if you do change me I’ll kill you!”
“Oh yeah, that’s what I said, but you won’t, you’ll never betray me!”
Jordan gets up and walks over to stand over me, he leans over me I put my hands over my face, but through the cracks I see Jordan’s fangs shoot down I fight effortlessly to stop him but he sinks his teeth into my neck and everything goes black.
When my eyes open, I see everything clearer I can see in the corner of my eye Jordan playing with some twig off a branch.
I see everything! My human eyes may as well have been blind.
His head snaps up as soon as he realises I’m awake, “Ah darling Asha! You have awakened! See what I told you, you don’t hate me anymore.”
Except he was wrong I hated him with every cell of my body, he killed the person I loved most now he must die! Except I have to surprise him, “Yes Jordan you were right, I’m sorry for even saying those horrible words.”
“It’s okay I understand, it’s only natural for a humans to act like that, that’s how they’re were made.”
I feel thirsty, dehydrated, but I don’t crave just any liquid, I don’t crave water, its blood I crave!
I know how I could kill him, I just have to rip his head off and shove something hard and sharp enough to go through his chest.
There! The butcher’s knife in Jake’s pocket! As Jordan turns I run to Jake, and grab the knife and shove it in my pants so he won’t know it’s there.
“Are you coming? You’re probably thirsty.”
“Yes Jordan I’m coming, oh blood is exactly what I need!”
Jordan didn’t turn or notice that I’d moved to grab the knife so I walk faster to catch up to Jordan but just behind him, so I can rip his head off.
One, two, three! I lunge at Jordan-Completely oblivious that I was just behind him and face full of shock- and manage not to have any trouble with Jordan’s struggles. As I inch in I cut deeper and deeper until I find the softest part or his neck and I rip off his head, and throw it over on the road. His body is still moving, so with the knife I plunge it through Jordan’s heart, and his body goes limp. Disgusted with myself, I chuck that on the side of the road as well.
I don’t feel any better but I need to bury Jake properly. I rush over to Jake’s limp corpse and run and top speed to the nearest forest.
