Kalla placed a hand over her chest, and leaned forward so her hair covered both sides of her face.
"Hi." she mumbled to Matt. "I do that sometimes. You don't have to freak out." she added. Matt looked at her with curiosity written all over his face. Kalla laughed. "Your breath quickened to the point where you were worried. It started when I fell, so I was able to find the cause quickly." Matt again looked at Kalla as if expecting answers. Kalla smiled and lifted up her head. Matt looked at the door. A man with large arms and a rather tight leather outfit stepped through the door.
"Evaluation." he grumbled. Every child except for Kalla and Matt ran to thier rooms. The man grabbed Kalla's arm and yanked her up. He pulled her close as if they were in love, and placed his hand over her fragile-looking chest. "What size you wearin' now?" he grumbled. Matt hid behind the stairway to see what else he would do. Miss Charlene was gone.
"38 D." she mumbled. The man took her into the office and pulled every curtain down on the windows. Then, he grabbed the bottom of Kalla's shirt and pulled it up over her head. Next, he unbuttoned her pants and pulled them down to reveal a black thong. He placed his hands on the back of her black bra, and nodded.
"Alright." he barked. "I guess I can't do nothin' today. But, tomorrow! Tomorrow's matin' day for ev'ry kid twelve and older." the man threw her shirt at her her face and left the room. Kalla quickly got dressed, tears streaming down her face, and ran out of the room. Matt quickly grabbed her arm.
"Kalla! What the hell was that!?" he thundered.
"Inspection." Kalla answered. She swallowed hard, but tears still showed in her voice. "You'll have to endure it worse tomorrow so be ready."
"Kalla," Matt began.
"I can take care of myself!" she screamed. Kalla pulled away from him and ran to her room.
"Matt, tell Braken Tarpt that mating day is cancelled." Miss Charlene said happily. Matt just ran up to Kalla's room and walked in.
"You just don't give up, do you!? I don't even know why you get nervouse around me. I'm just another girl." Kalla fiddled with her locket.
"Kalla, you are not just another girl. and no, I don't give up... when I think someone's worth it."
Kalla looked up at Matt's five-eleven figure. She was a mere four-eleven herself, and rather small and petite. Fragile, I guess.
"Matt? You're the only person that's cared about me since my parents died. I... I want to show you something. Wanna' come?" Kalla stood up.
"Umm... sure, but where are we going?"Kalla just grabbed his hand and pulled him gently down the stairs. They went out the door and all the way through the yard to the begining of the woods. They kept going to a small, grass paved clearing.
"Matt, I am blind. But I can hear. Close your eyes, and don't think about anything. Focus on the sounds of the forest. I can see chipmunks scurrying up a birk tree. A young Shiinou Indian peeling bark from a tree with a pocket knife and glueing it to a rock-made bird house with maple sap. What do you see?" Kalla grabbed his hand and placed it on her chest. Matt could feel the steady heartbeat of the girl he loved, and yet he had only known her for a day.
"Moose, grazing in fields." he mumbled.
"Farther." Kalla urged. He listened.
"Young wolf pups sipping water from a sparkling, blue stream. Crackling camp fires... fireing of shot guns... yowling wolves shouting of men." Matt gasped and opened his eyes.
"See how different, how real everything seems when you can only picture what it looks like? See how you can feel the anger, rage, fear and astonishment radiating from both wolf and human? It's hard, but once you make sence of it, you only know that you can't escape the pain. Matt, how exactly can you love me, if you've only known me for a mere amount of hours?" Kalla reluctantly let Matt's hand drop. It felt nice, hearing his name escape her lips. That beautiful, chiming voice speaking something he wished molded with hers.
"I can... sence things, Kalla. I just..." Matt didn't finished. He just kissed her. The two must have lost time for about three and a half to four minutes.
"Kalla! Matt!" Miss Charlene called. The kids gently and reluctantly pulled apart. They raced back to the orpahanage.
A steaming smell of burning wood, dusted cobble stones. The sounds of creeking wheels, screaming, screaching, pain. Water, splashes. Flashes of grey and metal.
Kalla woke up. Since she didn't really see what happened that night her parents died, her dreames changed every night. Kalla again drifted to sleep.
"Kalla, you aren't just another girl. And no, I don't give up... when I think someone's worth it." Matt's words replayed in her mind as the sceenery of them kissing in the woods made it's presence in her mind clear.
