• I grabbed my friend and ran out of the burning building. I was too scared to look back. I felt my friend jerk out of my arms. A board, burning, fell on top of her. I ran to her and fell to my knees. She was unconscious. I put my my index finger and middle finger on her neck. She still had a pulse but it was faint. I lifted the board; I bit my lower lip as my hands burned. I knelt by her putting my burning hands underneath her. I lifted her up, her legs over my left arm and her middle back over my right. I struggled under the weight of her and the smoke. My world was dimming but I fought to stay awake. My friend’s life depended on it. I struggled through burning debris towards the burnt down door. When I reached the door, I gasped as cold, autumn wind hit my face. Relief spread through me. I collapsed to my knees and hugged my friend. Tears streamed down my face. I laughed a little and whispered to my friend, “We made it, everything will be okay.” I cried and laughed at the same time. Firefighters ran over to us, shouting to other men at the scene. They lifted my friend out of my arms and took her away. A fireman lifted me up off the ground and away from the burning building. I shut my eyes and breathed a sigh of relief. Then I heard nothing or saw nothing. My world was turned dark.
