The rain was an endless waterfall. The wind whispered throughout the forest, and the lightning would occaisonally light up the sky for a short moment. Two yellow foxes were sprinting through the woods. One carrying a baby. The mother looked at the father with fear in her eyes.
"Honey. We can't hide from them anymore."
The father closed his eyes, then looked towards the ground in anger.
"I know Rodas... I know."
"Then what are we going to do?"
The father began to tear up.
"Hide him in that tree." He pointed at a rotten tree with a large hole in it.
"Cover up the hole with leaves. But just enough for breathing."
"What are we going to do then?"
Rodas already knew the answer but she didn't want to hear it.
"We will have to fight them off."
"But Klegg! They'll kill us."
"I know..."
"I'm not-"
"Don't you see Rodas! If we die the Amphibines will think the yellow fox breed is dead. Extinct. Matthias will be alive. He's only a few months old. He has his whole life ahead of him. If he dies today, he doesn't get to experience love, happiness, friendship and life. And our breed will die out. We won't get to see Matthias walk for the first time. Or say "Mommy" and "Daddy" for his first words. Let that be someone elses joys. I want..." He paused for a moment.
"I want Matthias to live the life that we will never get to live."
Rodas began to sob, because she knew he was right. She put Matthias in the tree and filled it with enough leaves to hide his scent and allow him to breath. Rodas and Klegg both gave Matthias a kiss and said goodbye. As painful as it was, they then ran towards the direction of the Amphibines.
The howls of the yellow foxes echoed through the forest that night.
A near by pack heard the final howls of the yellow foxes. "Daddy what was that?" A little blue fox of 2 yrs of age, looked up at her father. The white wolf sniffed the air and growled. "Something has invaded our territory." The rest of the pack began to whisper amongst themselves.
"Kage are we going to check things out?"
The white wolf looked at his Pack and then at his beloved mate and daughter. He nodded slowly. "Yume stay with me,,,"
He placed the young fox on his back, he and his pack began to follow the echos.
"Daddy it smells funny here..." Yume whined.
"Hush Yume..."
She began to look around curiously. The pack watched in horror as the Amphibines dragged two yellow foxes away. "Kage what will they do with them?"
The white wolf cringed. "He's gonna turn them into his new trophies..."
The pack gasped with shock. They remained quiet until the Amphibines were gone. The white wolf set Yume down gently and began to walk slowly with the dark blue fox female. "Mommy, Daddy where are you going?"
"We're going to refresh the boundries. Stay here with the rest of the pack."
Yume pouted and rested her back against a rotten tree. "Okies..." Her parents left silently.
Inside the tree, Matthias's stomach growled. He was hungry and began to cry. Yume's ears twitched and she began to look around curiously. One of the pack females heard it too. Yume padded towards her. "Hikari could you hold me up?" The black speckled grey wolf nodded and lifted Yume up. Yume began to sniff the air. Hikari's tail began to twitch. Hikari's tail then got into the hole in the tree. Matthias saw something near his muzzle. He bit it and then heard a loud yipe. Hikari reached into the hole and felt fur. She pulled Matthias out and was unsure of what to do. Hikari set Yume down and decided to give the little fox to her. "Look what it is."
Yume looked at Hikari and then back at the small yellow furry bundle. She moved the blanket from his face and gasped at the small fox. "Hai there..." She whispered, poking his nose gently. Matthias sneezed and giggled. He grabbed Yume's muzzle and attemtped to pull her to him. Hikari thought it was cute and smiled. Kage and Yume's mother emerged from the wood and noticed the baby fox. Yume giggled at the baby fox and held him tightly. "Mommy! Daddy! Look at what Hikari found in the tree."
Yume's mother came up and looked at the small fox. "Awwwrf. He's a cutey..."
"Yuki I think he's the child of those two yellow foxes." Yume looked up at her father.
"What will we do with him?" Hikari asked. "Don't get rid of him Daddy!"
Kage looked at Yume. Her eyes were big and glittery. Kage looked at Yuki and nodded. "Very well. We will keep him and raise him to be one of us."
Yume was so happy. She gave Matthias to Hikari ad ran to her parents to give them a hug. "So what's his name anyways?" Kage began to think for a while. "Look where you found him. There might be a clue."
Hikari looked in the hole and found a blanket. She saw the name "MATTHIAS" swen into the blanket in elegant hand writing. Hikari gave the blanket to Yuki. "His name is Matthias, Mrs Yuki." Kage took Matthias and raised him above his head. "Pack! We have a new addition to our family. I now say family, because when we move, we move like a family; when we fight, we fight as a family. Packs won't work out struggles. Families do. Packs will kick out members if they're too much. A family never abandons they're loved ones. So let me rephrase myself. We have a new addition to our family. I give you, Matthias Pawpad!" The pack applauded and cheered for their new member. Yuki gently took Matthias from Kage and noticed something around his neck. It was a necklace. On it was a metal that resembled a treble clef. Her thought was interupted by a growl. She looked around alert. She heard it again. It was under her nose. She looked at Matthias and realized it was his stomach. She laughed, then said "Are you THAT hungry? Ok let's go home."
