She was standing there. People all around were screaming, while she stood in absolute silence. Someone was pulling on her arm, and she glanced around to find that more were in the panic-stricken state she had just passed through.
"Captain! The ship - it's - sinking!" The man who had grabbed her arm spoke in a heavy Scottish accent, making him hard to understand.
She shrugged off his arm, "I know, mon ami, I shall fall with her." Her accent was heavy Russian, and she began to glance around the ship again. "Make sure our youngest boarders know how to swim; if not then teach them."
"Oui, madame." He nodded and trotted off.
She then began to wander through the ship, asking people whether or not they could swim. Most said "No", but to the few that did, she told them to teach the others.
"Captain! There is no time!" A young Frenchman trotted over to her. "The lower decks are already submerged. Do most of the passengers know how to swim?"
"Oui, monsieur, but I do not. I shall sink with the ship."
He seemed surprised, "Non, madame, you cannot."
She nodded sadly, "Oh, but I will. I helped build her, and with her I shall go."
He grabbed her hand and kissed it in a respectable manner. "I have enjoyed out time together, mon ami, and I do not wish for it to end. So I shall stay with you and face what you face." Her only reply was another sad nod.
Two hours later, the ship sunk. Of the five hundred people on board, the stats of living and dead were these: 396 made it to shore alive, 102 died, and 2 of the bodies were never found. These were the bodies of the captain and the Frenchman.
- Title: Story of The Chapone
- Artist: Pianette
- Description: I had to write this thing for English class about why knowing how to swim is an important skill and this was it. Nothing too fancy. Also please note that I usually don't write in third person. Thank you for reading.
