Our story begins, not at Anny's Diner or even the great road but in the midst of an ocean several dimensions away. Amid the puckering salty air, on the cresting waves, a small makeshift raft, quickly constructed from the wreckage of a galley, bobbed and tilted. Its only passenger, half lifeless lay folded over a central support beam. The traumatic wreck at sea had not shaken his resolve to survive. He remembered how the ship had broken into pieces before capsizing, listing and finally sinking beneath the waves. He had found a trunk of personals left behind by a fellow crewman, floating and salvaged it. The trunk, had little within, that could help a floating castaway. Mar had smeared his eyes and lips with shoe polish to prevent them from cracking due to dehydration. This had given him the distinct look of a mischievous raccoon or it would had anyone been around to see him.
It had been two days since the wreck and Mar knew he would not survive much longer without fresh water. He knew better than to drink the seawater and he had not been fortunate enough to find a floating barrel of the ship's stored water. The two days adrift had been warm yet overcast. The clouds had formations the likes of which Mar had never seen or perhaps he had just never been so interested in the sky before.
The last three months had flown by for Mar. It had all begun while he was a general of the nobles. He had fulfilled a charter of war for the Baroness Von Geir in the Two Kings War on the mainland. The war had gone in favor of Maltinavica and he had been awarded the highest medals of honor and duty. The baroness had then given him his own heraldry and charter to join the conquest of the new world. This new land, rich in resources had been discovered only fifty years before and was ripe for imperialist pickings.
One month by air and sea had landed Sir Mar Anons heraldry in five established colonial settlements and yielded the discovery of a new and powerful tribe of natives with which he had established trade relations. Shortly after granting another charter to one of his more ambitious comrades Mar had been inadvertently kidnapped by the right hand of Dr. Cargrove. The incident had led Mar to the good doctors hidden, underwater workshop where Mar beheld inventions that surpassed the level of technology of any industrialized mainland city. He found the doctor to be a good man and in good faith had set out to rescue one of the doctors close friends. Though the rescue was a success, Mar had to disguise himself as a sailor to evade capture by the same pirates that had captured Robin, the doctors close friend. To maintain his disguise he had been hired as a deckhand on board the Blue Seagull, a galley headed back to the mainland. After the galley had ran afoul of storms and sank, Mar found himself in his current predicament.
