• The sudden shock of a weight on my shoulder jolted me awake. I instantly sat up in my bead almost head-butting my older brother in the face as I did.

"What is it!?" I whispered angrily while I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. When I looked up I saw the fear plastered over his face.

"Come on we need to get out of here… I packed you some things to take" He motioned to the door and held up a large bag. Even though I didn’t understand what he was talking about, but i got up and did as he said anyway. It was the middle of winter so I dressed in warm clothes and got my shoes on.

"Hurry up!" He said agitatedly looking around.

"Sorry" I replied tying my laces. When I stood up, I noticed what he had in his hand. It was our father’s gun. He told us that if there was an emergency we should use it, he even taught us how to shoot. Once I saw the gun I realized how serious the situation must be and instantly remembered what I'd heard on the news only hours before.

"Did ‘IT’ become airborne?" I asked trying to hide all of my fear in my voice but clearly failing.
"Yes." He replied looking emotionless at the photos on my shelf. "And ‘IT’ got them..." He looked to the ground his eyes getting slightly glossier than normal. Instantly I had an urge to hug him.

"Its ok twin.... We'll get revenge on those filthy un-dead ‘THINGS’" I said patting him on the shoulder the anger for those THINGS building up inside me. When I’m upset i don't get sad, I don't cry either, I just get really mad. Sometimes I wished that I could cry though, just to get rid of the pain I kept inside so I wouldn't hurt, or try to hurt, anyone.

“your right...twin" He said sniffing a little and holding back his tears in an obvious effort. We turned off all the lights on our way to the door and made sure we had enough bullets to survive, at least until the end of the street. I know we are only 14 but our dad taught us to take care of our selves so we never had trouble in dangerous situations.

My brother and I are really close. We have been since we were little. There is no sibling rivalry with us, we are best friends and always will be. My brother was older than me but only by two minutes, that’s why we call each other twin The only thing we have that’s not in common is that I’m a girl and he is a boy. But we don't care about that because nothing can get in the way of our friendship.

We left the house keeping the key in case we had to return before we left the city completely. The sky was pitch black except for the full moon shining brightly like a flashlight that God was holding up for us to guide our way. The streets were practically deserted apart form a few cars and all around there were knocked over trash cans, broken mailboxes, small fires and some dead people.

Suddenly I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. It was a person. They were limping closer. Fear told me to move but my feet were like blocks of cement melded into the ground. Then I saw what was behind the limping person and took the gun from my brother. BAM, BAM, BAM! I shot the gun killing off three of the 'THINGS' including the limping person.

"What are you doing!" my brother shouted grabbing the gun from me. “Those people could be human!" he looked at the other people walking closer.

"No!" I said “look! They’re not you can see even from here that their expressions are blank, their legs and arms are covered in blood and they are not making any attemp to stop me from killing them!" I said putting together what had been said about the symptoms of the 'THINGS' on the news. According to the press they do not talk, they have blank faces and they do not protect themselves.

He looked back at the THINGS walking towards us and gasped, paralyzed in fear. I grabbed the gun again and shot off as many as I could. Then i pulled my brother into the shadows hoping that they were not smart enough to know where we were and we could be safe until I could reload the gun. But as i was trying to load the bullets one got stuck.

"Come on their getting closer!" my brother looked to the people coming and then back at me trying to get the bullet out of the gun.

The distance between us and the THINGS was getting smaller and smaller, So much for surviving....
