Faintly, I recall--
a time when we were happy,
when the going was smooth,
when no knots tangled
the entwined threads that represented us.
That time long since ended.
Whatever we had, was stolen
given to another couple to make their start.
Whatever God we believed in,
that blessed us with his fond gaze
abandoned us,
dropped us as the wind drops beneath a kite.
For the future,
I wonder if the breeze will ever pick up,
if we will dare to trust ourselves to the winds
of chance.
But mostly, I believe,
it would be better to cut off our strings,
perhaps to fly apart,
perhaps to fall alone.
If I am lucky, maybe
I will see you on the other side.
Maybe in the next breath,
you will return,
or we will find each other.
But, I don't intend to wait around,
for something that I don't think will happen.
If fortune is with me,
I will never hear your name again.
