The wave comes rolling up—
proud, fierce—
convinced it would conquer the land.
“Though all the others may have failed,”
it shouts, “I shall triumph, and my name
will be known across the land.”
The land only smiles knowingly,
and says quietly—
“And what name would that be?”
The ocean wave, caught off guard,
is startled—distracted—preoccupied
in finding a name for itself.
And, absent-minded, still rolling,
it broke—shattered on the rocks,
sweeping away harmlessly a few grains of sand.
The remnants wept at having been fooled so.
The land grins,
as another wave traipses up,
declaring the same battle cries as
its defeated predecessor.
The land only sighs—
“How long will this meaningless battle go on?”
Far above, the indifferent sky
watches apathetically,
as the clouds drift about and
laugh playfully.
“Forever, forever,” they whisper,
unaware of the useless war
being waged, far below...
