As the jay sat upon his lonely birch
looking down at the bark from his grand, old perch,
he saw a small mite crawl out of a hole
that buried deep within the tree’s soul.
The bug scuttled out to the light of day
where his hope of survival was taken away.
The bird crept towards the pest, making trying hard not to startle.
Going fast as can be try as hard as he might,
the gleam of his feathers was caught in the light.
The mite saw the flash, crawled into a crevice
to ward away any possible menace.
But the bird, acting fast took off with a lurch,
and quickly left his grand, old perch.
He caught the mite, brought it back to his tree
where therein waited his family.
As he arrived in the nook he called home,
he worried his family had set out to roam.
For he waited and waited, till the bug was long dead,
but alas, he did not see a trace of his children’s heads.
At last, with resign, the bird gave up his quest
and slowly flew off, forgetting his nest.
He settled down on his favorite birch,
and with one last glance in his futile search
the bird died on his lonely, old perch.
