Tsujigiri-san Sanzoskitsune Jimmy! *suddenly has flashbacks of herself shouting Jimmy across the cafeteria* it's weird knowing two Jimmy's.... Only two Jimmys? I know four Jeremys... Ever since you guys were talking about that movie I've been wondering about it... My brother tells me that he doesn't remember it as being particularly racist, either. It definitely has some messages that could be bad in the past - especially during the 1950's onward, but one would assume that in today's society people would be able to talk about the movie and discuss what it's saying, what it's not, and what it is saying unintended. *hopes that made sense*

Sentama Lin Hey Jimbo. Nothing much. Heard you say you got the DVD of a VHS of Song of the South. Have you watched it yet? Aside from the "Happy Slave in the Plantation" stereotype/message it really wasn't that bad... I did watch it! 3nodding And I loved it! razz I shed a tear at the end, and most of the songs nearly made me cry for want of just one more ride down Splash Mountain. I especially liked the main theme, the spiritual that the workers sing as they walk back to or away from their houses. That's the theme that you hear when you're waiting in line for your log. Love it! And I finally figured out why Br'er Bear is hanging up like that at the begining of the ride... thought that was kind of weird... But anyway, I think this has to be my favorite Disney movie ever now. No question.

@Sanzo - I still fail to see why it would be weird... Now if they both looked and acted like each other, then it would be weird...
@Lin - That makes sense, but setting takes some precedence over propriety. After all, why paint the past?
I don't know that I've ever seen that picture...
[EDIT]@Jimmy - Now I want to see it all the more...

But anyway, I think this has to be my favorite Disney movie ever now. No question. The songs were absolutely ADORABLE! I'd keep it around just for the tunes. I wasn't fond of the movie though. Not because of it's racist material (which we did discuss to no end afterward with my friends because we're weird like that) but the story didn't interest me at all. @Tsuj: Yeah. I agree. Considering that it was made during a time when... well... people still had conceived notions of black americans it's not surprising that something like this was made. I still think it rubbish to be "banned" though. It has false racial stereotypes, yes, but not any that can't be discussed intelligently and none that really apply to the current american culture of today. At least that's what I think. @Sanz: Yea... perhaps I give people too much credit. X3

as Agent K in MIB said "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." Though he was talking about aliens....

Seriously? It didn't interest you? I thought it was a great transition. Stand alone it would have been horrible, but mixed in with the stories of Br'er Rabbit's capers it sort of stacked up into something that was definitely watchable. I always like to see people learning from those fables, especially since on the whole, those stories don't really mean anything... In case any of you are wondering what I meant by the Br'er Bear thing, you can take a look at this video I shot of the first part of Splash Mountain. I'm proud of it! mrgreen http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v281/WiskersThCatfish/?action=view¤t=100_0183.flv

But the rest of it really didn't interest me much. As you said, they were great transitions and it worked with the movie. I just didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Not saying it was bad; I just probably wouldn't watch it again unless I had an occasion to.
