As for the whole being noticed thing, I say just get lucky with the gigs you do play. I mean, that and hope your sound is something they want, otherwise, well, then you'd be going no where fast.
And what's wrong with solo acts? Serj is doing fine, and Tom Morello is flipping awesome. But then again, if you're a bassist, well...there's your first problem.
