Well, it's a traditional song, Devil's Dream, as well as Mason's Apron, it's not usually done *quite* so fast. It is great to dance to!

I'll keep that link you gave somewhere in my notes; I generally like having a folk-dance repertoire list, if only because it's something to add to lesson plans. Plus it helps to have a lot of song material for teaching, and just general having-fun-ness.

whee Yay. It is a fun song. Now I'm kind of homesick for Nova Scotia. sweatdrop New Brunswick (near Maine) is great, but I don't find that there's nearly as much music here.

Sentama Lin I hadn't realized that fiddlers bow with their left hand and finger with their right hand. *goes and looks up* I never did, quite honestly. And I played classic violin and at the same time had my father pestering me fiddling.

Homesick... I suppose it's sort of how I feel about not being in the city. Art/Culture/Music here in the boonies just... sort of... halts in place and nothing ever goes on.
Do you get to visit Nova Scotia regularly?

Well, sort of. I was living in Halifax until...May. Before that I lived in this province for a year. So only a few months reprieve. In the French areas, there's great music, but I live in "the" loyalist city. =s
It's the opposite here, Lin. The real music is in the country.

I see. There probably would be a lot of cultural musical things here in this area, if the people here actually cared about the musical works of their heritage.
*opens mouth, then closes it again* Heh... I'm not going to rant about arts education in the United States right now. X3

If heritage is strong in rural Nova Scotia, that's partly because it's ethnically homogeneous. sweatdrop Not a lot of diversity. So there're pros and cons. At least we get lovely music out of it. x3
Arts education sucked where I grew up. Our school band fell apart when I was in grade 8, and the only "arts" course was Drama, until I was in grade 12. I took an online art course that year. =/

I don't remember much of what happened during my arts education in any level of the public education system. It just wasn't interesting. I remember loving to sing, hence why I was in choir, but I can't tell you anything I really learned in choir or other musical things. In retrospect, there could've been so many teachable moments about theory and, IMO more importantly, world culture... but it never happened.

I learned to read music in elementary school. =D But yeah, overall it was pretty boring and useless.
As a side note, where the heck is the domo icon??

I learned to read during that time as well, but I just felt that I was learning how to be a music machine in school. I never actually learned what it was to be a real musician in a sense until I started college.

None of my music teachers seemed particularly interested in what they were teaching. That may have had something to do with it.

That's a shame... The only good thing that came from some legislation here in the US is to require teachers to be licensed (which, I hope, implies interest) before teaching so at least our teachers have a desire to teach things.
But still... Arts education is still very... meh.

I'm not sure what's required here. I know I had French teachers who didn't speak French, so obviously they don't need to have knowledge of the subject they're teaching. rolleyes
