Celestial Burden No, i have this AMAZING idea and I love it. I just lack a plot.. Aaa, that's always the way, ain't it?
Have you tried talking it all out to someone or yourself? Sometimes I find that if I try explaining an idea out loud I start adding to it as I'm saying it and those addition are then quite helpful. Maybe you can develop a plot in such a way.

Well, would you mind sharing it? I'd love to hear it, and perhaps we can steer our discussion in such a way that it would inspire a plot within that burning skull of yours.

I find that it can be rather counterproductive to do that if you aren't the 'group worker' type. : It's possible to expend all of yourself while talking to that person, and all of a sudden, you find yourself unmotivated to share the story again because the world already knows. o3o Ideas are like fickle mistresses--you can make them grow quickly when you pamper them behind closed doors...
Or maybe that was for visual arts. |D;;

THe original idea was that I would keep journals for my characters. Sounds fun.
And then the other night, that idea expanded, and I got this idea that everyone is required to keep a digital journal as soon as they are old enough to write and speak, all that good stuff. Contents of that journal, with every entry, are sent to a database. This database is never looked at. Or rarely, rather. It's kept for when people need to find specific information. Statistics, examples for papers, things of that nature. Names are left out when one looks at entries for these things. You also need a permit to look at the files.
In fact, the main reason they are kept is for when some major event happens. Be it a catastrophe, threats, or something of the sort. Entries are then sorted for things that seem related, and only a small group of people are allowed to look at the complete files.
And then people start having dreams about familiar faces. By that, I mean perhaps people they've seen on the street once or twice, people they don't associate with, etc. Normally, this can be ignored, right? Just a dream./ But repeatedly? Night after night? And then people start talking about it? Not easy to ignore anymore.
So, I have the one hacker character. I think you can guess from there.
But that's all I have. The general idea. That's it.

I had this idea of a story one time.. It was like this girl who discovers she has the power to influence the minds and decisions of others. And supposedly, in my head, she learned to hone her ability and began using it to her advantage. And of course there's some sort of corruption of value in there or something... I don't know. My biggest fear is that I'll write a really good story and then find out that someone already had that exact idea.

Is the hacker more like a good guy or bad guy?
Maybe there's a group of people planning an attack somewhere or something to that extent and other people start having dreams about them, but they don't really know these people enough to give information on them, and they feel guilty for being in on something bad that they can't do anything about. And then there's a hacker or something who tries to get to the bottom of it all...? Maybe. Somethin'.

That's the thing. It's not a 'good guy' or 'bad guy' thing going on, I don't think. It's just.. people. Dreaming about other people. And wondering why. Connections between them that they don't know about. And they don't know the names of these people, can recall their faces only when alone, things of that nature. Sometimes the dreams are elating. Sometimes terrifying, depending on the person. But it's assumed that others would mention these things in their journals, so....

And I guess another matter to look at would be the nature of the society in your story-novel-thing. :] Just because people are required to keep journals doesn't mean that they will be truthful. And even if they were truthful, to what degree? Is it known by public that everything they write is sent to a database? Cause like hell I'd put something personal or important in a public log, even if people do need permits to access them.

Well this hacker.... Maybe they set up shop hacking into all these journals. Various people come to the hacker (maybe the hacker sets themselves up with an alter ego so they can remain anonymous) asking to find certain people they're having dreams about. They're seeing someone they instantly are connected to and want to meet, want to know more about them. Some see people that are plotting against them and they want them stopped. The hacker doesn't care what anyone's after, they're just there to sell the info they can get for a nice paycheck. But then maybe hacker starts connecting the dots between people and these connections start forming something bigger. Something either leading up to an event of some kind. Or maybe the hacker finds they're playing out fate. Or killing the idea of fate. Maybe hacker gets themselves a god complex. Or goes up against another hacker with one.

Yeah I know, that's the thing. Clearly, some people won't be truthful. But I mean, I don't think I would mind putting something personal in it that had no relevance to anything into a database, since I know that when people look at them names and information of the sort are taken out. And that's known by the public.
It's also not that they know -everything- is sent, either. More like... one random entry a week or something. That's what they're told, at least.
EDIT: Holy hell, Waku. I love you. That's totally something she would do, sell the information. I never thought of it.... I always did like the idea of her having to go up against someone else, though....

I'm picturing a futuristic-like environment. Where this journal-keeping thing has just gone on for so long, no one really thinks about it anymore. No one's privacy has been invaded so far, so maybe no one worries. How are the journals kept? Maybe the person has to hook up to a sensor or something that acts like a lie-detector test and monitors the person so every journal entry kept also has this log so one could also possibly tell if they were lying.
