WiskersThCatfish aretoo ...I'm always a bit amused by those who say, "I hate DC. But Vertigo's fantastic.". Why? Well... they're essentially the same company, y'see... mrgreen Now now, I never EVER said "I hate DC." And also, let's look at the phrasing there. Anyone who might say "I hate DC, but Vertigo's Fantastic." more then likely knows that they are owned by the same parent company, or else they wouldn't make the distinction at all. Also, you can't argue with me that Vertigo and DC write the same types of comics, because if they did they wouldn't have to have created the subsidiary label of Vertigo in the first place. So don't get all up against me because I don't read Batman. I've never read Batman, and I never will, but it's not because I think people who read Batman should die, it's just because I'd rather read something else. You won't ever see me insulting Batman fans when they walk up to me, and try to tell me awesome things about Batman though, and I expect Batman fans would show me the same courtesy when I try to tell them awesome things about Deadpool. Nonononono, I was extrapolating, not saying YOU said that you hated them. Or anything remotely similar, actually. And a few of those I've heard say that have NO idea they're the same company. (Besides being part of Time Warner, they share a lot of the same editorial staff, writers, and artists.) I'm not up against you at all. As a matter of fact, since the Vertigo writers have a bit more freedom in their "universe", they tend to have better written and constructed stories, and more control over where the characters go (to an extent). And I wouldn't tell ANYONE that what they read sucks, even if I don't like it, 'cause I read so many varied things myself. smile (And if I weren't so backlogged with comics right now, I might actually pick up the Deadpool myself; you intrigued me with it.) mrgreen For the record: some of DC's sister companies include the Cartoon Network comics, the Wildstorm comics, the Milestone comics, and Mad Magazine. mrgreen

More comic book geekery: DC Comics actually started out as 2 separate companies, National Periodicals and (damn, can't remember the other one). (Marvel started out as Timely.) The two companies had their own books, and cross-overs in All-Star Comics, which led to the birth of the Justice Society of America. One of the editorial rules of the JSA was that if the characters had their own comics, they weren't in the JSA anymore (with the exception of Wonder Woman, who had Sensation Comics, and later her own title, 'cause she was "just a girl" and acted only as their secretary. xp ) Superman and Batman were "honorary members" and never really appeared with them. Flash eventually got his own comic, too (this was the Jay Garrick flash, not Barry Allen or Wally West), and had to bow out.
Fast forward a few years, and Fawcett Comics put out a red-suited superhero named Captain Marvel, and National Periodicals (now known as DC comics after their most popular title, Detective Comics) sued Fawcett for copyright infringement, saying that the character was too close to Superman. The courts agreed, but rather than appeal, Fawcett saw the writing on the wall, with super-hero comics on the wane, ceased publication of Captain Marvel, and indeed, all their super-hero comics.
A few years after that, DC Comics, in a nice stroke of irony, actually bought the characters outright from Fawcett. Marvel Comics, seeing a chance to one-up DC, put out a Captain Marvel character, effectively blocking DC from having their character's name on the title (the copyright had lapsed in Fawcett's hands), and to this day, Marvel occasionally publishes their Captain Marvel to keep DC from re-gaining rights to the name, and DC must publicize Captain Marvel by the name he is perhaps better know by now, Shazam.
DC also picked up the rights to the Charleston comics characters, and soon will be publishing the Archie Comics Groups super-hero characters.
Mad Magazine was always independent until the publisher, William Gaines (who was better known for horror magazines in the 50s, until the Comics Code and the HUAC activities shut those comics in EC comics line down) passed away, at which time it was bought by Time-Warner, and lumped in with the comics publishing wing, becoming DC Comics sister company, and shortly thereafter having ads suddenly appear in its pages.
*ahem*. Enough from me for tonight, eh? wink
