I've seen those ads for that 'AWOL Now' thing on the main page, so I decided to give it a try. It hasn't impressed me yet. It reminds me alot of Gaia Towns, except fancier, but not quite as good. After registering for a 45 day free trial, you get all these 'newbie tasks' you have to do. They are kinda like a tutorial, except you can't skip them. The site seems dummied down until you can complete them. stare It would be like if when you signed up for Gaia, they made you go fishing, post in the chatterbox, get a house, get 10 bugs and 10 trash from towns, win 10 tickets at the casino, and PM a random member, before you could make you avatar or even LOOK at the shops. gonk And to top it all off, after the 45 day trial, it looks like you have to pay to stay on. AND it only works on IE. It make Firefox cry. The entire thing runs on Flash, so my sucktastic dialup makes the experience even more enjoyable. I want to give it a fair chance, so I'm slogging through these stupid tasks, seeing if it will prove itself when it lets me do everything. My patience is quickly running out with it though. A bad site like this really makes you appreciate how good we have it here on Gaia.

Ah, good old Gaia. heart I finally made it through the Newbie Tasks on AWOL. I was dissapointed. All of their clothing would fill up ONE of our stores. The forums suck, and it seems to be populated by n00bs. In one scene, there was this one guy who kept repeating 'school XD'. rolleyes It was the only conversation going on. To top that off, you have to 'buy' your money. There is no way I saw to earn it on the site! If Gaia ever went that way, I would leave. crying

Of course, I think we all woud. 3nodding But I suppose having only a few good forums like this sone mean we don't have to spend a lot of time on other forums, or on deciding what to join.

It was a learning experience. It's hard to realize how good Gaia is if you never check out other sites. I would hear people here complain about glitches, n00bs, and that their dream item isn't in stores, and worry that Gaia is going to Hell. But, after slogging around AWOL, I'm not worried about Gaia anymore, at least not in the near future.

Hmmm...I haven't heard much about other sites. I know there was a Korean one that was battle-oriented, but I don't know where and you earned gold like on Gaia, sort of. Are there any other fun sites out there better than this AWOL?
PostPosted: Sat Jan 14, 2006 7:12 pm
I found AWOL now when it was linked on Gaia's frontpage. I've never really went looking for other sites like Gaia. Heck, I never went looking for Gaia, I found it went it got linked on a webcomic I was reading. I like the Avies and stuck around. That was back in July 2003. Now, I'm still on Gaia, and that webcomic looks like it's dead. sad

I like the 'how I found Gaia' stories. They're intersting. Old as me huh? I bet you wish you donated alot back then, I know I do. I didn't start getting donation letters until Jan. 04. I bought them in the exchange back then. It wasn't until Jan.05 that I actually started donating to Gaia.

Well, I think I'll skip the excuses sweatdrop and start on my Gaia story.

A friend of mine gave me the link ages ago, when the URL for the site was actually something different... I didn't have time to sign on then, and after that day, I kinda forgot about it more and more sweatdrop

Then last year, when I switched browsers, I decided to reorganize my Favorites list... and noticed the link for Gaia wasn't working anymore crying I almost considered joining a lost cause, until another friend of mine happened onto the site from one of her friends, and gave me the URL.

I joined around the end of May/beginning of June last year, and felt kinda upset I was a few a days after the rollback xd

Yeah, I've lost stuff in a rollback before. A few months after I joined, I got an ET, which had a face veil, which I didn't like and sold. About two weeks later, I got another ET that had a flower crown in it. I liked it and equipped it. THe next day they had a rollback. Bye-bye flower crown. I would have been upset, except for that they added 1000 gold to everyone's accounts to make up for what was lost. eek
