As with everything, there are rules. This section will (hopefully) be a breakdown of all the basic rules... sweatdrop

Cups
There are four levels of Pokémon battle you can enter. They are (in order of difficulty): The Poké Cup, The Standard League, The Master Cup, and The Pokémon League. Each tournament has different rules and requirements as well as level and/or badge restrictions.

Everything else, including Sand Attack, the item Bright Powder and the Sand Veil ability, are legal.

Self-KO Clause
If both players are down to their last Pokémon and one uses a move that kills itself, such as Explosion, Self-Destruct, Destiny Bond, or Memento, the pokemon who used that move is considered the loser in the match.

Species Clause-
Each Pokémon must be of a different species. Different Pokédex number means it's a different species.

Item Clause-
By far the most common non-standard rule, item clause states that each Pokémon on the team must be holding a different item from one another. So no double leftovers or focus sash. Items that do the same thing but aren't the same, such as leftovers and black sludge, are allowed.

Self-KO Clause
If both players are down to their last Pokémon and one uses a move that kills itself, such as Explosion, Self-Destruct, Destiny Bond, or Memento, the Pokémon who used that move is considered the loser in the match.
----
The Master Cup
Limited to Pokémon who are level 55-70
