Face cards (King, Queen, and Jack) are worth 10 each, and the Ace can be worth either 11 or 1. For instance, if you get a Jack and an Ace off the bat, that's a blackjack, or automatic win (10 + 11 = 21). However, if you have 3 and a Jack, then you get an Ace, then that Ace reverts to 1, so that you don't go over (3+10+1 = 14). You may then choose to take another Hit and hope to get 7 or less, or you can stand at 14. Basic strategy (that used by dealers, who don't follow any instinct, but must stick to set guidelines on when to hit or stand) is to stand once you get 17 or higher.
