People say hello on the phone because they were taught that it is polite. These days, we do it without thinking. Sometimes, we use hello to start a conversation.

It's a politeness thing and I think it has definately evolved into a habit for people now.

Is hello really that polite cause we say hello all the time, it's just like hi only longer.. I mean, why don't we say stuff like "Good day sir or madam, how may I be of service to you?" now that would be polite, like if someone called you at your house. I dont know, im just being pretty stupid, sorry.....

I have caller ID so if its a friend I'll say yello or yola (a mix between "yo" and "hola") But when It's someone I don't know I say hello (last name) residence.

People say hello because they'd get called crazy if they answered with something like 'Good morning! I can assure you I'm not a zombie!' (though I really want to do that...) More seriously though, its just because its the generally accepted greeting, and is an easy intro into conversation.

to tell the truth, I find your question silly mrgreen . thats like asking "why do you say goodbye when someone leaves?" when you meet a person you greet them, and you greet them by saying hello cuz its the most normal/casual/nuetral thing to say. its how to begina a conversation. cimple as that. you don't greet someone by saying My ears are bleeding. Johnson residence. if you didn't day hello what else r u gonna say? hi? hey? thats about it. you wouldn't even say good morning or good anything because then your implying something -bringing up real subject matter- before the conversation is even getting started. when you write an essay, which comes first, the introduction or the body paragraphs? the intro of course. "hello" is the intro of a conversation (not literally an intro).
I hope I didn't seem aggressive, and sorry if I did. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Notice I was being gentle. I said "silly" mrgreen .

I have caller ID too. But I still say hello when it's my friends as well as someone else I don't know. Sometimes I say hi. But I use different tones. If it's someone I know or a friend, I say hello in like a friendly tone. But if it's a number I don't know I say hello like a question, as if I'm saying "hello? who's this?".
