.HACK//Sandbox
I want to try something -- an experiment of sorts. The world will be in the real life world and "The World" MMORPG world prevalent in the .HACK manga and anime series. Yes, there can be characters with hacked abilities. Yes, there can be people who get Data Drained and fall comatose in the real world. Yes, if you so choose, you can opt to only play in the real world. Yet, the events that will happen will be determined by DMs, and everyone (that wants to) will get a chance.
When the RP is not currently DM-Managed, it will run as a sandbox. Feel free to explore around at-will, fighting normal enemies, exploring dungeons, and trading for items (do this reasonably). However, DMs, during their time to shine, have power to introduce hacked monsters, grant specific abilities, or make special events. If you want to know more read on.

Character Creation
You play as a regular human being, with regular mundane occupations, and regular schedules, in the real world. However, there are certain rules one must follow when making your character in "The World" MMORPG world.
Character Class
There are six character classes in "The World" :
Blademaster: Fights with one-handed swords and shields. A good mix of offense and defense. Sword skills specialise in single-enemy hits.
Heavy Blade: Fights with large two-handed swords. Very offensive character with good accuracy. Greatsword skills specialise in multiple enemy hits.
Heavy Axeman: Fights with large greataxes. Another offensive class that specialises in heavy damage to one or many targets. Highest overall defense of all the classes, but slow in speed.
Long Arm: Fights with polearms. Not as offensive as the Heavy Blade or the Heavy Axeman but more offensive than the Blademaster. Has a higher accuracy compared to other classes, and polearms add distance for evasion.
Twin Blade: Fights with twin daggers. The most accurate and evasive of the offensive melee classes, but the lowest damage per hit. Attacks and dagger skills are fast and attack multiple times, which compensates for low damage. A versatile jack of all trades.
Wavemaster: A class devoted entirely to magic. Low defense and physical offense but a wealth of magical defense and magical power. The only class capable of using staves with the most powerful of summon spells.
Each character must choose one class. One cannot change class once it is chosen through normal means, one cannot be more than one class through normal means, and one cannot have more than one character. Other classes have been seen by players of "The World" but they are not offered by default. They may be hacked classes or, perhaps, event-rewarded class changes. Some people even make their own classes more specific for role-play situations, like a treasure hunter or informant or bard or trader.
Abilities
One's special skills (like sword skills or magic skills) are gained through items. All characters can use magic spells, but the strongest of magic spells are usually only found on staves or hacked items. Classes cannot use items designed for other classes (i.e. Wavemasters cannot use a Heavy Blade's greatsword). In general, offensive spells and abilities are gained from weapons while defensive spells and abilities are gained from armor and accessories. If the item is unequipped, one loses the item's granted abilities.
Appearances
The general feel of the world is medieval-fantasy. Try to go for attire of that sort. Of course, character appearances can be hacked into whatever one wants (hacking can even span over to abilities and items). However, it makes it easier for MMORPG admins to track and delete illegal characters.

The World
Real World
The real world is self-explanatory: it's the real world. Think of today's real world, but the Internet rules. Almost everything is dependent on it now. Real-time information is available at the touch of a mobile phone button. Even movies are streamed from the Internet rather than from DVDs or other media.
ALTIMIT OS, by the ALTIMIT Group, is the predominant operating system in the world. The system, which comes in various versions, run everything that utilises the Internet: cell phones. laptops, computers, game consoles, and many more things. Even after Pluto's Kiss (a rampant ALTIMIT virus that destroyed many things on the Internet and physically in the real world) it still controls the majority of the market, especially after the MMORPG, "The World", was released for laptops, desktops, and even mobile phones. PineApple systems have released a contender to ALTIMIT, StarChild, but has a significantly smaller market share than ALTIMIT.
"The World" MMORPG World
The MMORPG world consists of various root towns -- essentially virtual lobbies that resemble towns. Various towns exist, each town having their own physical computer server in CC Corporation's (the company who made "The World") headquarters, and are linked together through Chaos Gates. These gates, while they allow travel to and from various towns (and, thus, servers), also allow travel to dungeons and forests and fields. The towns also include guild buildings (guilds explained below), shops, marketplaces, and houses people may buy.
The non-root-town areas (dungeons, forests, fields, etc.) are all generated by a three-phrase destination. Merely saying the name of a place (for example: "Vile" "Harmonious" "Feymarsh" or "Exalted" "Legendary" "Holy Place") in front of a Chaos Gate will transport one's entire party to the place. Because of the large number of words in "The World"'s dungeon database, and because the same keywords used in one server will take one to a different place if used in another server, a seemingly infinite number of places can be visited.
Some servers and non-root-town areas are restricted to privileged users like administrators of "The World." However, it has been rumored that certain hackers have modified their characters to allow access to these (often broken, or still being tested) areas.
Many guilds for many purposes (mercantile, courier, healing, mercenaries, treasure hunters, thieves, chefs, farmers, etc.) exist in the MMORPG -- and some members of very special guilds gain abilities similar to administrator powers (character deletion, experience drain, instant transmission, etc.) in order to assist administrator in game management tasks. The Crimson Knights, a volunteer guild designed to assist administrators in stopping rule breakers and illegal characters and confiscating hacked items, is one of these guilds.

The DMs
I want to create a way for people to DM when they can and, when there are no DMs to plan things, players can simply explore around with others to their hearts content, making (reasonable) adventures. However, I ask that only DMs can make characters gain abilities outside of the normal rules (for example, using hacked items or hacking other characters) unless someone in their real life character is a hacker (please, please, please, please not everyone be a hacker).
I'd prefer for the people interested in DMing to specify days when they will be interested in DMing. Everyone who plays a character is encouraged to DM -- even if it's only once in a while. However, it is not required.

The Crimson Knights
Hello all players of "The World" . This post is merely a reminder: do not play in "The World" with modified characters or weapons. It ruins the fun for everyone, and brings swift punishment executed by the Crimson Knights, the CC Corporation-sanctioned volunteer guild who helps administrator deal with the rule breakers of this game. Rule breakers caught by us will have their items confiscated, have their levels drained, or, worse, have their characters deleted from "The World" . Please behave, or we will get you.

North American Union's HELIOS High-Speed Transit Line
The North American Union (NAU), a group of North American countries similar to the European Union, was proud to announce the grand opening of the HELIOS High-Speed Transit Line, co-designed by the NAU Transportation Council and Transrapid of Germany. Thanks to a series of magnetic tracks built across NAU member states, travelers can span great distances in a matter of minutes -- as compared to the hours it normally took to drive. High speed Inter-country lines allow airplane-equivalent travel speeds from country to country, while smaller local tracks are available to connect residential, commercial, and industrial zones of busy cities and suburbs. The complex network of tracks is run by a computer, while each train utilises the Internet to run their specified routes. Manual control is available on each train, if necessary, and emergency features are installed on each train for the safety of passengers.
"We hope that this will help create a greener, more-efficient, and more connected North America." said one of the members of the NAU Transportation Council.
HELIOS stands for High-latency Electronic Logistical International Operating System and, more specifically, is the name of the operating system that runs the entire network of tracks across all NAU continents. It currently manages the logistics -- route planning, scheduled maintenance, emergency signals, etc. -- of the entire state of maglev train transporation in the NAU. The NAU Transportation Group eventually expects HELIOS to control wheeled transport in the future.
Gamer Falls Comatose While Playing "The World"
A few hours ago, Kenneth O'Donnell, United States, was found in a local cyber cafe passed out while playing "The World" . Cyber cafe employees thought that he was sleeping (something that happens on occasion) and tried to wake him up. When attempts at waking O'Donnell failed, an emergency medical team was summoned to take care of the patient.
Employees mentioned that all that showed up on O'Donnell's screen were "System Error" flashing in red and a blank dialog box with nothing but an OK button. Currently, O'Donnell's current status is unknown, though he is not dead.
CC Corp Announces New VR Visors and Game Controllers
CC Corp, makers of the most popular MMORPG, "The World" , has released a new version of its most popular peripherals for gaming and intuitive computer control. The original visor has been given an overhaul to fix graphical glitches when one moves the camera in an application. CC Corp has also added multiple temperature and vibration spots which provide another level of realism for games and applications wishing to utilise it. The game controller has been made fully analog; all buttons can detect how much pressure is being used to press it. The same temperature and vibration spots found on the new visor is also found in the controller. The current release colours of the visor and game controller are Polar White, Sleek Black, and Lunar Silver, but expect more colors soon. As always, these new devices will work on all ALTIMIT platforms.

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Eric is a hacker, he modifies characters for a fee. He's 19 years old, and is a bit eccentric. He always seems to be in a good mood, probably because his hacking skills are superior to most and he knows it.
He has his holographic eye piece that he uses when playing the game, sort of like an enhancement. The eyepiece can be used as a separate window of sorts, it allows him to have access to certain things faster than most. His gloves have sensors built into them to register finger movements as keystrokes when activated, for other aspects of the internet and computer related things.
In MMORPG, Chaos is well known on the web, known for his gaming skills. He doesn't mod his own character much, the only modification he currently has equipped is a slight inventory expansion. Most everything he has on the game, he received through legal game play. He is fearless in gameplay, doing whatever it takes to win.

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Reiyaku is a fashion designer in real life who tailors to a wide variety of tastes. When he isn't custom-designing an outfit for a client he works at his own little boutique store where he makes clothing that caters to his current whims. He's a bit capricious, spontaneous, and a bit of a flake, but he means well. His current trend of fashion is stylish fighting gear, which he became inspired after starting martial arts training. It's not that he isn't good at martial arts; he does pretty well at anything he wants to do. However, it doesn't take long for the novelty to disappear, and for Reiyaku to move on to another hobby -- and, another slew of fashion designs.
Heilig is a Wavemaster in "The World" , though he isn't known for his skills. More specifically, his magical growth could be better in-game if he didn't focus so much on collecting the coolest looking items (not that his skills suck; he's fully capable of dishing out the damage when needed). But such is the curse of being a rare item hunter. The rare items look cool, and many of them provide interesting magic abilities, but because appearance is his first priority when finding items he tends to ignore ones that are stronger in favour of ones that look better.

At 22 years old, he lives alone in an apartment, just trying to make due with his pathetic paycheck. He's not a very sociable person until he sits down at his computer. Then, all his inhibitions vanish.
In "The World", Blank Luck is known for his bravery and kindness to the other players. He is a very self-sacrificing sort, and gives away extra items and gold like candy. In combat, he is completely focused, allowing no distractions from his target. He is unrivaled in agility, and considers his polearm to be an essential extension of his body.
He knows when to make sacrifices and when to stand his ground. He isn't above running, if it means he'll be able to return at a more advantageous moment.

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Nathan Reynolds comes from a line of men who were referfed to as "Adonis". They were the most handsome, sought after men of their days, and Nathan's father was no different. He was a CEO of some major cooperation that Nathan couldn't be bother to remember. Nathan didn't care much anyway, not so long as his life remained easy, and by this chance he never felt a need to break rules. The things he got made it so he never had to steal, cheat, or lie, and he never understood why people would do such things. He couldn't understand how greed could blind someone to do bad things, after all he never had felt envy of his peers items. Nathan had his values built on his lack of want.
The World gave him his first taste of want, and a want that his father's money couldn't give him. He was used to seeing something and getting it, and this world wasn't like that. Of course if you followed the rules it was like that, but there was ways around that with the right funds. In his attempts to find a willing hacker to boost his character Garland he accidentally report a hacker to the administrators. They, thinking it was someone acting out of the goodness of their hearts, rewarded Garland with a small amount of gold, and a note a note from a Crimson Knight telling him how he was doing The World good. This simple mistake was all it took to change him from someone ready to cheat to a Crimson Knight neophyte. He worked hard to make up for his previous error in judgment and quickly rose in rank to the a mid-level rank with some autonomy.
Garland is one of the few Knights that don't use a sword. He uses a great axe to punish his foes with an unstoppable fury. He follows the rules to the letter now and punishes rule breakers severely. Garland shows mercy in small seemingly inconsistence burst, but a wise man wouldn't bet on it. His current goal is to help with the influx of player killers that is on the rise. Garland has shown no mercy to the player killers who are simply parasites on the server to him. While he hasn't gotten any big name killers, he certainly has gotten their attention with how he goes after them. He parties with normal players who are going into dangerous zone and takes care of any PKers who attack his group.

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Gabrielle is a first year university student, working on a history major. She's part of the local girl's choir, which meets every Tuesday and Friday morning. She loves music and cooking. Her best friend, Tristan, is a hacker and friends or acquaintances with Eric, though she isn't sure which. She's met Eric a few times, through Tristan, but hasn't really noticed him before. She doesn't have many friends, and spends most of her free time on the internet, or reading, or studying. Her parents died a few years ago, from their house being burned down when Gabrielle's pet rat chewed partway through a power cord and it caught the curtains on fire. They were very wealthy, though she hadn't known it when they were alive, they lived so frugally. As a result, she has enough money that she never has to work, but she wants to anyways. She can be rather eccentric at times; she will sometimes go through phases where she dresses up and acts like people from certain historical cultures and periods, if she doesn't understand them, to help herself get a better feel for them. She's gotten Tristan to hack her account a few times, just to help enhance her character, and in exchange for that, she cooks gourmet meals for him. The goggles she wears, when put on, allow her to become immersed in The World. They're a prototype made by Tristan and some of his friends, and use conductors on the sides to follow brain-wave patterns and affect them, so it literally feels as though one is in The World.
Gabrielle's love of music carries over into The World. As Wavemaster Fable Goldentongue, often known as Fay, she specializes in skills in the areas of music and charisma, aiming towards being a bard. (Charisma because brads were traditionally storytellers.) Her stave was "customized" to shrink into a bamboo flute at will, which she can then use for spells. She loves The World, but doesn't quite understand why the rules are so... strict. It's just a game, afterall. Isn't it?
Roc McAlester / Ra

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Rocs story began when he made a deal with his uncle to deliver oil to a foreign country, it was associated with the military and Roc was merely 18 years old and needed money bad. Roc had always lived a middle class life style and desired much more, delivering oil, easy right? Thats how it seemed before he went with his uncle over seas and when things seemed all fair and well they were attacked with gunfire. Roc tried to run away but in his fear and adrenaline he killed a few enemy soldiers with blunt weapons and the other through strangling him to death.
Scarred by what happened he went home and his anger began getting out of hand along with the trauma, It was one day he was driven through so much anger by his mother he beat her to death with a crowbar, soon he was apprehended by the police and sent to an insane asylum where he has spent 3 years as a test subject.
Holistic Acclimation to real-Life Environments, known as "HALE" among the patients, was a test to see if insane or unstable people to reunite with people from the outside and relieve themselves of their anger at the same time. Roc was a part of this test and has been one of few who figured out this test, he didn't like it. The asylum gives the patients an account on "The World" to vent their violence and anger, and also allow them to interact with others. The system is a VR simulator by a large helmet that allows the user to completely control their character with their mind and can double using a motion sensitive system for more active approaches.
Roc seems normal on "The World" but in real life is quite paranoid and his emotions are pretty out loud if provoked. He is often scared about things that most can't identify. Still traumatized by war he has a tendency to rock back and forth.
Alexander Anderson / Lynx

General Character (Real-Life and In-MMORPG) Biography: Alexander is a young man of 22 who has chosen the life of solitude, shutting himself away from the real world and performing all of his vital tasks online or by mail. He received a trial pack of The World in the mail one day, and started an account out of curiosity. Three hours later, he was hooked. Dealing with people online made things much less complicated, and his personality became almost completely opposite while online. Offline, however, he remained barricaded in his small apartment.
Traveling throughout The World with no other goal than exploration, Lynx serves almost as a guide for players unfamiliar with the landscape of wherever they might be, and runs a web page filled with maps of the areas he has visited. Recently, though, some of the areas are getting a bit buggy and creature types not found in some areas are cropping up. Lynx has been reporting anything he comes across, since this is how he can protect his World.
