The GardenA portion of the grounds outside has been set up for couples (and stags) to go out and enjoy the night air away from the ball. So, if you're feeling a bit claustrophobic, step outside!

Anti had to sit down. To be more clear, she had walked into the Great Hall, lingered by the entrance for a few anxiety-ridden moments, looking for anyone she knew, seen nothing but a sea of masks and flurry of colored dresses moving in dance, and then walked out. She was being ridiculous. She had been to fancy parties, if not balls, before. Not many, because Mother and Father believed children ought to be not seen and not heard, but she knew how these things were supposed to go.
As an unattached young lady, she needed to remain at the side of her chaperone; in this case, her older brother. She was to sit quietly, eat nothing, because young ladies did not let on that they actually had to eat to survive in public, and wait for someone to ask her to dance, at which point her brother would inform her whether she could or could not dance with said person. After any dance she was to return to her seat and start the whole process over again, throughout the entire night, and hopefully some pureblood boy would take notice of her delicacy and grace and decide to court her.
Anti was fairly certain she would rather have her fingernails pried off one by one then ever go through anything remotely similar to that. Even if she did stay by Vander's side, he'd likely ditch her in favor of Wendy anyways, not that she'd be sorry to see him go. He and Wendy deserved one another. She couldn't handle both of them at the same time; she could just picture herself trying not to cry. They'd probably laugh.
And she couldn't- she just didn't think she could do it. She couldn't watch all those girls with their boyfriends (or their girlfriends, some of them had girlfriends and she hated them for it with an intensity that frightened her), swaying in the torch light, laughing and talking. All of them in masks. It was like one of her nightmares come to life. She gingerly felt her own mask, and started to undo it, but couldn't. She couldn't. She let her hands fall into her lap, and stared at the folds of her dress. Her makeup was perfect and her hair was tightly braided and clipped back, so tight it almost hurt- and her shoes were barely more than fragile scraps of lace. You couldn't run in shoes like these, even if that was all you wanted to do.
She picked at the skin around her nails until it grew red and irritated and forced herself to stop. Just breathe. Just breathe. Everything will be fine. It's just a silly ball. Anti twisted her necklace back and forth fretfully, and closed her eyes. At the end of the terraced lane a couple was furiously snogging under the fairy lights. She felt like she might vomit. Shadow rises and you are here. And then you cut, you cut it out- And everything goes back to the beginning. Silence seizes a cluttered room... Light is shed not a breath too soon. Darkness rises in all you do; Standing and drawn across the room. Spatial movements and butterflies.

spaceElliott had taken one look at the Great Hall, rolled his eyes, and promptly exited out towards the gardens. He had absolutely no interest in any of the nonsense taking place inside. Not the dancing, not the auction, none of it. If he got hungry, he might just consider popping in for something to eat... If only because the resident House-Elves had obviously worked very hard on the feast, and he'd hate to make them work more by opting to head to the kitchen instead. Even the gardens managed to irk him, though, done up for the holiday as they were. Not as crowded as inside, though, so he supposed it was the lesser of two evils. He groaned quietly, hands shoved down into his pockets, not really sure what he was doing. His fingers brushed the cover of the book he'd shrunk down. He figured he could just... find a place to read. Jesse would find him eventually, he was sure, but he was rather hoping the Slytherin was as annoyed with all this rubbish as he was and wouldn't mind if they just stayed outside all night. He'd probably object to the reading, but they could always just snog. Provided Jojo didn't make a nuisance of herself, but last he'd heard, she hadn't been planning on coming, had made plans with Kenny since it was her birthday (and he almost managed to pity her for having it on such an awful ruddy holiday), though he figured those'd be long since over by now. She probably didn't see the draw of attending the dance without her boyfriend, which he didn't blame her for. He barely saw the draw with his in attendance, after all. Hopefully she kept to that and didn't show, he thought. Though, now he was jealous; she was probably tucked away in her dorm, enjoying blissful silence since most of the school was at the ball. If only, he thought bitterly. He would've loved to make use of the time in the Slytherin dorms without Benji there to get on his last nerve.

The cat goddess mask was unusual, but Anti had shared a dorm room with Selina for the past four years now. She would have recognized her voice anywhere. She glanced up at her housemate, who was wearing a dark slinky dress that made her look older, and her hair was pinned up like a woman's, not a girl's; Anti felt like a petulant child playing dress up in contrast.
Where was Layton, then? Anti knew she would have heard if they were still dating; she heard a lot of what her housemates discussed, and sometimes wondered if they forgot she was in the room. She knew Lola was hoping to get together with Devonte tonight, or at least she assumed so from the way the Asian girl had danced across their room in delight at seeing the outfit her parents had sent, and she knew Selina and Layton had started dating around this time last year.
But the one eyed boy was nowhere to be seen at the moment, which relieved Anti. The last thing she needed was the happy couple standing there pitying her. She breathed out through her nose slowly. "I- I'm not really fond of things like this," she said very quietly, though there didn't seem to be anyone in the vicinity who would be listening in. "I don't like... I don't like all the masks." Way to sound like a child, she congratulated herself sarcastically. You don't like all the masks. What a revelation.
The scars on her torso ached, and for a split second of sheer panic she had to fight to convince herself that the slippery material of her dress was just that, a dress, and not blood on her chest and stomach. But she wasn't bleeding out on the ground in Hogsmeade, she was in the rose garden at a masquerade ball- smell the bloody roses, Anti. "Where's Layton?" she asked timidly. Shadow rises and you are here. And then you cut, you cut it out- And everything goes back to the beginning. Silence seizes a cluttered room... Light is shed not a breath too soon. Anti suddenly thought of hours spent poring over storybooks as a child, trying to insert herself into them in her head as Selina referenced faery stories, but that had been a long time ago. Wishful thinking had never gotten her anywhere. She'd learn to accept things as they came. The statement about masks made her shift uncomfortable in her seat. She should excuse herself and go back inside, but she could hear the music faintly, even from out here, and she couldn't bring herself to stand up. "It's very good," she said politely. "Mine barely covers my face." Cover her face? Not a chance. Mother claimed she was starting to have 'more of her look, and needed to learn to showcase it'. Like a medal. For winning some sort of disturbing lottery Anti didn't think she had ever signed up for. What she really took out of it was that she was no longer thought of as an ugly, gawky child. She was staring to wish she was eleven again."If I'm keeping you from going to look for him- don't let me. It is Valentine's Day." She couldn't keep some dismay from creeping in at the end there. Shadow rises and you are here. And then you cut, you cut it out- And everything goes back to the beginning. Silence seizes a cluttered room... Light is shed not a breath too soon. spaceAmata really should've stayed inside for the time being, she knew; Grayson had said he was going to make it to the ball, and if he actually managed it, she imagined that he'd be in the Great Hall. Possibly looking for her, more likely standing in a corner with his nose in a book. Though, she admitted she might not be giving him enough credit. It wasn't like he didn't pay attention to her when he knew he was supposed to, so reasonably, his priority if he remembered the dance at all would be to hunt her down. Still, it'd felt a bit stuffy inside, and she'd wanted a breath of fresh air. Winter was her favorite time of year, after all, and while some might've thought it too chilly to be outdoors, she found it incredibly refreshing, even with how scantily-clad she was. Not that her dress was inappropriate, it was just of a rather thin fabric, with a rather high slit, hidden by a sheer fabric on top, and happened to sport a bare shoulder. The Gryffindor Head of House took it upon herself to hover menacingly over a pair of sixth years who seemed a little too involved in each other, humming in satisfaction when they hastily separated and the young man asked his partner if she'd like to go inside and dance. Amata wasn't opposed to students having a good time, and it was Valentine's Day, after all, but there were limits on what was appropriate, and that particular pair had been heavily toeing the line. She sighed happily, hands clasping behind her back, and continued her little stroll, a faint smile on her lips. It was rather romantic, after all. Maybe Grayson would know her well enough to come looking for her outside? He knew she preferred cold weather, after all. Or, he ought to, by now. And it wasn't as though it'd be difficult to ascertain that she wasn't in the Great Hall, even with the crowd. She was a good bit taller than most females and a fair few of the males as well, after all.

Anti managed a thin smile and nodded a little. She looked up a little when the other girl said she would stay where she was, and that she didn't deserve 'to be all alone tonight either'. She was used to being alone. If she ever wrote an autobiography at least a third of it would be devoted to talking about how utterly alone she felt most of the time, like she was peering in some happy little snow globe. "I'm not a very good dancer, anyways," she murmured. "Too tall." Her own height somewhat disturbed her; she had obviously inherited it from both of her parents, as had Cy, where Vander had somehow missed out on it and was small and slight. Still taller than her and Cy, but certainly not as tall as other boys his age. Father bemoaned her height; it was intimidating, he said, for a girl to be tall for her age, and it should have been Vander who was towering over most of his classmates. It was the only thing Anti had ever had that Vander did not, and while that thought was slightly frightening, because it was so out of the realm of what was normal for her, it was also slightly triumphant. "How was your winter break?" she then asked, just to fill the gaping silence. Shadow rises and you are here. And then you cut, you cut it out- And everything goes back to the beginning. Layton found his way out into the garden, having just stopped by the refreshments table to grab some snacks. Hey, it wasn't his fault his stomach liked to go rogue every now and again. He had been looking for Selina everywhere, short of going the dungeons--not to mention the masks everyone was wearing made it even harder--and was about to give up his search and think of himself stupid for even assuming this would be her type of deal when he noticed two girls out in the dark conversing, one wearing some sort of cat mask and hair pinned up to make her look significantly older. He raised an eyebrow behind his wolf mask, which if it weren't for how cool it looked he definitely wouldn't be wearing. His eyesight was poor enough as it was, having only one working eye, but having a mask on top of that? It took all he had not to bump into a different person every second. Thankfully all that seeker training had helped hone his eyesight.
He did wonder who his girlfriend was talking to, though, and wasn't inclined to interrupt them quite yet, even if he did have a surprise dug deep into his pocket. He had managed to buy a small, subtle ring for their first anniversary, which now that he thought about it seemed like a bad idea. They were only young teenagers, after all, and he didn't want to seem like he was pushing things too fast. But then again, it wasn't like he was about to get down on one knee and propose to her in the middle of the garden. He sighed and gripped the small box the ring was placed in tightly, walking a bit closer to the pair and thinking that the other masked stranger was Antigone. He knew that Anti was pretty introverted, and might have retreated the second he approached like a scared cat, but that would just have to be a risk he'd take. Tapping who he expected to be his girlfriend, he cleared his throat and spoke. "That's a pretty unique mask compared to the rest of the ones here. You wouldn't happen to be acquainted with a certain Selina Grey, would you?" His lips curled into a smirk which was partially hidden by his mask.

Nah, you don't know me Lightning above and a fire below me You cannot catch me, cannot hold me You cannot stop, much less control me
▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁Where am I? Garden Who am I with? Elliott What am I doing? Deciding his lap is a good place to lie down What am I thinking? I knew I'd find him out here! Who's Important to me? Elliott Holt What am I wearing? Speak of the Devil...▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁
Jesse knew it wouldn't take that long to find Elliott when he came up for the ball. After all, Elliott didn't want to be here to begin with, and it took quite a bit of convincing (as well as liberal use of puppy eyes) to convince Elliott that they should go. Okay, maybe he might have guilt-tripped a bit with mentioning that the only time he'd gone to something like this was during second year with that disastrous Yule Ball. He'd thought that asking a girl out was going to actually be a nice gesture, and instead Arianna had decided it was a pity date. Girls, he decided, were just insane. He'd prefer to stick with his own gender if they were all crazy like that. Well, actually, to be fair, Jojo wasn't all that crazy. She just had a messed up past. Even he could see it, and part of that he attributed to the fact that he had a messed up past himself. He just didn't realize how bad of one until he'd asked about it. She'd glossed over the details, but Jesse didn't need a map of what happened. Anyway, he was here at the ball, not dealing with crazy girls and insane ideas about himself.
He had grabbed a couple of butterbeers from the refreshment area and made his way through the ball, eventually finding his way out to the garden. That was a sure place he knew Elliott was going to be. If nothing else, it was quiet and peaceful, and away from people. He spotted the Ravenclaw rght where he figured he'd be, sitting off by himself and looking about as stiff as he could manage. That took talent, Jesse mused. He set the butterbeer for Elliott right next to him with a slight grin, and then plopped himself down onto the bench, laying his head in Elliott's lap. "One butterbeer, no alcohol, and guaranteed not to lead to accidental confessions." Okay, maybe he was teasing his boyfriend a bit, but he didn't do it that often. He just... hadn't gotten around to admitting he loved Elliott too. Too many confusing feelings tied up in those words, foremost was that the idea that Elliott would finally find out too much about him and just leave.

▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁Where am I? Garden Who am I with? Gia What am I doing? Staying away from the flood of hormones... What am I thinking? ...Really? What am I wearing? Here for Reasons▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁
Carver carried his skateboard in one hand, and had an armful of food in the other. The reason? Gia had decided to attend the ball, and Carver could only roll his eyes at her and sigh, since he knew for a fact he'd be dragged into it as well. Which, lo and behold, he had. He wondered vaguely if this was some sort of experiment for Gia, to see if there was a literal flood of hormones when Valentine's Day approached, but he wasn't certain. Then again, inviting him could have been a test to see how long before he decided to commit suicide from watching the people ogle and make out all night. Which, he was decidedly not ogling Gia. He refused. If he even attempted to look at her, it was directly at her face and nowhere else. Eventually he'd get a handle on this 'friend with boobs' thing.
