The score, in lives, was one to one. But Shangyue was losing and beginning to realize it. Yes, it was a damned shame to lose a brave young lion like Umepatwa. However, taking out Tyfu was a powerful victory and Nyeusi could almost feel the balance shifting - strongly - in favor of the Rebels.

In order to keep control, Shangyue had commanded his remaining loyalists to kill anyone they knew to be even remotely connected to the rebellion. This, of course, included Nyeusi herself. Frankly, she didn't mind. Even if she died, the fact that someone would waste the time and effort trying to kill her would mean they weren't spending that same time and effort on someone who was actually important to the rebellion.

Again, she didn't much know or care who was in charge. The Huntress was perfectly happy to inform anyone who crossed her path why the king-killer should go, but she wasn't about to order anybody.

Leave the plotting to someone else. Nyeusi hadn't met with any real opposition yet, and she intended to keep moving forward. In a damned straight line.

In so little time, Mari's world had been turned completely upside down. Her brothers had been given a chance at glory. They had taken it and proven themselves worthy of their long-suspected father. Then her mother was slain by a Royal Guard, raised up by the king and bound to serve him for it.. losing Tyfu had been devastating, and it only amplified the pain of being passed over by her so-called father.

Mari had no love or loyalty to Shangyue, she didn't need him. She needed her mother, and her mother had been taken from her. She put on a wicked smile and plotted with her brothers as they were given tasks nobody else could seem to manage.. but she had a plan of her own. The lion responsible for Tyfu's death had to pay for what he had done. Orion himself may have been impossible to find but there was one lioness very dear to him that seemed to have a death wish.. and Mari was intent on answering it.

So, the purple lioness found herself waiting patiently in the areas of the pride that were still relatively busy night after night. She wouldn't waste her energy hunting a lioness that would eventually present herself. And, as luck would have it, tonight was her night. Nyeusi came strolling along, looking completely affected by the chaos surrounding so much of the pride. With a smile, Mari picked herself up and made her approach. She was direct, fearless, and determined-- anybody who saw would have no doubt she was intent on a blood confrontation.

The appearance of the younger lioness was not entirely surprising, but Nyeusi could provide no explanation for why she was here tonight. It wasn't a particularly noteworthy night by the moon - the full moon had passed but the Great Lion's Eye was still quite open - nor was there anything of interest happening in the pride tonight.

The lioness in question was another Huntress, and one that Nyeusi would never refer to as a "fellow" in any way. Of Tyfu's children, Mari was the one who'd made their parentage clearest to all the pride.

Still, the black female wasn't about to let the purple intimidate her. She stopped walking and raised an eyebrow - invisible against her dark fur in the night.

"Looking for my father, are you?" She supposed it was remotely possible that Mari sought Uchanjaa, not Orion, but this lioness seemed more likely to want revenge than taking out one of the lion's who'd topped Shangyue's kill list for literal years.

Mari came to a stop a few feet from Nyeusi, her head held high and malicious intent in her eyes. It didn't bother her that her intended target seemed to have no fear or concern for herself, that would make this more satisfying. Nyeusi herself was worthless, it was the value Orion gave his daughter that brought her here.

"Why would I go looking for that coward when you're right here?" she asked, a low growl building up within her.

Who gets help? Nyeusi (1), Mari (2)

Nyeusi offered a harsh bark of laughter in response. Her father wasn't truly a coward, he simply preferred to protect what he valued instead of baring claws and fangs wildly. She wondered, briefly, if the younger lioness thought she'd be an easier target than Orion who now had a known record of success.

"In that case, I have no reason to run," the black lioness replied, bounding forward with claws outstretched.

Not to mention that Mari would probably chase her if she chose to run.

Mari grinned, showing her teeth and shifting her weight in anticipation of a fight- she was not disappointed when Nyeusi leaped forward, intent on putting up a fight. Instead of evading, Mari twisted her body around quickly and moved just enough so that when Nyeusi struck, she hit her trunk instead of anything truly vulnerable, intent on using the momentum and sudden block to force her opponent off whatever path she intended to take. She moved to twist around and get her teeth into Nyeusi when she was struck suddenly by another lion flying at her front end that she promptly collapsed onto the ground with a roar.

Vesper, as always, was diligently guarding his friend-- if you didn't know better, you'd think he was constantly following her around. But truthfully, his presence in times like this was pure luck. He saw Mari approaching Nyeusi and the fight started even as he approached. Unlike Kin, Mari was determined-- and much more likely to be capable of serious harm. But she was so focused on Nyeusi that once Nyeusi pounced, Mari was oblivious to anything else.

And so Vesper had a clear opening. Mari foolishly let Nyeusi hit her and once Vesper joined the fray, it was easy to knock her down.

Nyeusi was almost upset with Vesper for the interruption. After all, she knew how little she mattered to the organized rebellion to which she was reasonably certain the male belonged. But if the black lioness knew her life could be lost with little cost, it still behooved her to not throw it away blindly. The Great Lion frowned on that sort of behavior and suicide wasn't her preference.

She moved to put her shoulder in line with Vesper's. "It may not be a fair fight, but do you really think you can take both of us at once?" the older lioness asked the younger. Then she grinned, a bit of tooth showing in an expression that didn't seem to suit the Huntress' face. Would have, in fact, looked quite at home on the face of Mari's deceased mother.

"Tyfu would probably have been able to. But you're not her."

It required some awkward shuffling when Nyeusi positioned herself so they were pinning down the violent purple lioness. He knew well enough that Nyeusi would throw away her own life in a heartbeat, and he was determined to make sure if it happened, it wasn't without a fight. He kept up a low, threatening growl and said nothing- Nyeusi's taunting said more than enough.

The young purple lioness was seeing stars for a few seconds after she hit the ground, and her first instinct was to struggle but she quickly suppressed it. It required a painful twist but she turned to look Nyeusi directly in the eyes with a snarl.

It was almost as if she didn't see Vesper-- he didn't matter, Nyeusi was the one she was after. She didn't respond but murder was still in her eyes as she lay there. If either of them would just drop their guard a little bit, she was still close enough to strike Nyeusi- that was what mattered.

Vesper watched through narrowed eyes, wondering just how far this would have to go to get the lioness to back down. She was at their mercy and still looked ready to lunge for Nyeusi the second she could get to her feet.

Had rage overcome Mari's ability to use words? Or was she just not really a talker? Nyeusi couldn't be certain, as she herself had avoided the lioness on principle. The black-furred female knew, however, that she could not assume that the purple lioness wasn't thinking everything through. She might not be her mother, but Mari had been trained by Tyfu and therefore could not be underestimated.

Hell, after the Hunters' Strike Nyeusi had been stunned to hear it was Chunyue who'd killed Umepatwa. He'd seemed quite nice, if a bit eager, that night. Perhaps blood had finally told, or perhaps he feared disobeying his parents more than anything else. She wasn't about to ask.

But Nyeusi wasn't above a bit of petty revenge for it. She deliberately inserted her claws into Mari and just as carefully removed them, leaving behind four bleeding puncture wounds.

"We should knock her unconscious and leave her for someone to find," the black lioness told her self-appointed bodyguard.

"Seems like our best chance at walking away," Vesper agreed.

Mari never took her eyes off of Nyeusi, and if she felt the claws she gave no sign. She gave a snort of derisive laughter when the black lioness suggested they knock her unconscious.

"If you want to stop me, you'll have to kill me," she hissed. Her challenge made it clear she didn't think either of them had it in them to do it. That was the rebels' weakness, they had numbers and relative anonymity for so many of them.. and yet only Tyfu was dead.

Vesper sighed and rolled his eyes, looking over to Nyeusi.

"More trouble than that's worth," he said, knowing Mari may be telling the truth but also knowing there were three other lions who would take her place. They might even join her.. but whether there was three or four of them didn't matter. Vesper and Nyeusi were both already targets, killing Mari would do nothing for them.

The black lioness glanced at Mari when she spoke and back to Vesper. She'd had her fun - if you wanted to call it that - and now she was content to leave. Yes, she fully understood that if they left Mari alive, the purple lioness would almost certainly come back for one or both of them. But that was her choice and this was theirs. Neither she nor Vesper wanted to be like Shangyue, and while it was good that Tyfu was dead, it would almost certainly be better if the sinister lioness hadn't been killed.

"Then you'll try again. So be it," the Huntress would have rolled her shoulders in a shrug, but she wasn't quite ready to let go of Mari yet.

Nyeusi looked over to Vesper again. "You're probably the best one to knock her out. You've got the strength and the training. I'll hold her still."
PostPosted: Mon May 23, 2016 7:03 pm
Mari didn't move or look away from Nyeusi, even when the plan started for knocking her out. She didn't care about Vesper except to remember to watch out for him next time she tried, because she would try.

Vesper nodded, shifting his weight cautiously at first but quickly assured that Mari had resigned herself. She was determined but she wasn't stupid, her chance for vengeance tonight had passed and she would wait for a better time. He'd have to talk to Nyeusi's other followers about keeping an eye on her.

With one paw on Mari's throat, he pushed so her head was against the ground and her ability to draw in air was limited at best. A well struck blow when her eyes started to lose focus put her out, and Vesper relaxed.

"If Shangyue sent her after you, he's learning from his mistakes," he said.

Nyeusi remained in place until she was certain that the purple lioness had lapsed into unconsciousness. Then and only then did she plant all four feet on the ground. And now she did shrug.

"I'm not so sure she was sent. Yes, we all know he'd like me, you and a number of others dead. But I don't think this was an assignment," she told the white lion. They stood in silence a few more moments, watching the purple lioness breathe.

"Thank you again," the black female added before turning and vanishing into the moonlit night.
