Shangyue was in a bad situation, but he was confident he had it sorted out well enough. There had been no other option when Meshach had issued a challenge for the throne.. the rebels were winning, he had blown any shot of negotiating but taking such an aggressive approach to dealing with them. It hadn't worked out in his favour. If he wanted to shut them down, he had to accept the challenge and he had to win.
To make sure he won, he was not above playing dirty. If his son had done things properly, nobody would have seen what happened and Shangyue was prepared to twist any accusations leveled against him before their fight. Meshach was an honorable lion, and so far it hadn't gotten him very far. Being underhanded and devious had gotten Shangyue the world.
He'd brought with him a group of his own guards and a few members of his family. He wasn't walking out to meet the rebels unprotected.. just in case there were others less honorable than Meshach. They met in a neutral area, away from the bulk of the rebels, but still.. Shangyue was very obviously outnumbered. He didn't look at them, though. He looked at Meshach. He was hurting but there he stood, so the challenge was not forfeit.
"So, you've finally come home, Uncle," he called, a smug smile on his face.

For all his paranoia and for all the intense build-up to this moment, Shangyue was surprised by the cold ferocity of his uncle. It was so different from the night of his coronation when he foolishly tried to rally a stunned pride against their king. He had his supporters now, he had the bloodlust.. too bad he was injured or he just might stand a chance. It gave the king a great deal of confidence, and it showed in the cocky smile he wore as he began to circle his opponent.
"I am the king," he said, "Seems that you are the traitor here, Uncle. You and your rebels disturbed the peace we built in the time you were gone. None of this had to happen but for your petty grudge."
It was a twisted truth that the king depended on, and he said it loud enough that others might hear and be reminded that this war was their own making, that they had peace before this.
He didn't say anything else, but kept moving, waiting for Meshach to make the first move.

Shangyue scoffed at Meshach's refusal to accept that they had peace after the deaths of his parents and grandparents. If he had truly stayed, he would have seen it. The pride did not suffer under a tyrant after he took the throne, it had flourished as it always had. He had done good, had given the pride the structure it needed to handle its growing size, had given the lower classes greater things to be, to do. But his uncle was not here to talk about that, wouldn't see reason. He had cheated to help win, but he had to do it if he wanted to remain king, to keep doing what he was doing. The pride needed him!
When Meshach roared, Shangyue took his cue to dodge and was out of the way before he could be struck. It helped that blinding rage and fresh injury were affecting the older lion's form.
With a snarl, Shangyue lunged forward, aiming for the Meshach's sensitive face and hoping for an opening.. he had no idea if his uncle was aiming to kill, he expected it but also doubted he had it in him.. but the king, he had no problem aiming to kill. He might have sent others to do his dirty work lately, but he was a strong lion still in his peak and he had done this before. He would kill again if that's what it took.

Shangyue was a silent fighter, he didn't need to make use of any intimidating tactics now. He would do better showing Meshach exactly what he was capable of instead of trying to scare him out of finding out, his uncle wasn't going to stop, he knew that. It had been so long, this had been coming for ages..
He felt his claws catch Meshach's face but he couldn't keep a grip. He reared up to try to get his teeth into the other lion's ears but Meshach stood upright-- it was only by chance that the king was already headed upwards and could keep up with him. When heavy paws and sharp claws hit his face, he went downward with them and pushed himself into Meshach's mane.
It was thick and damned near impossible to get through, but he would try. At best, he found something vital and ended this. At worst, he hoped, getting so close would put Meshach off balance. Unfortunately for him, the older lion was not standing still and making it easy. The weight of the other lion on his back made every movement more difficult.
