"I love you."
"No, I love you more."
"No, I love--shells!"
The dark haired M'vey blinked, staring down at his lover. It wasn't often the two had a chance to steal away. Threadfall had returned, and that meant the two lovewherries found themselves training hard, running sweeps, and fighting the deadly enemy. It didn't help that his brownrider boyfriend, R'lon, had found himself temporarily transferred to Western Weyr to help the smaller Weyr out. Though he'd only been gone six months, it had felt like an eternity to M'vey. They could only see one another on rest days, and sometimes those days didn't always fall together. For all that they had dragons, and could go almost anywhere on Pern, it wasn't always easy to make the time. Training took a lot out of both riders, and the what little free time they could afford sometimes went to other duties. Furthermore, sometimes their dragons just weren't in the mood to shuffle them around -- their dragons needed rest too.
So it was, M'vey was left angsting in High Reaches Weyr, waiting for the day R'lon could return. He would never admit that maybe, just maybe, R'lon didn't want to return to High Reaches. It was why he had picked a small island off the coast of Ista. It was warm, small, and the minor beach Hold didn't mind visitors. It was quiet, cozy, and the two could dig their toes in the sand, and otherwise be left alone to enjoy one anothers companionship.
They had set out a nice picnic; R'lon had brought some tasty treats from Western, M'vey had brought some wine from Tillek -- Benden be damned -- and they were goiing to enjoy the warm sunshine, and hopefully an even hotter night.
But instead, their loving devotions had been interrupted by his blond haired companion's exclamation. ". . . Shells?" M'vey repeated, not at all following his love.
R'lon gave a quick shake of his head, before reaching out to point. "No, shells! Eggs! Faranth, look, there are fire-lizards hatching right down there! Quick, get some of those meatrolls, and hurry! Maybe we can Impress one." R'lon gave a whistle, and his brown dragon, who had been happily curled up with his blue mate, lifted his head to look over. "Let Western know we found a clutch, and hurry! Send 'em the coordinates."
"R'lon, there's another one, but this one dosn't look like it's ready. Zenoth, pet, let High Reaches know we found a few clutches on Ista's Beach." The blue dragon, far more keen about the hatching clutch, was quick to relay the message to his wingmates.
"Better Impress one quick, before this cove gets crowded!" M'vey laughed. Let his lover try to Impress. He was going to steal a few eggs back to sell from the second, younger clutch. Maybe, if R'lon gave him a few good kisses, he'd let his lover take some back to Western to give out.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
[[OOC: All right! This is the first of two fire-lizard giveaways. This one is for all folks who can steal away to try to fetch a firelizard. The clutch is disappearing quickly, so there will only be a few lizards left to Impress for new arrivals. Make a post explaining how your character got to the area, and what they might treat they might temp the babies. I will randomize the posts and surprise individuals with their pets.
IMPORTANT: This is available to everybody ICly. Western and High Reacyes Weyr will get the official news and notice. If you do not have someone in those Weyrs, all you need to do is come up with a logical reason for why they're at this remote beach location. Riders, non-riders, Candidates, Holdfolk, if you can find a reason to be at the beach, then grab some noms, and see if you can coax a firelizard! This is based on characters, not player, so bring in as many as you'd like!
Candidates for both Weyrs, this is your lucky day. You both just happen to have it be a rest-day, so if you can hitch a ride (you can make up an NPC that brings you), come on down.
Since this is an ICly event, this means only bring in characters that want the chance to Impress a fire-lizard. This will be ICly Impressions -- your character will be trying to feed baby firelizards, so you can't give the firelizard to someone else later. I will also move baby firelizards around until they hatch. As individuals post and RP, I will randomize from the group, and move the baby flits accordingly.
While your characters can scour the beach for more eggs, unfortunately, M'vey got the only other clutch and will be spiriting them away to sell with R'lon. I'll run that contest after this little IC games, so fret not. There will be eggs to give away soon. yum_cupcake

Like the lovewherries on the beach, Fehral couldn't quite take his eyes off of a certain someone-- however, in this case, it was the dragon that he and Chayrel had been fortunate enough to hitch a ride from. The beautiful Blue had a truly massive wingspan from this angle. Just getting the chance to fly on a dragon out over the water was amazing. Admittedly, the cold of between hadn't been nearly so enjoyable as the rest of the trip. Yet he'd endure it happily again if it meant a chance at a firelizard egg! Err. Firelizard hatchling, even. They'd brought food with them, and he meant to get himself a flitter.
"Chayrel, c'mon! We've gotta get there before all of the babies have Impressed!" Fehral cried as he slid down the dragon's leg. They'd barely landed and he was already off like a shot. Of course, the rider had dismounted first. That was the protocol, and-- and there were baby firelizards! "Come to daddy," he told the hatching firelizards before he even saw them. ... And then there they were. Tiny babies, aww! With food in hand he tried to entice one of the little beasties.

Dolmar had, frankly, no interest in a 'fun, relaxing day at the beach'. In fact, he was fuming that his fellow candidates had even taken up the amount of his time needed to ask him along. Were they completely unaware of the situation? Of chores needing done, and records to scour, and literally anything they could be doing to make themselves useful?
Apparently. Not.
He'd been halfway from his fifth best scowl to snapping at the lot of grating youngsters before one had piped up that there were apparently firelizards hatching. Because that didn't make every bit of difference in the world, nooo, of course not! He was surrounded by incompetents. In fact, he hadn't even bothered to tell them he'd be coming along, hadn't even waited for them before slipping away into the kitchens and then gracefully scaling to the back of a green dragon who's rider also wanted to nab one of the tiny creatures, and been off.
His curt word of thanks to the rider was sincere, but clearly distracted, and it was a boon that she seemed unbothered by it. Too busy rummaging in her pack for food, probably. The beanpole of a young man made all haste for the beach until at last the trembling shells and creeling newborns came into view. Then he had the sense to slow down, creeping closer so as to not startle any and ruin his chances with them. From a small pouch at his side he pulled a few small pale puff-like bits of food—upon close enough inspection, they would be revealed as spiderclaw, baked into and erupting out of bits of flaky pastry. Delicious, and honestly a waste to offer up and not indulge in himself, but the potential value of a firelizard or two to call his own? No, sacrifices would simply have to be made.
"Here, then," He cooed. Or as close as ever had been muttered from the still-grimacing youth. "Come have these, they're much better..." At least in his opinion they were.

Caderyn sat on the back of Gareth, behind his father, holding on as they flew towards the beach. There had been word of a firelizard hatching and Caderyn had asked his father for a ride, they both had the day off. It was easy for A'dras to say yes to his son about the ride. He was curious about the firelizards as well. He had never impressed one, just having impressed Gareth when he was younger. He figured it would be nice for Caderyn to get one of the lizards, until he impressed a dragon, it would give him the practice of having something to care for.
Gareth landed on the beach and let out a huff when Caderyn jumped off and ran forward without even a thank you. He looked back at A'dras as the older man slid off of his back and he smiled at him, giving a shrug of his shoulders. "At least we get to spend some time at the beach." The message that returned to him from Gareth made him let out a hearty chuckle.
Caderyn had left his father behind and he was pulling a couple of bubbly pies and meatrolls from his pouch. He approached the nest, having slowed down once he neared it and squatted on his haunches, watching the babies as they emerged. He held a pie and roll in his hand, and waited.

It was a nice day. Why not steal away from the doldrums of training and work, even if just for a while? Kieza was excited, especially when word reached her and excited tension spread through the air that the firelizards were nesting and that some were even hatching! The girl scratched her head in thought as she walked, listening to the giggling and shouting of excitable Candidates like herself. To her side, she carried a pack of lunch to eat up on the sand dunes under the warm sunlight. It wasn't much, consisting of various fruit she managed to spirit away from the kitchen after her work was finished, along with some day old crust bread and even a few pieces of dried jerky. It didn't seem like much, but to Kieza it was a feast perfect for the day. A smile pulled at her face, her cheeks a little ruddy with the heat.
She had a moment that she wished she had worn someone over her head to shield her eyes. Oh well... She would remember that for future reference.
As she stepped over a patch of tangled seagrass, her eyes widened as she took in the sights, firelizards flitted about like small bugs. And tinier replicas of parents she noted in nest that dotted the sands, but most seemed not quite ready to hatch or were still in the process. Her heart fluttered excitedly. Maybe one would choose her...
The girl reached down and untied her shoes, lifting them in one hand as she began trekking through the sands toward one of the few nests that weren't noticed by others quite yet. But it wouldn't be long.
The atmosphere felt almost festival-like in excitement.

Everything seemed to happen so fast. One moment he had been enjoying his day off at High Reaches, and the next he was on a blue dragon making his way to some beach! If the shock between climates had't been bad enough -- High Reaches was still snow covered and cold while the southern Istan beach was substantially warmer -- then the shock of other people appearing out of nowhere was.
Dragons were appearing out of Between all over, and delivering their passengers. Already he could count a brown, another blue, a green, and even a bronze. He didn't know if they were all from High Reaches or not, but it seemed like the beach was going to get crowded and fast. "Best get going, lad, lest there be none left for ye." It seemed as if the rider hadn't been as quick to leave as Chayrel had thought. Sliding down the blue dragons arm, he almost gave it a pat in thanks, before taking off after Fehral. Someone was certainly excited.
Thankfully, it didn't take him long to spot the crouched Candidate, and the black haired lad had to hide a snicker. It was strangely endearing to see such a large Candidate coo over the babies. Chayrel wasn't entirely sure about all the competition. The hatchlings were spilling over the sands, seeking out food, while others were still struggling out of their shells. So he gave a little whistle, hoping to attract the attention of one. "I've got some treats here." Or maybe the flits would respond better to talking? A glance around showed everybody trying to entice a firelizard over.
Crouching next to Fehral, he reached out to offer half a crusty meatroll. He wasn't sure whether or not it would do; most of the food had been leftover breakfast and snacks they'd stashed in the Barracks. But food was food, and maybe one would come over.

Ashlyn had decided to spend some time with her sister, Demanthra, since it was a day for them to rest. The baby was with her weyrmate, so she was cleared to enjoy her day. The sisters had not decided what they wanted to do quite yet, when Gyafrith got the message about firelizards hatching.
'Ashlyn mine, I just got word from Zenoth of a few firelizard clutches at Ista's Beach,'the blue dragon passed on to his rider. The twenty eight year old perked at the news, knowing both she and her sister would love to have firelizards.
"Demanthra, there are firelizards hatching. Do you want to go?"she asked her sister. The younger girl's eyes lit up and she nodded her head excitedly, before dragging her older sister to the kitchen. After all, she reasoned her sister had connections in the kitchen, so it would be easy to get some meat. As soon as they got to the kitchen, they managed to get some meat, before hurrying out to Gyafrith. Ashlyn got her beloved dragon all ready, before both sisters climbed on his back.
It wasn't long before the blue dragon and his passenger's arrived at the beach and he landed carefully. Ashlyn could see there were plenty of people already here, which didn't surprise her. Demanthra pulled out the meat, before handing some to Ashlyn. Then the pair walked over to the nearest clutch and knelt down.
"Here little ones, fresh meat,"Demanthra cooed softly.

A small, delicate creature gave a shriek of hunger. With a writhing twist, the little green fire-lizard reached out with its wing and scratched at the sand and grasses. Life was awfully difficult for a little firelizard, and there were all sorts of feelings, sights, and sounds happening.
Struggling through the sands, it eventually tumbled down a small hill, and landed right at the bare feet of Kieza. Digging its little wing claws in, it reached out to bite at the girls feet, hoping that maybe, just maybe, one of her toes was something tasty. Thankfully, the baby firelizards teeth were small, and it was weak from birth.
With another plaintive shriek, it tried to snake around the girls ankle, biting where it could. It was very obvious it wanted to be fed, and it wanted to be fed now.
((Congratulations! This little green wants Kieza... Or at least wants Kieza's lunch. If she feeds the little thing it will be hers! These are adult lines, but feel free to play the hatchling as just that, a hatchling. Firelizards only get two stages right now -- egg and adult.))

It wasn't often that Feah got time off, and rarer still was it for her to range far afield on such a day save for a fishing trip. Unfortunately, Cinath had been... well, Cinath, and entirely too curious about the idea of fire lizards hatching to let His direct him to a more uninhabited place. Fire lizards were silly and annoying creatures, but they were so small and he wanted to see the babies.
Besides, it sounded like nearly everyone worth anyone was going to be there, and he didn't want to miss out on the gossip!
Rarely one to deny her dragon anything, Feah had reluctantly agreed. Seeing the small crowd gathered as she and Cinath flew in, however, she was gripped by a little uncertainty, and it took Cinath mentally and physically nudging her to get her to approach. In truth, Feah wasn't certain what she could do with a fire lizard, but she knew they were nice little pets, as long as they behaved. Perhaps it was really Cinath who wanted a friend?
A snort at her back and a decidedly miffed retort from her dragon brought a small chuckle from the bluerider, and with a little bag of meatrolls in hand (originally intended to keep her fed on her fishing day), she drew down to the beach to get a look at the clutches. Even if she and Cinath left without any company of the fire lizard variety, this was proving to be enjoyable so far. Anything that let her spend a little time by the ocean, especially with her dragon, was worth doing.

Alright. Well, alright. The beach had gone from sparse to overfull a bit too fast for Dolmar's tastes. Sure, there were ample eggs and babies starting to crawl out, but every time he heard the tell-tale woosh of wind beneath an arriving dragon's wings, the odds dropped further and further out of his favor.
His face crinkled in a rather sour expression as he cast some not-so-flattering side-eyes at the others gathered around, and shuffled ever so slightly closer to the cacophony that was the mass of hatchlings, the hand full of spiderclaw puffs thrusting further in, almost but not quite shoving another hopeful's arm aside in the process. He did spare a short nod of apologies to whomever it was—he wasn't a trained diplomat for nothing, but really, they'd understand, he was sure. Things were hectic, and everyone was in it for themselves. "Here, here little ones. You don't want stale food, right? This is fresh, and piquant, and you're better than fusty old meatrolls, aren't you?" Not that the firelizards would understand what he said, or really care about what food was offered, or possibly know what 'fusty' meant...Maybe if he tried to look friendly, smiled or something. They were telepathic, right? So he'd just have to seem inviting.
((If anyone wants to be the person he nearly shoved, that's cool~ Could be fun to start up a little grudge/rivals sort of thing, orrr maybe if they let it slide, eventual...well I dunno if anyone'd ever call Dolmar a friend, lol.))
