Name: J'xsen (formerly Jaxsen)
Age: 28
Nameday: 3547.12.13
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: anything that moves
Weyr: Western
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Pickpocket/thief
Physical Description: At 6'3", J'xsen is tall, slim and lanky and a rather handsome fellow (and don't he know it!). His fair-skinned slightly longish face is sharp-featured and angular, with cheekbones to die for, a straight nose and a strong jawline. Piercing blue eyes gaze at one lazily from beneath straight dark eyebrows that make him look like he's questioning something. He wears his dark brown hair parted on the right with longish floppy fringe, about collar-length and often tied back into a stupid little man-bun; he also wears neatly groomed sideburns that extend to the edge of his jaw.
Clothing-wise, he prefers button-up shirts with the top few buttons left open, and close-fitting leather pants tucked into tall boots. He looks like an elegant, decadent wastrel of a man. His flight leathers are brown and suitably battle-scarred.
Personality: The best single word to describe J'xsen is "incorrigible." A charmingly rogue-ish, blue-eyed reprobate with a winning smile and a silver tongue, he's unrepentant and irredeemable. He knows full well the consequences of his actions and accepts them with an almost inappropriate glee (even if they hurt him or leave a mark) because the results are usually SO WORTH IT. Combine his talents for sweet-talking his way into (or out of) just about any situation with his tall, rangy, dark good looks, and you've got the recipe for a natural-born con artist and all-around jerk.
J'xsen knows he's a jerk, too -- it's an appellation he's more than willing to own. He is lazy in the conservation-of-energy way; he puts more effort into trying to avoid doing something than if he'd JUST BLOODY DO IT. Survival is something else he is a natural at; clever and adaptable, he's just as happy scrounging leftovers from the day's meals as he is feasting like a Lord. He's not a material boy -- growing up in a tribe of dozens of equally out-of-control street rats, he's never really developed an attachment to Things.
J'xsen is a social creature who enjoys just BEING with other people. He views his friends and acquaintances almost as possessions. He's a "pleaser" in his own weird way; the happiness of those around him is very important to him, and he's not above meddling in their lives if he thinks they're not happy. He likes his pleasures small and large, preferably large; he has positively voracious appetites, in all things. Most disconcerting, though, is how detached a hedonist he is; he loves pleasure but feels little true
passion for anything. It's all a game to him, and as soon as it stops being fun or a challenge, he loses interest.
He really,
really dislikes being alone with himself. Solitude gives the tunnel snakes in his brain too much time to chew on things, largely having to do with his own failings as a human being (of which he is WELL aware). It's when he's been by himself with only his own thoughts that he comes up with his wildest notions and schemes -- the kind that tend to end badly for someone. Usually him.
You can bet, though, that if trouble happens and J'xsen is involved, it was his carefully-planned idea. Everything he does is calculated for optimum effect. And while he may seem impulsive, he is most certainly not rash. Even so, he's extremely unpredictable; he can be maddeningly patient about some things and just as maddeningly IMpatient about others, and it's impossible to anticipate which he'll be in any given situation. Keeps everyone on their toes. At his core he's a cool cookie who does what he wants, and luckily most of that matches up with what he's expected to do as a dragonrider. He knows the rules inside and out and is careful to follow them, in spirit at least if not in letter, lest he find himself in deeper trouble than he cares to get into..
Despite his many character flaws, J'xsen really does have a good heart. When he meddles in people's affairs, he's not doing it out of any kind of self-interest -- he's doing it because he genuinely cares about them. He's a rogue with a heart of gold, more concerned with the welfare of those he considers friends than he is with his own. As a dragonman, he's concerned with the greater good as well; seeing first-hand how Thread destroyed lives and livelihoods in Rivercrest Hold and environs during that first Threadfall in a thousand years, he feels it's his purpose to defend all the people of Pern from this deadly menace.
Positive Trait List clever, cool, bold, social, a survivor, heart of gold
Negative Trait List Lothario, incorrigible, lazy, unpredictable, unrepentant, jerk
History:Jaxsen was born on the streets of Rivercrest Hold and abandoned at a very early age. The young boy grew up in a large group of other children led by a man named Harlin; this man took in waifs and strays and trained them to pick pockets and scam people in exchange for food and shelter. Jaxsen became one of the more successful thieves, always sensing just the right moment to pick a pocket or cut a purse and make off with whatever marks or anything else of value was inside. He rarely got caught, and when he did he would tearfully spin such a tale of woe that his victim would not only refuse to press charges, they would give him as much as a half-mark to help. Which he would pocket and not tell Harlin about.
By time he was 17, Jaxsen had his own little side hustle going. He was the leader of his own group of kids out of Harlin's bunch, making them do the dirty work of picking pockets and cutting purses while he got all the praise from Harlin (and kept a cut of the loot for himself). Only the most cunning street rats were enlisted by Jaxsen, and he readily shared the spoils with them. He looked out for them as if he was their protective big brother, ensuring they were fed and clothed well and running interference for them if they got caught -- or worse, got in trouble with Harlin.
Jaxsen made the mistake one day of trying to pickpocket a dragonrider. He had no idea the man was from Western Weyr and ignored the nearby dragon -- he was used to seeing dragons around and thought nothing of it. Unfortunately, the dragon saw what he was doing and warned his rider, who immediately turned on the young man. The dragonman was ready to bash Jaxsen's head in when his dragon Searched the would-be thief, much to the surprise of all concerned. Reluctantly, the rider took Jaxsen back to Western Weyr for training as a Candidate.
A smart kid who knew a good thing when it bit him, he took to Weyr life like he was born to it. He did surprisingly well in class for a street rat, absorbing everything he was taught (including reading and writing; he was a functional illiterate, letters being one thing Harlin never taught the kids). He Impressed brown Zukiath his second time on the sands when the little brown came up behind him and pushed him forward into the sand, thus claiming him.
Accepting the gravity of what he'd gotten himself into, J'xsen and Zukiath did well as Weyrlings, even managing to stay mostly out of trouble until graduation into a fighting wing. They've still managed to stay mostly out of trouble...
Other:DRAGON
Name: Zukiath
Age: 10, shelled 3565.08.06 from Lyraeth x Xoth's clutch at Western Weyr
Color: Brown
Size: 40'
Physical Description: Zukiath is a big handsome burly brown on the large and muscular side of average, with wide powerful wings and good stamina. His hide is a warm woody brown in color with faint dark stripes on his legs.
Personality: Zukiath is a Good Boy. A big, sweet dragon who dislikes getting into trouble, he sees it as his job to hold J'xsen's more out of control traits and schemes in check. Choosing J'xsen as His was a no-brainer for this brown; he saw in the young man a cool, calm and collected soul with a heart of gold that was perfectly suited to riding a fighting dragon. Obedient and moderately intelligent, Zukiath knows that His is good at following direction and thinking quickly, and is quick to do as he is instructed. He's not the brightest glow in the bunch, though, and is easily pranked and fooled by other dragons. Luckily, this good-natured fellow just laughs it all off and doesn't seek revenge or retaliation (even if his rider might).
Despite being a Good Boy, Zukiath is just as bold and sociable as J'xsen and can be a right charmer to the right lady dragon. He enjoys flights quite a bit and is always up for the challenge of catching. He's a powerful flyer, agile for a big brown, and is ferocious when fighting Thread. Zukiath really enjoys the company of others and will often hang out at the lake or on the uppermost heights of the Weyrbowl sunbathing and laughing with whomever else is there with him.
