Physical Description: Tyanan's light brown hair has been sunbleached a pale pale blond, so light it's almost pure white from all the time he's spent out in the ocean amongst the dolphins. It's mostly straight, just brushing the tops of his shoulders, with heavy cowlicky bangs that keep wanting to fall in his face. Honey-copper tanned in complexion, Tyanan has strong cheekbones, jawline and chin, a straight, slightly pointed nose, and a fullish mouth usually sporting either a faint sly smile or a wide feral grin. His eyes are hooded and slightly uptilted, hazel with dark brows and lashes. At 6' even, Tyanan is slim in build, lean and ripped but not beefy. He carries himself in a relaxed, confident manner; he's proud of his physical condition and deeply comfortable in his own skin.
Tyanan's fashion sense can best be described as beachbum couture; his palette of choice seems to be primarily cool, subdued colors (read: so washed out it can be hard to tell what color they once were). He wears plain shirts in various states of wear (when he bothers with a shirt); plain trousers occasionally rolled up almost to his knees; and beat-up boots (when he bothers with footwear). He also wears a battered dark grey leather duster-type coat when it gets chilly. Surfing calls for ugly board shorts.
Personality: Tyanan is one of those people who comes across as genuinely larger than life. He's fully aware he can be a serious badass at times, but doesn't flaunt it unless necessary; in truth, he's an easy-going, happy-go-lucky guy with a very live-and-let-live outlook on life and absolutely no fear. The True Love of his life is the ocean; he lives for surfing, especially big-wave surfing, a passion he developed amongst the dolphineers.
The word that best describes Tyanan is shameless. He's almost completely lacking in society-imposted morals (such as "men can only do this, women can only be that" etc.), though he does have an extremely strong set of personal ethics that he abides by and will fight for. He's an unashamed mooch and master scrounge; his catchphrase could well be, "Are you going to eat that?" He likes doing things for his friends and loves to play Mr. Helpful -- if something needs doing, he'll give you a hand regardless of what it is. Gregarious and sociable, Tyanan has never met a stranger. He considers everyone a friend, from the lowest drudge in the Lower Caverns to the Weyrwoman herself (whom he thinks is a hoot, he just adores her and would follow her to the Red Star itself).
Tyanan is not an inherently violent man, but sometimes his behavior will remind you just how dangerous he can be, especially when he's angry. His temper is of the slow-burn-then-explode variety, though nothing makes him blow up faster than someone harassing his friends or violating his personal ethics -- he will go from Mellow Dude to Mop The Floor With The Troublemaker faster than you can blink. Tyanan suffers from rampaging perfectionism, though of a purely personal nature. He gets frustrated and angry with himself when he can't do something perfectly the first time, or when he doesn't live up to his own ridiculously high standards, and will keep pushing himself sometimes well past the point of reason. And when the frustration gets to be too much, he'll often just take off down to the beach; the ocean is his safety valve, and keeps him from doing anything stupid when he's upset.
Tyanan is a team player and functions most effectively in a group. He might clash with his superiors on occasion -- largely over Threadfighting tactics -- but he's steadfastly loyal to his fellow Candidates and his Weyr. He takes his duties very seriously, even as a Candidate; he studies hard, he makes sure his chores are done to perfection, he stands patiently for a dragonet to choose him, and he does it all with a smile and the certainty that if he doesn't get chosen, next time will be the one.
Positive Trait List adaptable, tenacious, fearless, steadfast, takes his duties very seriously
Negative Trait List impulsive, relentless in the extreme, amoral, ruthless, personal perfectionist
History:Tyanan was born to a pair of dolphineers at Dolphin Hall, at Rubicon River Hold on the Southern Continent. His parents, Tyaa and Ronan, were avid surfers as well as skilled dolphineers, and Tyanan fell in love with the ocean and learned to surf at an early age. He often accompanied his parents to go surfing with their dolphins; he loved surfing and was a natural with the dolphins, so it was a logical next step to become an apprentice Dolphineer at age 12.
The teen excelled as a dolphineer. By age 15 he was only a scant few Turns away from walking the tables to Journeyman when Thread returned after an interval of 1000 years. It destroyed half the buildings of the Hall; the dolphins, living in the water, were spared for the most part (as Thread dies in the water of the ocean), but many of the humans at the Hall perished… including his mother.
Tyanan was heartbroken. He thought about leaving the dolphin craft and becoming a dragonrider, just so he could avenge his mother's death, but he couldn't leave his dolphin friends behind. He couldn't make up his mind what he wanted to do. Then about a sevenday later a dragonrider came through from far-off Western Weyr, Searching for likely candidates to become dragonriders. A number of young apprentices and journeymen were rounded up and presented to the big brown dragon and his rider, and Tyanan was among the few selected as the most likely to Impress a dragon. The dragonrider told those selected to decide quickly if they wanted to go or not. There was a clutch on the sands -- Candidates were needed
now! Faced with the choice he hadn't wanted to make, Tyanan had to make a snap decision: stay and help rebuild the Dolphineer Hall, or take a chance and go to Western Weyr to stand for a clutch? In the end, the thought of staying at the Hall was more than he could bear, and he packed a small bag of his possessions and left to start a new life -- one he would succeed at just as much as he had being a Dolphineer.
Western Weyr, it turned out, was much to his liking, even as a Candidate. He has stood for clutches over the span of several Turns without Impressing, but that hasn't staunched his enthusiasm for the Weyr or his determination to become a dragonrider one little bit.
