It took a little while, but Declan was able to come out of her shell and become the talkative individual she always should have been. Though sometimes a little shy at the beginning, it doesn't take long for that talkative blonde to emerge.

Schoolwork was an outlet for her to funnel her stresses and frustrations. That made her naturally better at her work than her peers around her. She took a liking to reading at an early age because it also provided her an escape from the natural world around her, though her reading subjects were limited to those approved by his parents.

Unlike most from her normal life, Declan is very open and understanding of others and their ways of life. While her parents are quick to condemn anything that isn't approved by the church, she was different and understood, but more than that, accepted the lifestyles of those around her.

Her friends have come to count on Declan to be there for them. Declan is fiercely loyal to those around her. She will go out of his way to assist a friend in need, even if it costs her physically.

At a young age, she discovered her gift for prose, writing poetry for her early childhood writing class. She excelled more than others when writing and attempted other forms of art including sketching and charcoal art. But none let her express himself like poetry allowed.

Exploring, learning new things, searching through ruins, Declan enjoys it all. Her parents took him to a hiking trail in the south of Ireland once and while hiking, Declan found an old ruin overgrown with vines that he explored. She loves exploring old buildings, libraries, and basically anywhere she can get lost in fantasy.

xxxDeclan was born to Brian and Maeve McNamara in the city of Limerick, Ireland. Declan is their only child, who was brought to them by God after many years of prayer, according the his mother. His mother, Maeve, works as a clinical assistant at St. John's Hospital in Limerick and his father is employed as professor of English Lit at Thomond Community College. He was baptized at St Lelia's Church and given the name Benedict. At an early age, Declan showed an interest in girls' toys over boys' toys, something that his parents did not approve of and he was sequestered away from his cousins' toys to prevent anything from tarnishing their perfect boy. Growing up as a single child was difficult for him because he was the sole focus of his parents and they insisted on him being the perfect child. Before he was even enrolled in primary school, his parents had insisted on getting him a tutor and making sure he was "set up for success". His parents tried to get him to play piano and violin to broaden his horizons, but he showed little to no skill with either.

xxxUpon being enrolled in Corpus Christi Catholic School, it became apparent that Declan was not like the other children in school. It had been impressed on him at a very young age that he shouldn't speak unless spoken to, which made him very awkward around other children. This led to him being bullied in school a lot. He focused himself in his school work and quickly excelled, impressing his teachers who saw the brilliant student through the awkward nature. He also discovered his love for poetry during his time at school. Despite his teachers focusing on his academics, they ignored the bullying because children will be children.

xxxDeclan's first taste of the wizarding world came on his eleventh birthday when a surprise visitor arrived at his eleventh birthday party, the Hogwarts Governess Nora Heulwen. She brought with her Declan's Hogwarts acceptance letter and clued the McNamaras about the wizarding world. Declan's grandfather revealed that he was from a wizard family but had been born without magic and had chosen to live in the Muggle world. Nora took Declan to Diagon Alley to purchase his school supplies and get his wand. The entire experience was amazing for Declan and he was suddenly very optimistic about his future.

xxxThe day he was to leave for Hogwarts, Mrs Nora came to bring him to the train station so he could begin his journey to Hogwarts. But first, he was introduced to another first year boy from another Muggle house, Sebastian Moon. They would be classmates and travel to school together. Sebastian, better know as Seb, immediately befriended Declan and they quickly became friends. At school, Declan and Seb joined a bunch of clubs like the Herbology Club and the Cooking Club, both things Declan was heavily interested in but discouraged from at home. He enjoyed almost all of his classes except for Defense Against the Dark Arts, which kind of scared him. He also made friends with many other students in his year and several older students as well.

xxxAt the start of second year, Declan made friends with the new first years from his house, starting to come out of his shell more. He spent most of his free time hanging out with his best friend. During second year, Declan discovered that he liked his hair long and resisted his parents' attempt to have it cut during his winter break. He began to question his gender identity even more than the previous year. Declan also embraced a more relaxed clothing style, shedding more of the restrained church appearance.

xxxThird year brought a whirlwind of changes for Declan. Mounting conflicting feelings welling within him brought him to Ms Marni's office to question his gender. Ms Marni explained it was natural for some people to feel like they didn't belong in the body they were born into and Declan was not a boy, but a girl in a boy's body. Coming to that revelation did take a weight off Declan's chest. At first Declan went by they, but determined she was a better pronoun. Declan told Seb who immediately accepted her. Then she spread the news amongst friends and family (not her birth family, of course) who all accepted her. Also, during the spring semester, Seb was attacked by a werewolf and turned. Declan threw a fit to make sure he was found, earning herself her first ever detention. But Seb was found and eventually recovered from the pneumonia, but would forever be a werewolf. Declan still loved Seb and made sure he knew it.
