According to a book I just finished reading, Godless, the meaning of life was that the ocean got lonely in time and space. Why the ocean? Because water is the source of life.

well, in my opinion, the meaning if life is simpley to reproduce. See, humans in general are very self obsorbed beings (not meaning to be offensive) and when we say "whats the meaning of life" we automatically take it as "what is the meaning of 'our' life". This, i think, is where many people tend to go wrong with this analysis. we should be looking at all life on this planet. when we do this, we realise that the one single thing that each of us have in common... is reproduction (dispite the means). make sense?
well, thats my oppinion anyways, feel free to scrutinise.. biggrin

Personally, I don't think there IS a meaning to life. I mean, why should there be? We're all here, trying to pass on our genes, and sometimes we do and sometimes we don't. Things change, adapt, and evolve, but does that imply a higher purpose?
Rather than seeking out a purpose for yourself, I find it much more fulfilling to decide on one on your own. We define our purpose, not the other way around.

Well, me and my friend were having this discussion and came up with the conclusion that love is the meaning of life and that if you have not felt love or realised you have felt it or love no-one then your life is meaningless. Love is something everyone needs, it makes them feel happy and secure, happiness is key to a full life and if you don't feel secure, well your not going to be happy and you won't find love. Bit corny but it will do for now.

love is the most important thing in life. its the most amazing thing you'l ever experience so i ca see why you said that. i believe the meaning of life is experience. to experience as much as you can in the world we've been dropped into.

It can also be quoted from George Carlin that the meaning of Human life is Plastic.
Plastic is not a naturally created substance. Mankind evolved to make plastic, and once there are no more crude oils, and no more plastic to be made, then mankind will be destroyed.
Seriously though, the meaning of life is a tricky subject.
Maybe it is not meant for people to understand the purpose of all life. It might be something etched into the minds of people, but mercifully blocked out by the unconcious part of the psyche in an attempt to give people a reason to live. therefore, in my opinion, the meaning of life is to search for it, but never find it. To unlock a true concrete meaning would be to end life.
But that's just me, and I'm just Lovecraftian like that... *Is likely to read "Nathicana" again, before going to bed*

there's no meaning of life. i can't believe there is because for me there is no afterlife. when we are dead it will be as if we've never existed. except maybe to the people who are still alive, but hey, they'll die soon enough too. there's no meaning to life or living, as long as there is death. the question should rather be, what's the meaning of death?
