So, some of you may be aware of the George W. Bush's hositility against things that differ from his views, and may have even heard his statement that, according to him, Wicca is not a religion, and should not be counted as a religion in the military. Well, setting aside the fact that I myself am a Wiccan, I believe in freedom of religion for everyone no matter what path the choose to follow, obviously not something our "President" supports. Well, a petition has been created stating that Wicca IS a religion, wether Georgie likes it or not, and if he doesn't retract his statement and a few other conditions are met, he will be taken to civil court in 2007 (hopefully). If you believe in the freedom of religion, please support this cause.Even if you don't wish to sign it, please just read itClick Here to Support Freedom of Religion! Thanks to those who sign, or at least take the time to read it. heart Thank you! heart Blessed Be!

Sorry, this isn't really a discussion as of yet. Please add some topics you'd like to see discussed or debated, that way I won't have to move it to the chatterbox (although there it will probably get more publicity).

Okay, discussion - do you think the President should be allowed to make any sort of religious statement to a country this diverse?

Because of the separation of church and State, the President doesn't really have any say in what makes a religion or not, although I'm sure he may think otherwise. People can say what they want about things, but from a purely legal standpoint, Wicca may not be considered a religion by the Federal government as outlined by Congress for legal reasons, usually tax purposes as well as military service.

I signed that petition quite a while ago. 3nodding I think it's horrid that people still feel that way about other religions in America, one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world (if not the most).
But people will keep making statements like that. It's unfortunate that we have a president that feels that way, but you can't change his personal views. People should however make a bigger deal out of things like this he says. As the President, he should not allow his personal views to interferre with how he runs the country.

But didn't he make that statement when he was still gov'nuh of Texas? Oh well. My statement gets edited:
People in any government postitions, not just the President, should be hounded with media coverage for saying something like that, since they shouldn't let prejudices get in the way of running the country.
There. whee

I think Bush should be impeached. It is the presidents job to uphold the constitution. He has instead used his power to remove constitutional protections repeatedly. His treatment of differing religions is just another example, to add to the pile of transgressions.

He seriously doesn't consider Wicca to be a religion? I wonder what he thinks about Druidry...(my religion). He probably doesn't even know it exists rolleyes . What exactly does he think defines a religion anyway? Does it have to have a holy text of some sort? Dogma? 'cause my karma ran over my dogma a long time ago... And where exactly is the line between religion and personal belief? Do you have to go to church to be christian? Does your religion have to be organized or can you practice on your own? Just some questions...

I don't think that's very fair of George, but than he is an idiot, no offense to anyone who likes him. He shouldn't say things like that because he never knows who might be what, and there is no perfect religion, so anyone has the right to whatever religion they choose to follow.

I would be happy to sign the petition if it were not a concern of religion. I try to avoid matters of religion, as a usually end up getting yelled at for screwing up and saying something wrong, and I don't know enough about most religions to form an opinion. But I do recognize that what Bush said was unethical. I wish you the best of luck in getting accomplishing your goals.

xBloodyxValentinex Okay, discussion - do you think the President should be allowed to make any sort of religious statement to a country this diverse? First off, please excuse my swearing but I lack a word to describe what I'm feeling. Bush is a complete a** for saying what he did. There is such a thing as separation of church and state and honestly, i don't see much of that separation in our own presidency! Who cares if you worship multiple gods? Who cares if you relate more to paganistic beliefs? That isn't an excuse for something to not be called a religion. As long as there's some form of organization in the "religion", it should be considered a religion. And if Bush bothered to get his head out of his flipping a**, he'd see that even Wiccans (and other religions along those lines) strive to get to a higher plane of existance (i.e. heaven but i don't know what they call it). He is just asking to be hated more because he didn't understand the lovely little thing called separation of church and state.

Yea.. I've been a wiccan for two years, now. I don't know about Bush. I just am waiting for the next election when the democrats take back the office. (They will. No matter what God(s) you beleive in, I don't think any of them are THAT cruel.)

in my oppinion, a man who has claimed to be christian, but follows verry few of the commandments, and a man who claims to want better military, but it is obvios our military is fine, and our schools are not....he has no place to make a religos statement of any kind to the melting pot of the world...if i choose to be wiccan, or if i want to be a buhdist, its not his place to tell me that my choice is not a religion............my oppinon anyway....
