dboyzero People *should* give up their cars for more environmentally friendly transportation, but that's a different topic. In this case, it's more about a variety of reasons for giving up meat, including but not limited to: -A healthier lifestyle -More humane treatment of animals -Environmental health Whereas the arguments against giving up meat seem to be (as far as I've seen in this thread): -Liking the taste for meat -Natural diet You obviously did not read my post then, or misunderstood it. We do not need to give up cars, all we need to do is convert to electric cars, which are clean and green (as we say in NZ) The technology is there which would enable the majority of cars to be electric, and those that are not electric to be hybrid. If we did this everyone would win (except the oil industry) I have a similar arguement with meat consumption. I see nothing wrong in the consumption of meat (though I do believe we now eat too much of it which is what is causing the high rate of heart disease). However animal cruelty is WRONG and no matter how much people believe they should be allowed to eat meat, animals should not be treated cruelly. I support everyone who wants to go vegetarian, but it is not the only way to stop animal cruelty. You can still eat meat and do your bit to stop animal cruelty (such as I do). When buying your meat and eggs make sure that what you are buying comes from places where the animals are treated fairly. Buy freerange eggs, chicken and pork (chickens and pigs being the main two animals which are treated cruelly). They may cost more, but if more people demand free range products (instead of the cheapest product) then it will be more profitable for companies to become free range, so more and more farms will become free range, until eventually it is the norm for a place to be free range. Sign petitions etc. that demand your government to put in legislation that will stop the cruel treatment of animals. Give money to lobby groups against animal cruelty ((dress up in a bunny costume to help them raise money... I did it)) I have the utmost respect for people who do become vegetarian (and it is possible to have a healthy diet without meat. You just have to eat lots of nuts, chickpeas and eat a large range of fruit and vegetables. If you know your stuff you don't have to take dietary supplements anymore then a person eating meat has too). For those who can't imagine life without meat, you can still help stop animal cruelty.

You can be healthy when eating meat or when not eating meat. You just have to be educated on the subject.
As for animal cruelty, I don't stand for it either. Just because we're 'in charge' of animals so to speak, gives us no reason to treat them badly.

dewdew: I didn't mean that we need to give up cars, it was merely a way to illustrate one alternative. My post was a summative one, briefly stating the general arguments for both sides.

There's a good energy thread and global warming thread further down.

On the contrary, I'm very familiar with the rest of your post. It was well-thought and well-put. I had (excuse me for liking puns) no beef with your statements, so I had no need to argue against them.
