Still angry as he erupted back from Between and kicked the cracked thread from his back leg, the small brown took a deep breath and shot flame everywhere, killing thread all around them in a fury. There was no way that he would give in now, no way that he would stop when at least two of his family were unconscious or worse, when so many had fallen.
He was going to keep pushing through, his rider was going to keep pushing through and together they stood at least a marginal chance of helping their wing keep any Thread from falling below.

With an expert eye the brown noticed a clump of thread coming straight for them and shot a flame towards it, only to have it end coughing just short. With a deep beat of his wings they sailed over it and D'ast threw a chunk of firestone up.
"It's okay! They'll catch it below, they have to. Just keep fighting!" he yelled up to his dragon as the two charged towards another sheet.

As Illa directed her wingmates in the fight, thread came for her and Fenrith, blown on treacherous winds. The pair darted between, thread missing them by mere inches! Now that was more like it. Menankith, my son-in-hearts, fight well! You have lasted nearly the full Fall. You will do the Weyr proud this day.
Flying at low altitude was much easier, not that A'ye would ever admit it for fear of somehow finding himself victim of overconfidence. Oyath rumbled much the same as she blasted more Thread from the sky, her aiming skills improving. She seemed fairly content with herself, much more than she had been moments before, and A'ye....grew suspicious.
What's so good, Oyath? The question was more of an accusation, for her knew that feeling of mirth from her. It only came when she did something devious, likely without Aye's knowledge, and happily expected to get away with it.
..... Her reply was rather a sheepish nothing, and A'ye softly kicked at her to get her to focus. They may have been flying Thread, but she'd done something and he needed to know. I....may have told the Bronze that you were hurt, and didn't really specify how badly or where.

Maybe Menankith had pulled one too many fancy moves. Maybe it was getting charred that had done it, or maybe some sliver of Thread had hit them in exactly the wrong spot. Maybe, in trying to make sure they sat just so over his healing scores, they just hadn't been on right from the start. Or maybe it was her. Maybe she'd made them wrong in the first place. Whatever the reason, Nadry felt something in their straps give and tear, and her heart sank. They were so close; they'd had some rough spots, but they'd managed! They'd even earned a hint of approval from Aviroth. That was surely about to evaporate the moment they informed him.
And, worse still, Illa and Fenrith had been proud of them. A full Fall. If only! They expected them to do the Weyr proud, but how could they with broken straps? If they returned for their spare set, would they be able to make it back in time? But as much as they both longed to ignore it and fight on, they knew they couldn't...they would only be in exponentially more trouble in the end.
Menankith's touch against his beloved mentor's mind was filled with guilt, laced in rare shame. I...we have broken our straps, Fenrith. We will go back and try to be fast, but...
But would it be fast enough? He tamped down as best he could on all those doubts before he reached to Aviroth, with whom he was more matter-of-fact. Our straps have broken.
