'Okay....Wasn't quite expecting that.' Joshua blinked in surprise, then smiled. "Your welcome." He told her, just as simply. 'Wonder why she's so thankful? Oddly enough, that makes me want to know more. Won't ask though. Not after what she just said. Obviously she really doesn't want to say.' Shrugging, he followed Katalina's eyes as she looked back. "Looks like they're back from wherever." He pointed out the obvious. Raising one hand, he called out a greeting to Joey and Aoife.

Joey nodded and waved back. "Hey, maybe they can help. Come on!" He grabbed Aoife's hand and pulled her along. He stopped next to Joshua and Katalina. Obviously something important had taken place. Maybe it was a good thing that what he was about to say would take their minds off of whatever it was that was so important. "Hey guys, didn't see you arrive. Erm, we may have slight...erm...difficulties." He explained the whole deal about Violet and what he planned on doing so he could talk to her.

Katalina chuckled slightly at first, but quickly grew serious as Joey explained the issue with Violet. "That is absolutely ridiculous, Joey," she said quietly. "If she feels that humans are all evil...I hate to say it, but it might almost be better to let her think that than to risk your life just to talk with her. I've heard of her, distantly. She's dangerous."
She shook her head. "If you really want someone to talk her out of it, why not send Aoife or myself? She's less likely to attack us on sheer principle - which means she's more likely to listen to what we would have to say. But honestly--" She hesitated, then continued sadly, "It might be safer for her to believe what she does now. With the world the way it is..." She trailed off, but the implication was clear. With humans hunting for us now, we can't be too careful.

Joshua shook his head sadly. "I'm sorry to say this, but I Katalina may be right." He held up his hands to forestall any questions or protests. "Think about it Joey: If we convince her that not all humans are out to kill her, what will she do when she leaves here and finds more humans. If she tries to befriend them they might kill her or worse. She could be taken for scientists. Then what?" He shrugged. "We would be the reason she was in that situation." Joshua sighed and wrapped his his little lecture. "I think she might be safer if we leave her alone."

Joey sighed and lowered his head. He knew that they were right, yet..."That's a lonely existence..." His voice was quiet, almost too quiet to be heard. "I don't know about you guys, and maybe I am going to sound a bit naive, but...for those years when I was alone, I was scared and, most importantly, sad. Almost to the point of no return..." He shook his head and his shoulders seemed to fall. He looked older than he was at this point. "If you say we shouldn't, we won't." He spoke quietly, his previous energy gone.

Joshua reached out and put a hand on Joey's shoulder. "I know it sounds heartless, but for it's her safety. Besides, she's shown that she doesn't want to be near us." He looked out to the calm sea. 'You know something? Now that I think about it, I was never actually very lonely on my own. I enjoyed the peace and quiet as I never liked the hustle and bustle of life. I guess not everyone is suited to living on their own.'

"It's tempting to try to save everyone, Joey," Katalina said gently, "but sometimes you just can't. Sometimes you shouldn't even try. Besides, she only said she hates humans, didn't she? That leaves all the sea creatures of the world. Other mermaid clans would take her in if she asks. She doesn't have to be alone just because she's afraid of people."
She felt sorry for him. He really seemed to want to help this mermaid - but it probably wouldn't be help, with the world in its current state.
"The best thing you can do for her is let her be," she said quietly. "Don't you think so, Aoife?"

Joey sighed remorsefully. He rubbed his temples. "I need to clear my head..." He walked past Joshua and onto the beach. He walked off, still rubbing his temples, eyes half-closed. No, they didn't understand it. Violet didn't hate for the pure sake of it. She hated because she had a reason to. Like a person who was bit by a vicious dog sometimes ends up hating dogs. But, not only hating, fearing. Joey knew how that felt.

Joshua watched Joey walk away. "I wish I could do something. For both of them." He murmured to himself. "The world just isn't a nice place anymore, if it ever was." He sighed, lost in his own thoughts. 'Katalina's right. It is tempting to save everyone. But not everyone can be saved. Nor do some of them wish to be saved.'

Katalina shook her head. "It might not just be hate," she said quietly. "I know there are mermaids who fear people because they've been hurt. I wish there was a way to help her without putting her in danger, but I really don't think there is." Looking sadly out on the water, she said, "I learned to fear people, but you and Joey taught me otherwise. I'm old enough to know that not all humans will be like you, but maybe she's not."
Whether it's hatred or fear, she thought, if it keeps the mermaid safe, it's not something that should be entirely taken away. At the least, she needs to have a healthy respect for humans. They aren't always safe.
She looked after Joey, and felt sorry for both him and - Violet, he'd said? - but not enough to change her mind. If anyone had to talk to Violet, it ought to be Aoife or her. She didn't want Joshua or Joey risked, and she didn't know if they'd be able to properly spell out the danger that most humans posed while still convincing Violet that not all people were inherently evil.

Joey sat on a rock that jutted out of the ocean. It was relatively far out, so he didn't have to worry about anyone bothering him. It had been both tough and dangerous to get out there, but he didn't care. It was work, something to rearrange his thoughts. Something to calm him down while making his heart race. He stared out at the sea, the spray from the waves hitting his face. His face held a distant look to it, as though his mind were out in the waves. He was one person, one human out of billions. What could he do anyways? He didn't even have any real experiences in the world to be anything better. He looked at the sky. A seagull was riding the wind. It called out before returning to the shore.

Joshua glanced at Katalina. "And that's what makes this all the sadder. All this pain and suffering, of everyone, of all ages, with humans at it's source." Shaking his head, he looked out to sea. "I just don't see how to help without hindering. If we convince Violet not everyone is bad, then she could get herself killed because of us......" His voice trailed off. Joshua didn't like the thought of death. 'Especially of one of these amazing beings. The sea is full of wonders if we can just bother to look for them.' He thought of Kra and the griffins. Both were hidden right in plain sight.

((OOC: ...I want drama. *starts plotting* By the way, where is Violet?))
Katalina nodded. "Not all of them," she offered. It was all the comfort she had. "Some of them want to help us. Like you." Then she sighed. "But you're right. It's hard to tell her in one breath that not all humans are out to get her and then immediately contradict yourself by saying that she would always have to be careful."
"We don't all suffer," she told him finally. "I know that most of us are happy with the lives we lead, even though we have to be a little more wary. But I think this whole thing with Violet is something Joey will have to understand on his own."

((I don't know.....I think she died like most of everyone else. Hmm. Random idea just popped into my head. Big huge threatening storm? The kind that trashes land and sea alike, even some of the deeper waters?))
Joshua inclined his head towards Katalina, listening to her. He flash her a small smile. "Thank you. It's nice to remember that not everyone is out to cause misery and sorrow." He looked up, watching the pale clouds gathering. "Nice.....That's something missing in a lot of places. Then other places have an over abundance."

((OOC: That might be cool. I've also got a few other things in mind to spice this thing up a bit.))
Katalina gave him a little grin. "As long as we're talking about niceness...want to go visit with Kra?" she inquired. "I had a couple things I wanted to talk to him about that I forgot on the last visit. Also, he happened to mention to me on our way out that he thinks the eggs will be hatching soon."
