The wind was nothing to a dragon like Hrimnith who pushed against it fiercely - his stubbornness wasn't always a bad trait, after all, and frankly, Karinne preferred this to being blown away again.

Wheeling, flaming, catching thermals, fighting wind.... Threadfall is nothing if not exhausting. Greens, and blues find themselves panting with exhaustion. This is more tiring than they thought. Trying to come up from a dive, they struggle on wing and wind up getting blown right into some thread. Ouch! [+1 Stamina, Moderate Damage -4 HP ]

On the tail end of such a struggle against the wind, Karinne would have rather liked to let Hrimnith rest his shoulders for a moment, knowing there was a very slim chance of that. The calm was only for a moment, however, and the wind knocked them away.

They had a little time to assess the damage from being blown about as Hrimnith chewed on another mouthful of firestone. It looks better than it felt. I think we're alright, Karinne assured as her lifemate snorted. Takes more than the wind to take us down, Karinne.

Quote:
The wind is getting pretty bad. You struggle through, but wind up having to be extra alert for the windblown Thread! This is not a good situation to be in! [Greens, and blues wind up easily avoiding the blown Thread, their smaller sizes a great advantage. [+3 Agility!] [Browns and bronzes aren't quite as lucky. They maneuver as they can, but still wind up scored. Minor Damage -2 HP

If they thought the wind would be better for this portion of Fall, both Huarangith and R'bin were mistaken. It was still gusting at the middle altitude, and while everyone settled into their new altitudes some Thread was getting through the topmost defenders to blow into everyone's paths, including that of R'bin and Huarangith.

Can you dodge it? R'bin asked, eyeing a particularly long strand of silver blowing in their direction.

Huarangith followed his rider's mental gaze and although he privately felt his odds were not good - he had never been a particularly lithe or limber dragon - he was also certain that he could not catch the single Thread with his flame without also scorching one of his wingmates.

I'll try, he replied. Hold on.

Unfortunately, his acrobatics were for naught. The Thread blew directly into him, coiling briefly around the base of his tail before being blown on. Again, the brown fled between, warning the pair on his other side in what he hoped was enough time to spare them the same Thread's burning.

Are you all right? R'bin asked Huarangith as they found their way back into formation.

Huarangith considered the question. He knew R'bin was aware of his pain through their bond, and so he was aware that he wasn't really being asked about his physical well-being. He was being asked whether he felt he could go on, or whether they should drop down to see a healer.

I can go on, he answered. It would be excellent if the wind would die down, though. Fighting it and Thread seems excessive.

R'bin agreed. He could feel a sympathetic echo of Huarangith's pain in his own side, and he worried, but the brown was large and strong, and he was born to fight Thread. There was little likelihood he would willingly land in the middle of Fall for anything less than grave injury to himself or his rider. R'bin respected that, but he continued to ask.

Hour 2, Round 1, Roll 3
Quote:
You notice one of your wingriders is in need! Three clumps of thread are heading straight for them, while they are flaming down another impressive sheet. Ah, but your dragon is clever, and quick, and manages to flame all three down with short spits of fire. If a green, or blue rider, the thread turns to harmless ash, and both of you can continue on your way. [+3 Target Accuracy] If a brown, or bronze, you can't quite get over there in time. You call out to warn them, and manage to at least catch one clump while your wingmates blink Between. [+1 Target Accuracy]

Spotting a triple wave of Thread heading for their wingmates positioned sixty degrees out and twenty degrees below them, R'bin cried, "'Ware below!"

Huarangith echoed his rider's warning, just in case R'bin's voice was lost in the wind, and surged ahead, angling his head downward to cough a gout of flame at the clump nearest the endangered pair. He huffed in satisfaction as the entire clump puffed into ash and the dragon darted between to avoid the other two clumps.

Good shot, R'bin congratulated him. More firestone?

Thank you. Yes.

Huarangith turned his head, trusting to R'bin to act as his eyes while he hastily chewed and swallowed more of the softish stone which allowed him to flame Thread.

Hour 2, Round 1, Roll 4
Quote:
The greens, and blues don't seem to be having trouble sweeping up thread. Yeehaw! This isn't so bad! [+3 Agility] Browns and bronzes, you're struggling just a bit more getting around all the blowing clumps and individual strands. Still, it's good practice! [+1 Agility]

Huarangith and his rider continued to hold their place in formation, but it took effort. The way the wind blew the Thread, the pair were constantly having to perform aerial acrobatics to avoid further scoring, or simply dart between when Huarangith determined his mass was simply too great to evade a particular threat. It was exhilarating for both of them, despite the nagging pain all along the dragon's left side and the bitter cold seeping beneath R'bin's furs from the wind and the frequent jumps between.

How are you holding up? Huarangith asked when they experienced a brief lull in the action.

Freezing my balls off, R'bin replied. What can you do?

This is one of the many reasons I'm glad I was a dragon. My reproductive organs cannot be frozen off.

Congratulations. I'll be sure to apply for a change of species as soon as the opportunity arises, R'bin grumbled not unkindly. He was glad that Huarangith was in good enough shape to keep up a conversation and even joke.

Hour 2, Round 1, Roll 5
Quote:
You appear from Between and find the space you were hoping would be clear now has a large sheet of Thread being gusted towards it. You've only a moment to decide where to go, and both you and your dragon pick a spot and hop Between in an attempt to avoid Thread. Roll a D4 and take whatever damage or XP you're given!
3: You're fully clear of the danger! Phew! That was close! +1 Extra Between Accuracy

Huarangith! Huarangith! R'bin shouted. He shouted aloud, too, but his thoughts were faster. Either way, his voice was laced with panic. There was absolutely no way that his large brown could dodge the sheet of Thread.

Yes, Huarangith agreed. There was stress in his mental voice, too, as he performed his own calculations and reached the same conclusion as his rider.

Simultaneously dragon and rider picked a spot which should place them back in formation, but on the other side of the Thread sheet. If they had correctly estimated its actual width, and if the wind didn't change direction again while they were between. Otherwise they would emerge in the middle of the wave, or with it blowing toward them from behind. Their wingmates would not be able to save them from that volume of Thread.

It was with palpable relief that they emerged safely in their intended destination, having cleared the Thread and not gotten too badly out of alignment with the rest of the wing. Huarangith wheeled in the air and spat flame at their erstwhile threat, charring a swath several meters across as he turned his head.

A grunt issued from him but nothing much more, he could still flame and fight after all.
