Katalina arrived at the cove a little flushed and a little breathless, but mostly all right. Time was that she would have been able to go that distance at that speed without so much as feeling it, she thought ruefully. Not the point, of course. Nezik was the point.
"Nezik?" she called through the water as she approached the coral where she normally lived. "Nezik?" Surfacing briefly, she shook her hair back and then spotted Joey. With a breath of relief, she sped towards him. Stopping just before she would have run into him, she said, "Joey! Joey, have you seen..." She trailed off, realizing that Joey had never met Nezik. "Have you seen any other merfolk around here?" she asked, hoping against hope that he would say yes, actually, he just left.
But she knew already that he wouldn't. It just wasn't in Nezik's nature to leave a human behind if they showed themselves interested in - or even just resigned to - answering his questions, no matter how sharply the questions were answered - and Joey would probably have been quite patient.
Her brother had either never come here, or had come and gone.

Joey sighed in relief when he saw that it was Katalina. But, where was Joshua? The feeling of relief was quickly washed away when he saw the look on Katalina's face. "No, I haven't." He gave her a questioning look. "What of Joshua? What is going...never mind, questions will be asked later. You look to be in a hurry, go. I will wait on the shore." He turned and began to swim back, wincing a bit from the scratch on his leg.

"My brother is missing," said Katalina briefly. "If you see him here, Joey, please, try to stop him." That said, she turned and plunged back into the deeper ocean, towards the coral. It was possible that Nezik had taken her words to heart and had hidden when he saw an unknown human.
Possible, but unlikely.
Still, she searched the coral thoroughly before turning back towards the wider ocean. She had to go back. Perhaps he had just been sidetracked.
With that hopeful thought, she began to swim towards the caverns that housed her clan.

Violet got bored watching her reflection ad dove back in the water with a splash and she continued to swim down towards the coral....

His breath caught, Joshua glanced at the sun to determine the direction he needed to go. He turned slightly, then set off, hoping he was heading home. Before too long though, began to recognize the waters around him. 'Oh good. I made it! From here, there's almost no way I could get lost. These are my waters now.' He grinned and continued on, heading for a small break in the coral. From this direction, it was the easiest place to go in or out of the cove. There were a couple other breaks like this spread around the reef.

Katalina had gone almost three-quarters of the way to her home caverns before she paused. She turned her head and a smile found its way briefly to her face. "Narcis," she greeted. "We seem to be running into each other far too much lately."
The Siren nodded. "I was coming in to speak to the patriarch. Two searchers aren't going to be enough," he said quietly. "If he wasn't at your cove, and I assume he wasn't since you're here, he could be anywhere."
Katalina shook her head. "I don't know what to do," she said softly. "I can't offer help to the clan in finding him. I can't show my face again there for a while, or else they'll get stuck on that idiotic idea again, but I can't leave Nezik to roam the oceans alone. He doesn't know what the hell he's doing."
Narcis put a hand on her arm. "No one's suggesting you leave him out there," he replied, just as softly. "Why should you have to offer the clan your help? Do it yourself. They don't even have to know that you're looking. As to that plan of your father's..." He trailed off, looking rather sad for a minute or two. "Don't worry about it," he repeated. "I won't make you do anything you don't want to. Now. I need to go in and ask for more searchers. I'll let you know if anything turns up."
She watched him vanish in the direction of the caverns. Only when she was positive he couldn't hear did she mutter, "But would you agree to it if you thought I did want to?" Turning away from that idea, she thought, Nezik is left-handed.
If he'd wanted adventure, it was possible that he'd simply chosen a random direction. And random directions were often dictated by the dominant hand. So. She would go left and hope that she found him.

((OOC: Hey, Aoife. What's the last thing you remember? We'll catch you up.))
Katalina soon found herself back in her own waters, all places she recognized. How had she misled herself so badly? she wondered. She must have known that left would only lead her back home, yet she'd denied it to herself so that she could maybe believe that she would find him.
About to turn around, she saw Joshua. With a relieved smile - her haste hadn't gotten him lost after all - she went towards him. "Did you--?" she began. Then she spotted Violet and stopped abruptly.

Joshua glance up at the sound of a voice. At the sight of the mermaid, he stopped swimming. "Actually, I was heading back to shore." He pointed towards the beach. He looked her over, noting the purple scales. "You're Violet, aren't you?" He asked her with a smile. Though he was trying to be nice, he was still wary. The teen hadn't forgotten that she had tried to drown Joey.
He twisted around, hearing a familiar voice. "Hey Katalina." He greeted her with a wave. "No luck, eh?" He could by looking at the mermaid that she hadn't found Nezik yet.

Katalina shook her head. "Nothing," she replied dully. "Not so much as a hint of him. Narcis says he's looked in most of the usual haunts for little runaways, but..." A cold thought struck her all of a sudden and she went quiet.
That boat.
That boat that had nearly run Joshua over when they'd been leaving the caverns. Was it possible that Nezik had been gone longer than her mother had thought? Had he followed that boat out?
And if he had...
Had they caught him?

Joshua frowned. "He has to be somewhere." He heard Katalina's sudden quietness and looked at her worriedly. "Katalina? What's wrong?" 'She's thought of something. And whatever it is, it isn't a nice thought.' He frowned, trying to think of what she had come up with. "Katalina? What're you thinking?"

Joey felt useless. He floated in the water, watching Joshua and Katalina from afar. He wanted to help, but what could he do? He didn't know what was going on, nor did he know who they were looking for. And then he saw Violet. He wanted to swim out to them...he shook his head and remained where he was.

Joshua glanced back at Violet. He'd almost forgotten about her. "Joey told me your name." He told her absently. His mind quickly returned to the problem at hand. Right now, a rouge mermaid with issues against humans was not what he was concerned about. He was more concerned for Nezik, the merman who was all too likely to get tangled up with humans.
