Joshua answered without looking at the other mermaid. "Yeah. Human you almost drowned earlier today. Saved by a sea fairy named Aoife."

Katalina shook her head slowly, very pale. She had thought through her idea a little longer. She didn't want to believe it.

"You remember that boat, Joshua?" she asked softly, too focused on the matter at hand to answer Violet. "That boat that almost ran you over?"
It had been a big boat, she thought. A fishing boat. The kind with nets that merfolk often got tangled up in, particularly young ones who didn't know enough to avoid them.

"Mother doesn't really know how long he's been gone," she said, quietly, savagely. "No one ever really bothers to watch him. He could have followed that boat out."

Joshua's eyes widened as comprehension dawned on him. "Oh no." He murmured softly. Then he did something unusual for him. He broke out into a string of colorful curses. "This is not good. That was a fishing boat wasn't it?" He hadn't gotten the best look at the ship, but he did get a general idea. He growled another curse.

(( Last thing I remember was Aoife and Joey deciding that they were basically going to use Joey as bait to lure Violet near shore by tying him on a rope for Aoife to pull him back. ))

((OOC: Katalina and Joshua talked Joey out of it. Then the kraken eggs hatched, and Katalina's brother went missing - that's now what they're dealing with.))

Katalina nodded. "It was. It had nets," she said softly. "Nezik wouldn't know enough to avoid them, Joshua. He doesn't know anything about the world outside." She felt lost, terrified for her young brother's safety. "If Narcis knows where I live, Nezik would. When he left, I'm sure he would have come to me first, and he didn't."

If that boat had caught him, even accidentally, she highly doubted that anything good would come of it. "Joshua...if you were an ordinary human, the kind that would probably be on that boat, and you found one of the merfolk in your fishing net, what would you do with them?" she asked. She didn't want to know. She had to know.

If her brother had been trapped in that fishing boat, she'd have to get Narcis. Somehow, they had to get the boy back.

Joshua sighed. "If I were on that boat, I would be calling every research center, every aquarium, and most definitely every news thing I could think of. Catching a merfolk would be the find of the century. Especially, if it was still alive." He sighed. 'But I wouldn't be able to guarantee how long he stayed alive.' He looked towards the shore. "Those fishermen, if they did indeed catch Nezik, are about to become very rich and very famous." The teen's eyes hardened. They were going to get Nezik back. They had to. Joshua wasn't about to let humans hurt the friendly merman.

Katalina's shudder would not be lost on anyone watching her. "He might not have been," she said softly, pleadingly, as though asking Joshua to reassure her, to tell her that her brother wasn't there. "But...if they caught him, and they call all those places - Joshua, how can I get him back? I can't even get out of the water."

Then the real problem occurred to her. "Will he be all right?" she asked softly. "Will - they wouldn't hurt him, would they? Not if he was such a special find? They would treat him well?" If they hurt her brother...

She shook her head violently. "I...Narcis is old enough to have a human form," she said, forcing away the thoughts that had come to her. "If they have him on land already, Narcis could find him. I think." I hope.

Joshua's eyes softened, watching Katalina fret. "To get him back, I'm afraid we'll have to go on shore. So we'll probably need Narcis then." As much as the siren freaked him out, he would deal with it. Getting Nezik back would be more important.

"As for Nezik's safety....." He trailed off, not really wanting to worry her. Finally, he sighed deciding that not knowing would worry her more. "It depends on what the fisherman did. They probably sold to the highest bidder. If an aquarium got hold of him, he's fine. They would want to risk damaging something that would bring them so much money. If it was a research center that bid the highest, it would depend. Some would want him alive others want him dead."

He shook his head to clear it of the thoughts. 'Scientists like that are irritating! They were one of the reasons I left.' "We need Narcis and we need to go. Now." Time was the main thing here. They needed as much as they could get.

Violet had no clue what the human was talking aout with the other mermaid.....
but she did hear the parts about the boat... and the nets.....
memories flashed before her eyes from her own incident with a fishing boat....
she was curious, and naieve... she swam too close and got tangled in the net... she tried so hard to break free but there apeared no way out and she couldn't tell where she was....
then there was a sharp pain as she was pulled up to the rudder and sliced her fins....
Violet cringed at the memories, they were so strong.... she will never forget that, and that is why she never dares to trust a human. their all the same, heartless.....

Katalina went dead white when Joshua said that some researchers might want Nezik dead. "Why?" she whispered. "Why?" Then she shook her head viciously. He was right. Time was more important. They could discuss the whys later. "I...I'll call Narcis. He'll come," she said softly. "He's--"

"Already here," a voice interrupted. Katalina whirled. Narcis was watching her inscrutably. She hadn't even heard him come up from behind. "You called me," he reminded her patiently. "I heard, and I came. What have you found out?"

"We think...Joshua and I...that he was caught by a fisherman," she told him. "Joshua says they might have sent him away. I - I can't go on shore. Can you--?"

Narcis's gaze shifted past her to Joshua briefly. He seemed far less predatory now than he had in the Siren's cave. Perhaps worry had softened him. "I'll go, Kit," he said softly, returning his eyes to Katalina. "I - and I suppose your human, too, if he wants to come - we'll get him back. Don't fret."

Joshua didn't like the color Katalina turned. He shook his head. He would explain weird scientists later. Now it was more important to go stop the scientists or whatever. "I'm coming." There was nothing that was going to stop him from going. He felt partly responsible for this mess. So, he would help right it. Besides, he knew his way around the human world. He didn't know how much experience Narcis had. Though, he was glad to see how much less predatory the siren looked. The teen decided that Narcis had probably been doing it on purpose before, to scare him.

Narcis nodded flatly. "All right," he said. "We'll go." He cupped Katalina's chin in one hand briefly. "You'll hold down the fort, cousin? Have a place for us to come to once we've gotten Nezik?" At her nod, he released her and turned to the beach. He gestured to the two of them to follow, and set off towards the cove with Katalina following close behind.

She had never seen Narcis in human form - she'd just assumed that he had one. Apparently she was right, but this was a curious novelty. It was just too bad that she was too afraid for her brother to really appreciate learning such an interesting little fact about the Siren.

Joshua turned and followed Narcis to the beach. He was midly curious as the the siren's human form. He decided that later he would have to inquire more about this strange thing. How it happened, for one thing. Still, now was not the time for questions. Now was the time for action. The longer they delayed, the more danger Nezik was in. The teen hadn't told Katalina that not all people played by the rules. Though one group may have gotten ahold of the young merman, others might try to steal or harm him.

Joey looked out at the water and saw three shapes coming in. Wait, three?! He turned and decided to wait on the beach, seeing as how that was their destination. He walked out of the water and sat on the sand, watching the three fast approaching shapes...Joshua, Katalina, and...someone else...He was quite curious as to who this newcomer was. He had, after all, never seen him before.
