Brenley

Bren watched the physical and mental fighting with a calculated impassivity that almost hid his nerves. His eyes remained wide even when he wasn't directly looking at the hatchlings in question, and when the Blue and Purple Paint green stalked past, he hopped out of the way as nimbly as he could, only catching a tail with his ankle. He looked like an idiot doing so, but at least he wasn't dead.

Korbet

Now there was the behavior he had come to expect. Korbet made a point of rolling his eyes dramatically skyward before he ducked his head and got back to his notes. Baby gold commands her parents to eat their riders. Not the tone he was going for, but maybe fodder for a comedy if he spun it the right way.

Kainna / Female / Western
Bronzes, blues, a brown, the golds, and so many lovely greens! Kainna couldn’t believe her eyes at how many babies were moving about, and with still so many eggs left to hatch! Still, it wasn’t the most chaotic Hatching she’d ever attended… yet, at least. Oh shards, here comes a ticked-off green! She was sure to stay as clear of the infant’s reach as she could get.

Vasadryx / Male / Western
So many eggs had hatched quietly in the shadow of the twin queens and their green rivals, but Vasadryx saw them all. He grinned at the set of tense babies when they had calmed somewhat, particularly when the blue gave up and went off to mope. The smile dimmed when the ladies began to hiss and spit at each other again, but he knew it was just the natural way of things, and usually turned out all right by the end of the Hatching. And oops—he had to step aside, sweeping a few smaller candidates along with him, to avoid Blue and Purple Paint as she, erm, “introduced herself” to the candidates.

Vitryx / Male / Western
Grimly, the blond watched as the already stressful situation escalated again. The continued use of control over the greens was… troubling. Vitryx had never seen babies use it against each other so early in life, but had to assume that this was nothing new and earth-shattering. He continued to send positive, welcoming thoughts toward all of the infants, reaching for Kainna’s hand when they regrouped after the angry green’s initial charge.

Lesta / Female / HR
The standoff between the greens and golds had gone on for several minutes before the brewing storm came to a head. Lesta had been admiring the many other babies who’d hatched, but her full attention returned to that quartet, especially the one green that full-on charged the Candidates. The other stalked more quietly, but would be no less dangerous if provoked. She hoped they were actively looking for their lifemates.

The Blue and Black Rosette Egg began to shake more frantically, especially as its green sisters seemed to turn among the crowd. Back and forth, back and forth, the being inside was desperate to get out!

- - -

Things were starting to get...well, crowded.

As Candidates began to hurriedly move out of the way of the upset green, a few Candidates stepped too close to the Nanner Egg as they attempted to avoid the onslaught of the green. Quite suddenly, the egg shattered and a coiled up, hissing brown dragon stood read-eyed, teeth bared. In an instant, he immediately snapped hard at those unsuspecting Candidates--ones who were so focused on the green they hardly knew what was coming.

One young man, Rykin immediately was grabbed, shaken hard, and thrown aside, where he fell to the sand.

In a flash, he bit hard at Midais and his arm, letting his fangs sink in as he gave a hard pull. Anger, aggression, and supreme annoyance rolled off this brown--whose egg had been so, well, quiet at the Touching.

Instead, the next closest Candidate was Huawar, and he shoved the other away, raking his wingclaw down the others side and shoving him away. Aelyx was given a bite and a shove, and finally Ruunan was given a hard tail whip.

As soon as he'd shoved the Candidates far back and away, the dragon recoiled, wings spread, teeth bared.

Back. Off. It spoke to all of them...and anyone else near. It didn't care who it hurt, or how badly. They were far too close!

During this assault, the Bone Egg finally cracked, and for any Candidates near it, one whirling red eye could be seen staring out at the world... and something inside was clearly growling. Unfortunately, the crack wasn't enough to split the egg, but it would only be a matter of time. Those near it would feel its ire rolling off the egg.... And its frustration and desperation within the egg only grew.

Nikal - 19, he/him

“Too late,” he echoed dully as the antagonized sisters began to stalk their way. Nikal couldn’t blame them exactly: where else did they get to vent their anger except that the temporarily acceptable targets? The world wasn’t fair to them or the humans that got to experience displaced frustration; at least the girls could release some of that.

When the Bone Egg shifted, however, he felt his heart jump a little in his throat. This was soon followed by inner cursing. But if anyone could cut to the bottom of this, it was probably the dragon curled inside if his interaction had meant anything. Either that, or it would have some cutting opinions about it all.

Instead, however, it was Nanner that broke free and inflicted the first real blood on candidates. Nikal froze in place from surprise, eyes darting between the growing potential of dangerous dragonets.

Karunia - 20, she/her

“Dunno! Sometimes they do, sometimes they wanna protect Theirs, sometimes they want someone completely opposite.” There really wasn’t any telling when it came to that practically magical something.

...Welp. Negotiations were failing, and now the candidates were given the sort of attention that would make a lesser man start to quail. Of course, Karunia was neither lesser nor a man! A captain needed to have a spine of steel after all. And she was confident if something was going to happen, she could defend herself or whoever they turned their ire on. At least, she’d try! And that was that.

Karunia took a deep breath and also squared her shoulders. “One step to the side, then. But steady the course, Toto,” she told him as she did so, feeling a little thrill of either nerves or adrenaline as the greens began to draw near. “We don’t mean harm. Can’t really tell the storm to stop anyway; all we can do’s prep and navigate what comes.”

Though she was ready to leap in heroically if need be! Or, well, uh...so the new brown didn’t want them near...Heroically stand there? For the first time since they hit the sands, Karunia’s buoyant exterior flickered with some worry at the newly injured.

“Let’s get them to a healer?” she suggested, already on the move to help the nearest.

Dhawsn - 29, he/him

As surreptitious as a moving boulder, he attempted to pull Serfie along with him in a direction away from the impending angry greens, his palms turning sweaty. Please no...He didn’t need to be getting scared this early into the Hatching, but Dhawsn couldn’t help it. And Brown Paw Print especially looked riled up...

His attempt to move them out them closer to a meaty looking girl he remembered from several other hatchings before, though Dhawsn couldn’t place a name at the moment. “Mind some company?” he asked by way of greeting, hoping his smile didn’t look nervous.

It absolutely was by the time the Nanner Egg joined the fray.

Candidate Jaiyce Western

"Vesden, nice to meetcha!" Jaiyce was bent on staying jovial and letting the queens have their fight on their own as he focused more on those approching the crowd. He once more focused himself on sending out calm reassuring thoughts.

But something wasn't right, he turned as he more felt than saw Vesden wince as the Green Sisters took to the crowd..... things were getting out of hand when all of a sudden the Nanner egg unleashed its fury. Jaiyce couldn't help but wince with Vesden on that one.

Then somewhat nearer to his left side he heard a crack and looked over to see the Bone egg had cracked.

Without thinking Jaiyce turnd his back towards Vesdens' shoulder, cheating his front towards the single glowing read eye that could be seen whirling......

"Ah Vesden, be a good fellow and take two scoots the the right please, I know its closer to the greens, but just please, do it!" Jaiyce fought to not make eye contact with bone egg, and to keep his thoughts as calm as possible near that forge of ire.

Candidate Huarwar : Western : He/Him

When the green had come into the crowd, attacking anyone that she could, Huarwar had taken Aelyx and drawn the both of them away. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to move but he wanted to move a bit more to the back and away from the danger.

Not a good idea...apparently...

The sound of an egg cracking and then hissing caused him to turn his head, seeing the coiled and red-eyed dragonet before it suddenly struck and attacked another candidate. The brown was radiating aggression as it went after another candidate and then...

A searing pain shot through Huarwar's shoulder as he felt a wingclaw dig into the flesh. He had been crouching down a bit more, preparing to grab Aelyx and move them away when the brown attacked. His own hiss escaped through gritted teeth as he was shoved away, feeling the claw tear through flesh. Already he could feel the warm blood seeping and dampening his robe.

Righting himself as best as he could and unable to stop the brown from attacking Aelyx, Huarwar once more took her hand gritting his teeth through the pain as he pulled the both of them away from the brown, heeding his words. There was not going to be any push back, not when this baby could kill either of them.

He was not going to let another dragonet take another person he loved from him. Not as long as he was still living.

"How bad did he get you?" He looked Aelyx over, taking in any of the damage from the bite, completely ignoring his own wound and the fact he was still bleeding. "Do you need to get off the sands and to a healer?"

Pyper - 16, she/her

So, nobody warned her that sometimes babies decided to hatch at weird times. Or maybe they had and she just hadn’t been paying attention. (Her hair alone took ages and needed an master artisan’s touch, you understand. It wasn’t the masterpiece she wanted for the Hatching, but there were still a few star clips in her afro.) Pyper had figured the queen could manipulate the when and where to and extent, or something something dragonets being more polite about their timing something something. She hadn’t expected to get her beauty sleep interrupted. Ugh!

The initial annoyance had eventually given way to awe once they reached the sands. It was hard not to get lost in the hubbub of excitement running through the assembled crowd there, and Pyper lived for that sort of thing even when it wasn’t focused on her. Maybe it would be today if a dragon chose her! Oh, there had to be someone who liked to sing and would like her, the perfect duet partner! She had said as much to Brenley throughout the touchings and again there on the early morning as they waited.

And now all the drama was spilling out, and she was eating that right up. Well, up until bodily harm started getting threatened. And acted on.

Pyper stopped abruptly talking and grabbed Brenley’s sleeve, blue eyes wide. She had participated in two other Hatchings before and had been taught about what could happen on the sands, but being there? Totally different. And a liiiiittle scary. Not that a giant nerd like Brenley would seem intimidating to a couple of angry babies, but.

“Yeah, uh. Let’s do that,” she said with stilted casualness after the brown made his demands, taking a few steps back just to be safe.

Kiri

Dragonet's were hatching every-which-way. The girl had kept herself quiet, looking between the shenanigan's with the queens and the green, and then the other dragonet's who were still circling the Candidates. Things had been tense as the queen's attempted to keep the green in place; while some seemed distressed at the dragonets sweating and swiping at one another, Kiri well understood that it was highly unlikely they would cause serious harm. If felines were anything to go by, testing boundaries was common, and usually a loser knew when to retreat...

But the Queen's weren't letting the drama play out. Not... Not really. The more they exerted their will on them, the more upset the greens appeared, and the more...well, the more tense things became. It was inevitable, and not entirely surprising to the Felinehandler, when the greens turned themselves upon the Candidates. For Faranth's sake.... One of them seemed to be searching for something, while another was on an all out assault.

She wasn't going to get in the way of the greens; she was going to stand out of the way and watch her back. That said, she wasn't going to let Aryale or Bukichi take the brunt of damage, either. No, she'd keep an eye on those near her, just in case. Unimpressed hatchlings did unexpected things.... As the Nanner Brown just proved.

She swallowed hard as she watched the creature shake a Candidate, reminded entirely of her brother. Faranth, please no... She almost wanted to run over to Rykin, but she remained still. The distance between them was too great, and someone else, she knew, would dive in immediately. But oh... Oh, she didn't trust that brown.

And there were still other babies on which to focus. "Watch your backs, too," she told her companions. It might have seemed silly advice, but Kiri wouldn't ever trust a dragonet behind her. No matter what feelings were welling up within her... She would conquer them.

Vesden | High Reaches | He/Him

"Yes. Right. Better to respect that one's space." Vesden didn't need to be told twice, he knew how bone got when it was crowded. He, unlike Jaiyce, gave the newly cracked egg an appraising once over, and as he moved away from it he sent some calming feelings of his own it's way; they were moving, they respected the dragon's space and knew it would defend itself if it had to, it was a strong little dragon and it had already proven as much at their first meeting.

A few scoots to the right and a few back as well just to be sure. After what had just happened with the greens and the brown, it seemed prudent not to further anger the one egg he'd actually expected to be a fighter. Vesden didn't want to be the next one mauled and he imagined Jaiyce didn't either.

Rykin

He had always been so stoic, so adept at hiding how he truly felt most of the time, that when he was very suddenly in brutal, searing pain, Rykin didn't make a sound. He was standing, carefully shuffling out of the way of the angry green, and then something struck him hard against his side. Once. Twice. Or maybe the second impact was the whiplash as his body was shaken back and forth like some rodent crushed between a feline's teeth. Whatever it was, he wasn't standing anymore.

Hours, minutes, seconds later, he felt a person or two rummaging around in his neck and chest. A thin sob finally pushed past his lips, right before everything went dark.

This hatching was quite a thing, indeed.

But the Brown Paw Print dragonet was not here to maul anyone. Her siblings were taking care of that perfectly well on their own. So, padding her way through the crowd, the dragonet peered up at the Stands. Drat. It wasn't going to be easy to make her way up.

... Taking one more step toward the Stands, she creeled, and paced back and forth in front. But... how? How was she going to get up to Hers? She knew that her rider was somewhere... somewhere up there. She certainly hadn't felt her person when the Candidates had touched her egg.

Aryale

One egg had hatched furious - was it the already rising tension from the eggs that had hatched before? Was this going to be a testier clutch in general? All she could do was remain calm and keep her wits about her. "Yeah," Aryale agreed, biting her lower lip as she looked at those reacting to the thrown, pushed, scratched, and shaken candidates far enough away to not really be a clear view.

She squeezed Bukichi's hand again, then let go.

For a moment, she found her attention lingering on that egg again. Would it be less kind upon hatching than it had been in the egg? While they'd not all been overtly friendly, none of them had seemed so......well, things changed. Aryale steadied her heart and refocused on the kind thoughts. All the eggs would find theirs, so many new riders would be walking off the sands with their lives changed forever. Their entire worlds would change forever.

Aryale reached out to take Kiri's hand to squeeze too - for support.

Matotoka

He moved with an alertness that wasn't exactly cautious. Attentive, certainly, looking between the prowling - and clawing and very unhappy - greens that had begun to purposely move amongst the candidates. It wasn't fearful to keep oneself in one piece, it was smart and kept unnecessary conflict down.

Then another egg - which one, that one? - hatched something very unhappy and ever so willing to show it. There was no time for heroics, no reason, no necessity to run to try and save anybody while teeth and claws were on the loose.

"As close as we can," Matotoka agreed firmly, making a point to not move quickly (you must never run from something and draw its attention) but still pointedly towards where Huarwar and Aelyx were gathering themselves up. "You're bleeding," he pointed out to Huarwar, "Are you both good to see the healers on your own or do you need a hand?"

Karunia had the right idea, at least.

Keris - High Reaches Weyr - Standidate - She/Her

Perhaps doomed to never sit back in her seat, Keris had leaned forward again to see a better vantage point, as it appeared the dragonets were having a bit of a stand off. More and more hatched -- lovely greens, blues, bronzes.. But her eyes were attracted to the handsome browns. Particularly the one from the Nanner egg, as her breath caught as he went on a rampage through the candidates. Even from the stands, she could see his body language, the way he needed.. space. Candidates shouldn’t be crowding, even if there were a lot of them. Hopefully with some breathing room, the little, fearsome brown would have less to tear into others around him.

But.. was that a green climbing into the stands..?

Nonami - Western Weyr - Candidate - They/Them

Phryana’s reassurance helped Nonami.. some. They still squeezed the older woman’s hand a bit thankfully, glad the point of contact wasn’t just.. ripped away. Certainly they needed to learn how to stand by themself, but.. Fear still ached in their heart. “I.. I really hope they do.”

Except, the hatching would start to break open. More eggs, more divisive stances on who they followed -- the green, or the gold. They were both right, and wrong, and was fighting doing anything to help…?

But the Brown Paw Print green was stalking into the candidates.. As the Blue and Purple Paint Green started to tear into the candidates, and joined by the incredibly angry Nanner brown. They tried to push their way infront of Phryana, wanting to shield the taller candidate, and can’t quite help the sob of pain as claws rake down their leg.

Enraged by everything that had happened, and not ready to give it up, Blue and Purple Paint egg went barreling through the Candidates, searching for someone... someone, anyone to take her ire out on!

With a roar, she charged Huarwar and Aelyx, claws out and sheering into their legs!! Take that! And that! And that!

But she wasn't done. She pounced on Papys, knocking him to the Sands, claws digging in deep as she hissed into his face. She. Wasn't. Done!

Jacquol—She/Her
Oh shards and a sinking deck! Things suddenly exploded even mkre, and blood hit the sands as both green and brown plowed into the throng. Jackie had always been nimble though, and she sprang aside as deft as ever, a sharp grin beneath her wary eyes. She was here to impress, not to lose a limb! Still, she couldn’t blame the poor things—clearly this all had gone wrong in some of their opinions, not quite to plan, and they were making do.

Taking their pound of flesh—not so bad so long as it wasn’t her pound of flesh!

Meztli—They/Them/He/Him
Oh gracious... they were starting to think this sort of hatching violence was typical! Blood and tearing, red eyes... Meztli took several wuick steps back from the fray, hands coming up instinctively to shield their face and sensitive bits. In a flash the semi-relaxed mood evaporated—maybe it was just the early hour, but they were starting to think this whole candidate thing wasn’t for them, just maybe...! Cakes were never this aggressive! “Okay, okay... you don’t have to do that, so maybe just... relax?”
