As thread fell around them, thick sheets of awaiting injury and death, Heimdath shuddered and snarled, her quiet form even surprising her rider as she spat a great flame, longer than either had thought she could do before.

Once more, thread tried valiantly to fall infront of them as the wind tried to send them tumbling into the clump. However, having learned from last time, Heimdath was quicker on the draw as Y’qua gave her the signal, and they disappeared without injury this time, appearing above so they might sear it safely.

Her muscles ached and burned, but they had only just joined the high altitude. All would be well. Heimdath wasn’t a green with more stamina, but she was determined to do her part, to wait until the second wave when her fellow greens, blues, and whites would take over.

The call came to change altitudes, and G'rey braced himself at Karhath began to ascend. Judging on how the previous hour had treated them - that they had already lost one among them and two had fallen from the skies... This Threadfall was not treating their wings well. And while he would by no means let that stop him from doing his duty, it instilled a healthy amount of fear in him for his dragon's safety. His own was less of a concern, although he knew His would likely chide him for it, but how could he do anything less than put the safety of his beloved dragon first?

G'rey. I would like to refresh my firestone, before we reach altitude.

Snapped out of his musing, G'rey reached into his bag almost by reflex and offered a handful to Karhath's turned head. Of course. Just be careful not to-

There was a pained yelp, and G'rey sighed. It seemed Karhath had learned little from his experience with the same mistake the previous hour. Or perhaps it was just that he was still distracted by the loss they'd suffered. Either way, he would be nursing a sore tongue for a while yet.

There! Orthoth struggled to fly into the headwind that had swept up and divided him and C'mric ffrom the Thread just out of their reach. Giving his rider a quick warning, the dragon flickered in and out of Between, planning to sneak up on the stuff and burn it to ash when they emerged.

But they overestimated, and the clump they intended to destroy fell past Orthoth's flank. C'mric watched in horror as it dropped then was flung toward Karhath and G'rey, sending them Between with a shriek.

C'mric and Orthoth's hearts plunged too. They owed him. They owed the pair a deep apology. And then would make it. As soon as Fall had ended...

The winds were picking up. They had already been bad in the first hour, but G'rey could tell that if it weren't for his riding leathers, his face and skin would be entirely numb from the biting cold and shrieking winds this high in the air. He could feel the way Karhath was straining against it, not quite of a size of many of his fellow browns. And then out of nowhere, a gust of wing threw them out of formation yet again.

Karhath fought as best he could, but fighting the wind was exhausting him already. It would have been fine - they could have recovered and gotten back into formation. But this high in the sky, there was precious little room for error. And this time, it was the glaring error of a wingmate that had cost them.

G'rey heard their wingmates trumpeting warning. He saw Orthoth blinking between and back out just above them. But what he did not see until it was far too late was the clump of thread that was perfectly poised to strike Karhath dead center on his back. The shriek from him tore at G'rey, and Karhath blinked between on pure instinct - for a terrifying moment, he feared they might not come out of it. But by some mercy, Karhath had not entirely lost his focus through the pain, and when they reappeared he turned to assess the damage, wincing at the extent of it.

And only then noticing the crumbling thread falling away from the back of his own riding leathers.

That was far too close a call.

[quoteA clump of Thread catches you on your leg. You quickly hop Between, easing the sting of the burn. It hurts, but you're going to fight through the pain. Healers can wait. +1 Pain Resilience

The thwap of Thread against C'mric's leg startled him out of dwelling on the mistake of overshooting Thread. Of letting a wingmate be injured because of his own shortcomings. With a breath sucked between his teeth, he and Orthoth blinked away and back. It served him right. It proved he was being foolish. What was he doing in the sky, anyway?

G'rey could tell just how deeply exhaustion was dragging on Karhath. The lingering pain of that last clump of Thread that had hit him was obvious in the way his movements dragged. He did not need to see his eyes to know that they were undoubtedly grey, with grief. With pain. But he didn't feel they were desperate enough to return to the Weyr just yet - they could push through just a bit longer. See out the end of their hour at this altitude and assess how they'd fared. Return to the Weyr then if necessary.

He saw the moment the clump of Thread fell, but again the wind worked against them. And with Karhath too tired to fight against it, their only option was between. But the same mistake that had befallen Orthoth only moments before was now theirs to make in Karhath's exhaustion.

He overshot. The Thread went flying past them to strike one of their wingmates instead. And Karhath was just so tired, he couldn't even muster the emotion to feel guilty for it. He'd made so many mistakes already this Threadfall. What was one more?

Uta
Looks like Eirana and Favaleth were in the wrong place at the wrong time! Up to you how extensive injuries are.

Between eased the pain of it and in reality it wasn't even as bad as the throbbing in his mouth, more an irritant.

A heavy gust of wind caught one of Bossuth's wings and wrenched it, hurling the pair far out of their formation and sent them spinning about. Though the bronze was able to flame as he went, avoiding any thread that might have chewed them to bits, he was annoyed with himself. Of course he was a small bronze, nearly as small as could be, but he still had a small amount of dignity and that gust of wind had taken it all from him. His eyes turned red and he popped back into his formation, R'iz feeling guilty and anxious about the wingleader's eyes on them.
