Jrock. It's where it's at.
It has a surprisingly mature fandom, too. Which I like a lot. Well...it can still depend. The fangirls do run rather rabid and often blindly follow looks instead of actual good music.
caliā gari once formed a fake band where they only had photos released of them all dressed up visual kei-like. Then the album actually came out and people bought it like crazy only to find out that the joke was on them.

Mmm, I see... the song has to be written very specifically to feel what the artist intended.
I think there's an appeal in lyrics you can't understand- in that case, you have to almost listen more carefully, a little harder, or atleast differently, to get the meaning. And if you don't get the vocal meaning, then there's many other things...
I guess that sometimes words are only words, is what I mean. ;P
They can only do so much.
@ Waku- Well... I did say surprisingly mature. ^^;. Fandom itself is a pretty condemning condition. I didn't say I was proud.
Visual-kei in itself kind of says what the genre is about... :/ It is a little sad.

Sounding unlike anything else is very appealing for me in music, so naturally music in other languages does wonders for me... 8D
Lyrics are important to me, but the music itself, and the singers voice and how they use it end up being a higher priority for me.
So much music in English all starts to sound the same to me after a while. So I stick to more "unique" ones. At least in my mind.

Well, of course, but even other things like inflections of voices and words, body language, and other things people use to show feeling differ from culture to culture. I know I should just enjoy music because of what I enjoy and what I take out of it, but I find that I can't truly appreciate songs without understanding the artist a little bit - even if the only understanding is the lexicon he (scholarly he) uses to communicate.
But I'm very picky, and a**l, and quite analytical, with music - even if I should just be listening for pleasure. Which makes me wonder why I'm searching for a particular artistic style at the moment...

If you want a band where you get to know the artist, I'd again recommend The Dresden Dolls. Amanda Palmer is brilliant, and a magician with words. :3
Everybody appreciates music on a personal and unique level, so it's okay if you enjoy it in some specific way. I'm not trying to punish you for it. ^^;
Hm... I'll try to think of others.

Heh... Well technically all artists can be known in some level or another thanks to the Internet. :3
I think it's just safe to say that I'm insane when choosing music I like.

XD.
Well, that's probably the best way to go through life. Hell, maybe the only way.
I hope you find something great to listen to. There's nothing quite like cracking open the discography of a whole new, beautiful band.

124-C *wonders if Komo's boyfriend is "plastic and elastic"* ninja Haa, more like non-existent. AMIRITE OH.
Coin-Operated boy isn't her strongest song, really... I'm trying to find a copy of the latest album to legally get my hands on, (I'd never steal from Amanda,) but they don't carry it in my local music store.
I don't really have a occasion to buy anything for myself, though, so...

Mm... I think that those two are good starting points to start with, Waku.
Alright! Question number two. You are a music student at a music school. There is an espresso bar in the commons where the employees choose what music to play as long as the boss is okay with it and it's not provoking/offensive (boss is okay with all except country and heavy metal, and, when boss is at work, would usually play eclectic/world mixes). What musics would you want to listen to? (This is for my coffee job starting the fall)
I was thinking of bringing in some Zen-ambient mixed with some Indian-traditional with a garnish of electronic breakbeat jazz.
