Music? We're talking about music? Well to insert my two cents, I have to agree with Waku. I'd rather have something upbeat being poured into my ears then something slow and pounding and depressing. I like it fast and hard. Lyrics can die in a fire as far as I'm concerned, they can be as sad or happy as they want if the music appeals to me. I however prefer something with a measure of comedy or satire inserted in the lyrics, such as the pleasant sounds of They Might be Giants. Lately I've been feeding my ears a lot of Ramones; they've been a staple of my listening habits since middle school. But as you all know, I'm also partial to the slightly softer noise that inhabits the genra of j-pop, in the neighborhood of the Hello! Project very specifically.
Why did I say all that now?

You felt compelled to contribute to the music conversation, Jimbo? ^_^ Oh! If you were going to a coffee shop (or some other place where you'd kick back, relax, and possibly socialize and eat/drink something light with friends and colleagues and generally-small groups), what music would you want in the background?
And also... I found a Counter-Strike CD in my CD case... *debates on installing*

I get really antsy when my mind isn't doing something active, though I'm usually okay with my body being still as long as the mind is doing something. I get uneasy when there is no work to do, nothing to think about, and things are either totally stagnant or going way too well...

Pretty good. :3 I got The World Ends With You yesterday, I'm really liking the game so far.
The battle sequences confuse the hell out of me, I end up spamming one combination of buttons for the upper screen and just paying attention to the lower. XD

Mmm.... now if I could sit still and calm down, then I'd be set for a good while.... But I worry. And the sad part is that it's probably about things I should really be worried about.
I think the sad thing about what makes good music good is it's weighted too much on social pressures nowadays. If I want to leave some good impression, I probably shouldn't leave it to my knowledge of bands. Hah.... XP
It's an art that needs education.. makes it sort of hard to feel as easily as other arts are. It's like a whole new language.

Just to be clear, "the rat cage", in this case, is not a term referring to your mind, right?

For background noise, I like the NPR Jazz station. Jazz is perfect for poking brains along I think, and NPR is one of th most tolerable stations on the radio.

I dunno... I don't think music requires education per-se to understand. Rather, it requires more of an understanding of one's personal cultural makeup to understand why certain music appeals to you.
Example in point: Hip Hop. Rehashes the bridge section of popular music, where MCs speak. Eventually that section becomes stylized, extended, and become pieces in themselves. Because of the relative cheapness of using already-made material and of recording equipment that is cheap enough to keep it repeating, a basis is made. The speaker can more-easily focus on the words that communicate what he (scholarly he) is saying to his audience. Easy making, easy communication, creates an easy and viable way for many people who cannot have access to the education of Dead-White-Man "Art" music or formal general education to have a voice and communicate their stories and feelings through a medium more touching than mere speaking, because it is art.
Everyone can musick regardless of education; it just requires the right type of functional and contextual lens. :3
Edit: Mm... Jazz seems to be popular from my real-life friends and colleagues, Jim. And night K0m0! And welcome back TVD.
