Joshua tilted his head to the side, listening as she dragged out the words. Doing the same, he tried once more to copy the sounds. He figured that once he got the hang of the actual sounds, he could bring the words up to speed. 'I don't think they sounded as bad as last time.' Then again, who was he to be a judge? He smiled at Katalina, switching back to English. "Hey, you're willing to teach. That's what matters. We can work around any bumps in the road. How did I do this time?" The last question was added on axiously. Joshua was hoping he hadn't insulted her again. He wanted to get this right.

Katalina was smiling a little - a pleased one this time, rather than just amused. "A little better," she told him. "I could work out what you meant to say this time. Do you want to try a basic sentence? It's a little tougher, because you need to add influences to your voice based on whether it's a question or a statement, but I think you could probably do it if you tried."
And he would try, there was no question about that. It was obvious that he wanted to learn - and it would certainly give him an edge if he decided he wanted to go on in his travels and meet other creatures, including clans that perhaps would not be able to speak to him in his own tongue.

Joshua beamed, glad that he hadn't insulted her this time. He nodded enthusiastically. "What kind of influences do I need?" He asked, thinking of his own language. 'If you think about it, English does that too. For questions, the tone goes up. That's why we don't even always need words.' This kind of learning was more than he'd ever hoped for. It was harder than anything else, but that made it that much more desirable. If he could finally do this, he would be able to say he really accomplished something. 'Well, father always did want me to learn another language.' The thought was slightly bitter.

"What do you want to try first? A question or a sentence?" inquired Katalina. "It's hard to explain how it should sound without doing it for you." She smiled shyly. "Try this," she began. She closed her eyes and spoke slowly and smoothly in her own tongue. It was a short sentence, but clear. At the end, it had an odd wavery quality, as though she were unsure of the last word or two. Opening her eyes again, she said, "That's what a question should sound like. Try it."

Joshua was quiet for a moment before he tried. He was replying the question in his mind, trying to get it to sound right. When he though he could mimic the sounds, the teen repeated Katalina's words. Though it wasn't as noticeable as hers, Joshua's last few words wavered ever so slightly. "Was that right? What was the question anyways?" He found he like the odd language. It flowed much smoother than his own did. Joshua was excited and wanted to learn as much as he possibly could.

"It was pretty close," said Katalina cheerfully. "You need a bit of a stronger waver, but you had the words almost right. The question was very basic - I think in your tongue it would be something along the lines of 'How long have you lived in our motherland?'" She smiled. "'Motherland' is one of our terms for the ocean," she explained. "So although it might mean 'ocean', it could also mean 'home' or 'home place'."
She decided she liked teaching him. He was so eager to do it right that it was just a pleasure to show him how. Perhaps if she had a less willing pupil it wouldn't be as much fun, but for now she really enjoyed it.

Joshua nodded, trying to remember how he had made the waver. Closing his eyes, he tried the question again and had a noticeable improvement. He looked at Katalina, eyes shining. "Like that? Was that better?" He felt like a kid at christmas. The more he repeated the words, the better they sounded. 'Course, that's true with any language as flong as you have a teacher who speaks it.'

Katalina's eyes brightened. "That was it, right there. Do that again, so that we know that that wasn't just a fluke," she said with a grin. "Practice is a good thing." She repeated that sentence in her own tongue, figuring he might want to hear it. The more he could learn, the easier it would make this - all ocean languages were closely related, which was why most speaking mercreatures could understand each other. She figured she would save that little bit of news for when Joshua could understand enough to follow a basic conversation.

Joshua thought he could do the question now. Unforunately, he tried to speak a little too fast in his excitement and stumbled. "Let's try that again. Without stumbling." He muttered to himself. The teen took a calming breath then tried again. Once more, he managed to produce the odd waver of the question. Grinning brightly, it was all he could do to not jump up and down in joy. Joshua tried repeating the sentance that Katalina had spoken. "What was that one?"

Katalina chuckled when Joshua stumbled over his words. She was pleased to see how excited he was, especially since she'd never really thought of her language as something to be excited about. "Good," she said lightly. "Now we know there's one thing you can definitely say."
"I was just repeating myself in my own tongue," she replied when he asked what the second sentence had been. "Basically, practice is good. Of course, not everything in your language can be interpreted, and vice versa, but it's a good beginning. Is there anything in particular you want to learn how to say, as a real start?"

"I want to know how to greet someone!" Joshua didn't even have to think about what to start with. How else was he going to talk to others if he couldn't even say hello? 'Ha! And father said nothing good would come of studying the sea. How this?! A whole new language!' "What kind of formalities are there? Or are there any formalities? Does it include more than words? Like hand gestures too?" Joshua snapped his mouth shut suddenly. He smiled sheepishly. "Sorry. Got carried away again."

"There are definitely formalities," said Katalina immediately, smiling a little. "There aren't any gestures, unless you're greeting a stranger of very high ranking - that would be the leader and his or her children, the chosen future leader if there is one, and the children of the future leader, particularly if one of them has been chosen to follow in their parent's footsteps." She made a sweet, almost singing sound, drawing it out slightly, and paired it with a hand placed just where her heart was. "That would be a very formal greeting for someone highly ranked, like I told you before." Making a higher, slightly sharper sound, she said, "That's less formal, but for someone you don't know well - strangers and recent acquaintances."
She studied her hands and made another sound - more mellow and friendly - after a moment. "That one is for friends and family. That would be the one you would most likely use if you were to greet me in our tongue." Then she grinned a bit. "I don't think you'll ever use this last, but you might as well know it." She made a last sound. It was a lovely sound, soft and full of warmth. "That one is supposedly also for very close friends, but I've never heard anyone use it in any other way than to greet a lover." She smiled and shrugged.
"Try repeating them to me, and tell me who you would greet using each one."

Joshua was quiet for a moment, repeating the sounds in his mind. Hesitantly, he tried the first one and placed his hand over his heart. He didn't quite manage the "singing" tone of the sound. "That one was super formal. For leaders, present or future, and their children." That one was easy to remember. Simply, the very important people.
He moved to the next sound instead. With the result being a squeak when he tried to hard. The teen blushed then tried again with better results. It was similar to Katalina's, though at a lower pitch. "That is just your basic stranger right? Someone you don't really know."
The third sound was much easier for Joshua. He had the mellow sound almost right away. He looked slightly surprised that he'd gotten it so easily. "I like that one. That one is neat! Anyways, that's for friends. People like you." He frowned, slightly confused. "But you the child of a clan leader, so would I use the friend one or the leader one?" Joshua waited for her answer, wanting to settle that issue before he tried the last greeting. Besides, as she had said, there was little chance he would ever use it.

"You have all the meanings right," replied Katalina with a smile. "But you need to work on the formal ones. But you're right - the third and fourth ones are the nicest, I think." When he asked his question, she frowned thoughtfully for a moment, then shook her head. "No, you would address me as you would a friend, I think. That particularly formal one is meant for strangers. Once they are friends, you can address them as such - but for people of that rank, you should wait until they address you that way first. Just to be safe."
She grinned. "Now, you don't get out of trying that last one even if you never use it in practice. Think how impressed your lady humans will be. Show me how it's done, Joshua."

"Alright. Makes sense." Joshua nodded, storing the new information away for later. "And I wasn't trying to get out of it, I just wanted to clarify that point. I was going to try the last one." Though he was slightly hesitant about it. It had sounded so nice when Katalina said it that he didn't want to mess it up. The teen mimicked the sound, actually coming fairly close to the original sound. "Hmm. Nice, but I still like the third one best. And that one is for lovers." He had to chuckle though, thinking of what the human girls would say. "Katalina, they would probably think I'm a freak if I ever said that to them. A lot of human girls don't care about words."
