"Sure. Of course you were," replied Katalina amiably. When she heard him do it, she nodded a little. "Pretty good. You'd pass - our girls might giggle a little, but they would know what you meant." She thought he'd done pretty well, for the first crack at them. Especially considering that, well, he'd never heard them before.
When he mentioned the human girls, though, she blinked. "Really? Then how do you impress them, if they don't care about what you say to them? Do they just pick mates among the males, or how does that work?"

Joshua blinked in surprise at Katalina. In retrospect, he supposed he shouldn't have been surprised by the question. 'This could get awkward so easily.' "This is just a generalization remember. There's always ones who aren't like this. A lot of human females are more impressed by gifts. Particularly shiny gifts like jewelry. Silver, gold, and diamonds are among the favorites. Flowers and sweets are also fairly good choices for gifts." He paused, thinking about how to phrase his thoughts. "The male that can give the gifts that most appeal to the female is the one who gets her. Oft times there's more than one male competing."

((OOC: That's okay. I'm having the Weekend from Hell, too.))
"Oh. Like centaurs," said Katalina, losing interest somewhat. "Does the female attack the male if the presents aren't enough for her, like centaurs do?" She inspected him. "I don't see any scars on you," she added dubiously. "Besides, what do they need them for? Can't they just choose one? It seems easier."
There was probably a protocol for humans, too, she thought wearily. But they probably didn't have to either obey their fathers or disown themselves.

((Well, actually it wasn't that bad. Just small spots of rain here and there. With one small hail shower thrown in.))
Joshua sighed, trying to explain the female mind. Something no human male could truly understand. "They don't attack. None of the scars I have are from girls. The presents are used to show which male will keep her happy. The females choose whoever will give them what they want and need." He shrugged. "At least, that's the best I can explain it. If you really want to know, you'd have to ask a girl. I can't really tell what goes on in their minds."

Katalina just chuckled. "Maybe I could ask your friend. Rose? Is that her name?" Then she added lightly, "I don't think it's really important, though. It's just that I was curious. Now, let's try those greetings again. Whatever order you like, and tell me one merperson you've met that you would use that greeting on - well, except the fourth one. You can just try to say that one."

Joshua chuckled, nodding. "Yeah. You might get more sense out of her than me." He paused for a moment, remembering the sounds. He decided to start with his favorite of them, the mellow friend sound. He made the sound easily, then grinned. "Friends. Like you! And maybe Nezik." From there the teen moved to the fourth greeting as it was easier than the other two. Like before, it was close, but not quite there. "Don't have anyone to use that sound with."
Taking a deep breath, Joshua prepared to try the two sounds he had issues with. The first one, he still couldn't quite get the "singing" quality of the sound. The sound was combined with a hand over his heart. "That would be for your Mother right? Now's the fun one." He made a face. The teen had some issues with the higher, sharper sound. He was getting it though, slowly but surely. 'At least I didn't squeak this time.' That would be for strangers. Like Violet. Would Narcis count? Or do the Siren's have their own greeting?" The two cultures seemed so similar to Joshua.

Katalina chuckled softly, but quickly sobered when Joshua asked about the Sirens. "They have a different language, yes," she said quietly. "It's similar but not the same. Like your languages...French and Spanish, I think they are? We can understand one another, but it's not the exact same language." She looked down, becoming a little sad. "The Sirens aren't really as similar to us as you might think. A lot of things are different in their culture, as I'm sure Narcis or my mother would tell you if you ever find time to sit for a while and talk to them."
Shaking it off, she smiled. "You're doing really well with the friend sound. The lover one needs a bit more work. The other two...they aren't bad. Merfolk would understand what you meant, at least. That's pretty good for a start. Goodbyes are a little more complicated - there are at least eight of them, depending on who you're speaking to and how long it's likely to be before you see them again, so maybe we won't start on that just yet. Is there anything else you want to try?"

Joshua noticed how quiet she went as he asked about the Sirens. 'Okay, mental note - leave the Sirens alone. Go ask them questions, not Katalina.' He didn't want to upset Katalina again.
Joshua looked surprised. "Eight different ways to say goodbye?" 'Actually, now that I think about it, English has a lot of different goodbyes as well.' It just didn't seem like it. 'I bet to number them off, there would actually be more than eight ways.' "Anything else...." He trailed off, wondering what else he wanted to try. In truth, he wanted to learn every thing. He knew that would take time though. "Um....I think...." He brightened suddenly as a thought crossed his mind. "How to ask for names! That way I know who I'm talking to!"

Katalina realized that he thought he'd upset her and she was sorry, but she didn't really want to talk about the differences in the Sirens' culture. Not that Joshua would know anything about this, but she knew that those differences were one of the only things that kept making her refuse her family's wishes, when otherwise they would have so perfectly coincided with hers.
Never mind that, she didn't want to think about it.
Katalina smiled a little when he thought up another thing to ask about. "Yes, there are a lot of ways to say goodbye. But asking for names is a good one. It's pretty universal, too. There are two versions, but you only need to know one - no one will be offended if you use it in place of the other. It goes like this." She made a light, fluting, rather bubbly sound that had the waver at the end signifying a question. "And if you do that without the waver and say your name right after, you're stating what your name is," she explained.

Joshua listened with rapt attention. He tried to mimic the sound but stumbled inn the middle of it. He made a face and growled. Taking a steadying breath, the teen tried again. This time, he got the basic sound, but missed the waver. Joshua shook his head violently. He tried once more, determined to get it right. He got a sound right this time as well as a small waver. 'Third time's the charm!' He thought happily as he grinned. "Was that good?" He thought it had been, but Katalina was the expert.

Katalina chuckled as she listened to his attempts to mimic it. "I may just have to get Narcis to teach you the Siren language," she murmured. "It's a little easier." By the second time, she was nodding a bit, and by the third she was smiling. "Good," she assured him. "Very good. No one would mistake you for a native speaker, but they'll appreciate your effort. All but the youngest should even understand it," she added teasingly.
"Now," she said. "Try to introduce yourself instead of asking what my name is. Remember what I told you?"

Joshua shrugged, still grinning. "Considering I don't have a tail, I don't think anyone could mistake me for a native speaker." He wiggled his toes as proof. "As long as they understand what I'm saying, it's all good."
Changing languages, he made the sound for introducing himself. The more he said it, the clearer the sound became. He remembered to keep the waver out at the last second. He finished the sound by tacking his name onto the end of it.

Katalina nodded when he was finished, looking delighted. "Perfect. That one was right on it. Do you realize that now you can carry out a good portion of a first conversation?" She chuckled. "I'm not kidding. Among our people, a first conversation usually amounts to hello, an introduction, a chat of maybe a few minutes, and goodbye. Then we use that to figure out if we want to talk to the person in question again."
Her eyes sparkled slightly. "I think they'll be intrigued enough by a person who can speak our tongue that they'd want to speak to you again."

Joshua looked like a kid in a candy store, a huge grin spread across his face. He was pleased with what he'd managed in a short time. "I hope they'll want to speak to me again! That's why I'm learning this after all." He paused, an odd thought crossing his mind. "Can all of the merfolk speak english? How in the world did they learn it to begin with?"
