"Excuse me, sorry to disrupt." I said, swimming. "May I ask you a question? How old you are? I know it seems rude but...." I said. IF I started, I couldnt stop.

((OOC: You need to PM profiles to me. Please go back and check the rules. Thank you.))
Katalina's gaze shot to him, colour coming up in her cheeks. "I-- Who--?" Finally, she caught on. "Nezik told you, didn't he," she muttered, looking away. "I...Well, nothing happened between us. Exactly. It's just that..." She trailed off, studying her hands. "It's just all so hopeless that I don't even know why I bother," she confessed finally. "I don't even know what he thinks of me, and it's just...I should probably shut up. You don't really want to know about this, do you?"

Joshua shook his head, smiling slightly. "Who else are you going to talk to?" He asked with a shrug. He didn't mind be an ear for someone who wanted to talk. "Just don't get Nezik in trouble will you? He asked me not to tell." His bases covered, he was quiet for a moment. "If you really want to know what Narcis thinks, then ask." Joshua said it as if it was a simple solution. 'It's probably a really good example of easier said than done.' "Ask him to give you a straight answer one way or the other."

((OOC: You sure do a lot of camping.))
Katalina gave him a shy grin back. "I could try keeping it to myself. I was doing pretty well, don't you think? Don't worry, I won't be too annoyed with Nezik. He's got a tendency to blurt things out - he's a little brother, it's practically his duty to embarrass me." She shook her head when Joshua offered his advice. "I can't...I could never just ask him. I don't have that kind of...fortitude. Besides, if I asked and I found out he...cares, I'd just be more miserable." She shrugged a little. "Like I say, it's pretty hopeless."

((I guess I do, between Scouts and my parents. But it's fun. I enjoy it.))
Joshua looked confused. What Katalina said didn't make sense to him. "If you like him, then find out he cares, how in the world will that make you more miserable?" Something just wasn't clicking in his mind. Moving from point A to point B just wasn't happening.

((OOC: I like camping a lot, but I rarely get to do it. sad ))
Katalina began to dismiss it, then paused. "Well, it's complicated," she said almost apologetically. "I'd have to explain some things about the differences in culture between our peoples, and the things that we'd both be expected to give up in a union. I don't think you're really that interested," she added, only half-teasing.

((My scout group likes camping so we go every other month or so.))
Joshua still looked confused. "But I do want to know. How are they so different that it'd make you miserable?" His head tilted to the side as he tried to puzzle it out. "The two cultures seem so similar. What's the big difference?" From everything he'd seen, the two were very similar. Similar enough to breed together at least.

((OOC: *sadface* I don't get much chance. Most of the time, it's too cold.))
Katalina sighed and draped her arms across a convenient rock under the water, leaning forward slightly. "Might as well break out your notebook," she said. Then, with a slight, bitter smile, she started talking.
"Most ways, our culture and the Sirens' aren't so different. But in some ways, they are. One of those ways is language, as you know. But another is...well, emotional attachment." She flushed slightly. "For humans, I think the term would be...polygamy? Well, anyway, Sirens are accustomed - expected - to have several females to every male. The tradition was born because there are more Siren females than males. The male might have a preferred one, one he cares for above the others, but she's still one of several. Among the merfolk, it's one mate, just one, and you unite for life."
She shrugged. "It's a simple case of different raising. If I were the Siren, and he the one raised among the merfolk, it wouldn't be a problem. I would be expecting to share him, and just surprised that I didn't have to. But as it is..." She shook her head, pained. "If there were to be a union, Narcis would be expected to leave Riiya and Korai behind - presumably he would find someone else to look after them. That feels cruel."
Raising distressed dark eyes to Joshua, she finished, "I know that Riiya, at least, really does care and isn't just there for the tradition. I don't want to hurt her. But...I can say I'd try it their way, but I know that even if my family let me, I wouldn't be able to handle life that way."
She shook her head a little. "So that's why it would be even worse if he did care. Now you're sorry you asked," she added with the barest hint of a smile.

((Too cold? As long as it's above -20C I still go. Where do you live?))
Joshua shook his head ruefully. "I left it back at the hammock." He went quiet as Katalina began speaking. The teen listened attentively, curious. When Katalina had finished, he spoke again. "I am sorry I asked, but not for the reason you probably think. I'm sorry I upset you." His amber eyes were apologetic, asking her forgiveness. "You shouldn't have answered if you didn't want to." Now though, he thought he understood what the problem was. And to top it off, he wasn't sure what he could say or do about it to help Katalina.

((OOC: Up here, it gets to almost -50C in the winter sometimes. Once we nearly hit -60C. It was ugly.))
Katalina chuckled wryly. "You didn't upset me," she assured him. "It's the situation that's upsetting, and talking it out helped a little. I think so, anyway." She rested her chin on one hand, looking rather faraway. "It isn't so bad, I guess, not knowing. Thinking about what would happen if I did...there are worse fates than not knowing." She gave a little shrug of her shoulders. "I'm young and foolish. I'll get over it in time, right?"
Beneath the seeming casualness was a question that was more a plea. I will get over it, right, Joshua?

((Holy jeezes. Winter here is usually -20C - -30C with the odd day going almost to -40C. Where in the world do you live?))
Joshua sighed in relief, glad that it maybe helped a little. He could hear the plea hidden in Katalina's words. That was why he answered with confidence, even though he really had no idea. 'I just hope I'm not making things worse.' "I'm sure you'll get over, given enough time." He gave her a smile that was full of the confidence he didn't feel.

((OOC: D8 The North Pole. Well, not really, but close enough. What about you?))
Katalina smiled, seemed to relax a little. Before she could speak again, however, a young voice interrupted, "Get over what?" She looked over her shoulder and saw her brother looking back up at her through the water. "Nezik!" she snapped, more out of surprise than anger. "What are you doing here? I told you not to come back without someone guiding you!" "I did," said Nezik reasonably. "Narcis gave me directions." "Directions aren't..." Trailing off, Katalina threw her hands up. Nezik took the opportunity to grin at Joshua. "Hi," he said brightly.
