Chess? Ben was a little rusty, but he could never turn down a challenge. He took the glazed glass king and weaved it between his fingers. "How could I say no?" he asked with a devious smirk. "What if we make it more interesting though? Maybe with a small wager?" he inquired. Maybe Matt was taking what Aristotle had said literally. "When you are lonely, when you feel yourself an alien in the world, play Chess. This will raise your spirits and be your counselor in war." Was Matt lonely? Maybe he only lashed out against "Mudbloods" because he didn't have very many friends. Ben pondered this for a minute while studying his glass pieces.

"--" Lips had parted as though to speak but no sound penetrated the tense solidity of the compartment. A rigidity grinded his jaws together as his gaze rose suddenly, yet slowly, taking in the full size of the new form of the Undead King. The muggle of a man in a wizard-- he never quite understand that.

Gathering himself, the cheeky smile and cocky brow, he stood to bow, ostentatious and sinfully sweet. It brought a sick sense of humor, knowing the depth of pain in which Colton Raines was now suffocating beneath. And as Tay rose to straighten himself, the golden fire in his eyes spoke a forked tongues tail, one that simply knew, and gladly stood to watch him drown. His eyes had clouded for that one moment, as if connected to the boy spirit of Colt, before his attention snapped into focus to look upon the poisonous greens of Roi.

"But, of course..."

the summer had passed in a laughter-filled blur of excitement, enjoyment and bustling anticipation for the coming year. Within the short span of only a couple days, the extra guests of the Raines Farmhouse also felt just as familiar as the Raines themselves did for the Ravenclaw girl. Now, the strange feeling of alien separation that sat on Tristain's skin at lacking the company of all the happy faces was equally reflected on Phi. However she smiled without hesitation to the young girl as they quickly found a compartment for themselves and began to sort their spaces accordingly. Chuckling light at the young girl's humor, Phi nodded and added, "Well we can save the window seats for ourselves if they do come around." laughter tinkling in her throat as her eyes scrunched in a smile that had not seemed to ever not be present on her face through the summer - even in sleep.
She sat down comfortably into the familiar red, worn leather of the train that was taking her home once again, momentarily relishing with closed eyes the wafting smell of parchment and stretched leather of the seats and each students' luggage. Ink and new robes washing over the coming smell of peppermints from the candy trolley. Opening her eyes then at the queue of Tristain's next words, Phi's eyes widened with surprise and memory. Clear flash returning to the moment Tristain had run into her arms in greeting and confessed the existence of the invention she was now reaching for. Phi sat straight up and leaned forward with eagerness, taking the thing the girl offered her with every care and honor. It revealed itself to her in the light casting from outside the window. Phi felt a silent gasp pass her full lips as her piercing eyes of dark molten caressed and inspected every detail and form of it. Theories for its purpose and use and the magic and brain work that went into its creation forming with the speed of a printing press before Tristain continued with the show. Words of a poem, cryptic and so clutching they were instantly set into the memory of the brilliant Ravenclaw before the sphere burst into small flame. The shake seeming to create the spark that erupted each port opening with hot, fire breath that Phi marveled at. Its temperature perfectly calibrated for warmth and not burn, its brilliant light show reflecting in so many ways over the sphere's own surface, in the windows' glass and in the two pairs of eyes.
" Brilliant," Phi whispered despite herself. And when Tristain offered it into her hands, instructing her to shake, the only hesitation that passed between the decision of her brain and the physical motion of giving her body the command was a glance into Trsitain's bright and incredibly intelligent eyes before the redhead's hand began shaking it. Fire coursing through her very veins with surprise and the highest pride at seeing the creation of the magnificent young girl's hand.

Colton stumbled through the hallway of the Hogwarts Express as its pace began to increasingly slow, finally screeching to an abrupt stand still as it pulled into Hogsmeade Station. His heart beating faster now, Colt continued to peek through each compartment window, his vivid gray eyes searching for a glimpse of fire. He found Ronyo, alone by himself, Jayden sitting with his older brother Devin, but no Tristain, and more importantly, no Phinelia.

Just as the doors began to slide open, flooding the hall with a clammer of voices, shoulders to bump into, and faces to block his view, Colton looked into a particularly scratched window, only to see his sister enjoying her privacy with one of his best friends.

Sliding the door open with one hand, the contents of the other hidden safely behind his back, Colton greeted the girls with a calm,
"Hello, ladies," as he crossed the length of the compartment in one solid stride. He held a bag of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans out to his sister, knowing they were her favorite. "Hey, Trissy... Jayden was looking for you outside the train. I told him I'd find you for him. Why don't you go meet up with him; I'll grab your trunk." He could see the confusion, the excitement, and then the hesitation flash across his sister's face before she finally accepted the candies, waved silently to Phi, and swept out of the compartment with her kitten in hand.

Sliding the door shut again behind her, Colton then took a seat next to Phi, one hand still hiding patiently behind his back. He had planned this perfectly: he had managed to ditch his sister and friends just outside the train, managed to find himself an empty compartment and keep hidden, and managed to finish the poem that he had not had time to complete over the summer because of how busy he had been at the farmhouse entertaining their guests.

'Um, this is for you," Colton stammered in an unusually shaky voice as he finally reached his hand from around his back, revealing a blooming bouquet of stunning red roses, fresh out of his mother's garden. On top of the flowers sat an origami dove, folded artistically out of a sheet of parchment, next to a chocolate frog, still in the wrapper. His outstretched arm shook with nerves, too, as he handed Phi the gifts and waited for her to examine them, his heart becoming particularly unstable as she unfolded the paper dove that held the poem he had just written her, addressed to Ms. Phinelia von Ichval.

╔══════════════╗

I've wanted to tell you for oh so long,
But feared that I might get the words all wrong.

I've hesitated, worried, had nightmares, and stalled,
Simply because you've got me enthralled.

You, the girl who sat on that boat,
You, the one, for whom I've written this note.

The same girl now as you were back then,
Yet now I feel like a mouse among men.

But perhaps it's time that I join the men,
Unleash the lion, break out of my pen.

So here it is, what I've been dying say,
Phinelia, you are my sun, and I am your ray.

Your ray of light, always beside you,
To lead you home, to comfort, to quide you.

My passion for you, too, burns like the endless sun,
My heart beats swiftly, a wild horse on the run.

And now, for me, will you answer one thing?
Your word, one syllable, to my ears you will sing.

I'll join you in the sky, and together we'll shine.
Phinelia von Ichval, will you be mine?

Ronyo Storm - Slytherin
Fourth Year
Hogwarts Express/ Cabin

The hiss and clank of the familiar brakes made it more than clear the famous train had arrived at its destination, and the sounds and feelings of hundreds of new first years, returning seconds years, and the rest who were now full in the fold sweep to the white haired boy still in his meditative state. He felt the all to familiar sensation of his lion friend pass by and the quick beats of his heart told him all he needed to know. The smell of roses came just slightly after and the chuckle that wished to escape the Slytherin's lips almost broke his meditation.

After a moment he could hear that heart beat once again, and even though it was now further away it beat all the louder and drowned out all others. His beating heart was not alone as another just a few feet also beat with the same ferocity and raptures beat. It was then a sensation hit the white haired boy that almost knocked him off his seat and caused his own heart to skip a beat. The power was unlike anything he had felt and even without a normal clue or idea Ronyo knew full well what he had just been lucky to witness. His eyes opened then and he retrieved his bag and opened the cabin door. The chuckle he had held in escaped then and he smiled all the brighter as he passed the location from whence the power had emanated. He passed by without the slightest of words or the wish to glance in the direction for the scene was not from him. As the boy stepped down from the train he did look back and shook his head at his two friends who he was truly happy for. Standing in a open spot Ronyo waited for his friends to exit the train for that blast of power was too strong to interrupt and Ronyo dared not try. After all who could stop the power of love.

The train ride had passed faster than any she could remember. The first had been so long and filled with fidgeting and anxiety translated into her drowning herself in the books she had brought with her. The second filled with laughs and smiles yet still with the twinge of separation from the two friends that had sat in front of her; brain still trying to calculate and define exactly what friendship was and how to go about it. The third, most recent, had been a bit more separate. Their persons scattered in the compartments and little said throughout the rattling of the train's journey. This one; filled with awe and questions and shared spark over young Tristain's invention had so quickly spiralled into so many other topics and giggles of agreement that the call to begin dressing in robes had barely been heard. It did catch their full attention with a few blinks of confusion when it came louder form the prefect's head popping in to remind them, however. So Phi smiled to Tristain and rose from her seat; conversation still going on as they both reached for their stored uniforms. Just as Phi had begun pulling her right arm into the sleeve of her black and Ravenclaw colored's robes, the door slid open once more. The redhead momentarily did not care to glance up again passing the motion as the same or different prefect realizing their reminder was not needed a second time. However the voice then corresponding made her blink and look up immediately. Standing in the door with a most genuine smile than Phi had seen throughout the summer stood - fully robed and prepared - the tall and strong form of Colton Raines. Phi immediately smiled, but confusion returning as his next words directed themselves to Tristain. In the heartbeat-length the mirror of emotions managed to pass over the young Raines' face in reaction to the offer of seeing the boy she fancied (quite clearly, everyone could agree) Phi cast Colton a questioning brow at his out of character behaviour. She knew the Gryffindor had no real bitterness of hatred towards the younger boy mentioned, simply that which came from the big, protective heart he kept over Tristain. However it was still uncommon, if not yet completely unthinkable until this point, for him to offer a chance for the couple to be out of his sight.
As soon as the youngest of the three was eagerly out the frame of the sliding doors, The silent question spoke greater volumes in the silent company. A small smirk touching Phi's features as she observed him suddenly seem to change focus.
She seated herself again at his light gesture and felt the touch of their legs with a note of warmth. Suddenly, produced form a place behind his back Phinelia had not noticed him using as a hiding place, appeared a large bouquet. The Ravenclaw immediately gasped, emotion surging at the sight and scraping her throat as it escaped into her smile and eyes. "Oh," she breathed, shoulders rising in surprise and back straightening at attention before she reached out and took the beautiful, offered gift, "Thank you."
Bringing the perfectly formed flowers to her face, there was no doubt in her fierce mind that they were from the Raines' garden. She inhaled the sweet scent that revealed the flowers to have a pinch of magical help to them and giggled at imagining how their fiery color matched her hair. Bringing them down to reveal to her dear friend how thrilled and thankful she was for the surprise, her molten eyes gleaming with happiness suddenly noticed both the chocolate card as well as the folded paper. Taking the latter out, she looked up once more to Colton with a curious smile before she unfolded it carefully. Steady and nimble fingers taking care to leave the folds as they were so she could return it to the artistic form it had been presented to her in. Eyes growing wide as the words appeared from their hiding place and darted back and forth quickly reading the note that was so clearly written by Colton. Smile slipping and face's features completely replaced with shock and focus as she read the thoughtful words that harboured so much emotion. Her breath hitched as she sharply inhaled near the end of the poem and looked up to the writer with shining eyes. Teeth biting into her lower lips, she had curled into herself with one hand over her mouth as the other - shaking - held the heart-filled poem. Right hand lowered itself just slightly and mouth opened to say something, but voice completely lost she simply laughed quietly before nodding her head viciously. Red pigtails bobbing off and around her shoulders before she threw herself at the Gryffindor with extended arms and clinging to his neck eagerly with a firm kiss planting itself on his chin. Completely missing his mouth.

Body rigid, like a stone statue built atop a seat in one of the only compartments of the Hogwarts Express that was still occupied by students, Colton held his breath as he waited for Phi to read the musical words he had poured out onto parchment through the tip of his lucky quill just moments ago. He watched every detail of her face, from her changing expression, to the ruler-straight row of teeth that bit down nervously into her pale lower lip. He tried desperately to read what she was thinking, but even after a four-year friendship, Colt found himself surprised when Phi accepted him as her own in one very Phinelia-like gesture.

As her head jolted into a sudden repetitive nod, sending her deep-red locks of hair flying in all directions in their respective bands, the Gryffindor finally unfroze, a sigh of relief breezing past his lips in an icy-cool rush, and his eyes closing for a brief second. Before they were fully open again, warm, smooth skin pressed against his own burning neck, followed by a pair of eager lips against his chin.

Rather than freezing back into the nervous wreck he had been all morning, his reaction now came natural. His heavily-muscled arms wrapped themselves in a loose grip around her torso, and for the first time in a long time, Colton felt that Phi was finally safe, safe in his arms.

With a gaping smile that had sun-like qualities of its own, the boy looked down into the Ravenclaw's burning eyes, and the emotion he saw in them was very similar to that he could feel in his own star-struck gaze. Though he felt positive she wouldn't want to break off his stare, Colt held her chin gently between his thumb and finger so that she couldn't escape, then kissed her lightly on the lips in a similar fashion. It wasn't an exotic kiss, but one to tightly seal their future together.

After a long moment of resting his forehead against hers, letting his eyes swim deep into the depths of those across from, Colton unwound his grip and got to his feet, then helped Phi do the same.
"Uh, we should probably get going. Don't wanna keep Ron waiting too long," he mumbled in the awkward tone of a fourteen year old boy who had just secured a relationship with his first girlfriend. In one sweeping motion, Colton grabbed both of their luggage in one hand before sliding open the door to the compartment to let Phi lead the way. As he followed her towards the train's exit, Colt couldn't help but consider the fact that this was, without a doubt, the best start to a school year he had experienced yet, and he hoped it was only a prelude of what was to come.

Hildy sat on the plush seat of their private cabin, legs tucked up underneath her. Already in her school robes, her elbow rested on the windowsill as her teeth were set anxiously on her thumbnail. Her cousin was at the opposite window, not sitting, near pacing as he shuffled his weight anxiously back and forth. Both Balfords watched the incoming stream of students through the barrier and onto Platform 9 ¾, their eyes scanning the crowd for one particular blonde head. Rolf, on the other hand was snoring quite contentedly on the seat, oblivious to the worry of his mistress.

“I think I see her.” Hildy breathed quickly, sitting up straighter as Chase moved over to look over her shoulder. Hildy pointed to a group of students approaching, recognizing quite a few of them. Colton Raines, Phinelia Von Ichval, and Devin Cloud among them.

Chase’s eyebrow raised. “She was around that kid a lot last year. Are they dating?”

The young female couldn’t help but smirk as she looked back at her cousin. The expression on his face was too priceless. Chase fit his name perfectly. Especially before their grandmother put them on lockdown, he was after ever pretty girl that he saw. One more reason that Hildy felt guilty for the confinement that had been put on him. She kept to herself just fine, but Chase was a people person. It was sad to see him caging himself up for her sake. But ever since they had moved out of the estate, he had been more and more excited to get back to school and around their peers. Though it did seem that Belle’s name came up more than most.

”Why yes, Chase. I believe that they are dating.” Hildy drew slowly with intense satisfaction as she watched his brow furrow. Turning back to the window she pressed on, ”I mean, why not, he is really gorgeous.”

A swift open palm boffed her lightly on the back of the head which sent her giggling as she spun back to see his smiling but still intense face. ”Well then, I think this calls for more drastic measures.” Chase was still wearing jeans but had a big comfortable traveling robe on over his clothes. Flipping the hood up, she could only see his lips curving into a devious smile before he spun to pull the blinds shut on the windows and door. Opening the door and leaning out just enough to look around it, he was still for a full minute before ducking back inside.

”What are you doing?” Hildy hissed. Rolf stirred from his slumber, with an irritated glance at his mistress and her scheming cousin. The cat was still made about the stunted state that one of the boy’s spells had left him in.

”Just a bit of kidnapping.” There was a chuckle in his voice as he spied through the slit in the door, waiting for Belle’s blonde head to pass by so he could grab her up and snatch her away from the crowd. It had been a while since Chase had been free to let his mischevious side run free, he was smirking broadly at the idea of scooping up the petite blonde and separating her from her ‘male escort’. But just as a head of loose blonde waves passed the door, hands grabbed him from behind, yanking him back. ”What?!? I wasn’t going to hurt her!”

Turning, he stopped his chuckling as his green eyes came to rest on his cousin’s face. Her dark eyes were wide and panicked, her tan skin was pale and her lower lip was quivering. ”Ch-ase.” Her soft voice was choked with emotion. ”I can’t. Not yet.

Chase’s eyebrows furrowed as he guided her to the seat, brushing Rolf onto the floor with a quick wipe of his arm and much hissing on the part of the feline. ”Hildy, she’s your best friend.”

Tears started to streak silently down her cheeks, ”She WAS my best friend. And then I turned my back on her. For almost two years I’ve frozen her out of my life. And now I know that grandmother was sending her owls away. She must hate me.”

Chase rubbed her arm soothingly, ”Have a little faith, kid. She was still writing, after all of this time. She misses you. She will understand.”

Hildy sniffed and nodded, but didn’t look totally convinced. ”Just…let me talk to her tonight. On my own. In the dormitories. I promise, tomorrow you can steal her away and do whatever you like.” Chase smiled broadly and Hildy couldn’t help but laugh and swat at his arm through her teary eyes, ”Not WHATEVER you like. She is my friend after all and you are scandalous with girls.”

Chase chuckled as he ducked out of the way of his cousin’s swinging hand, stepping back to the door to see the blonde receding down the center aisle of the train. ”Scandalous, indeed.”

Devin and Jayden walked alongside Annabelle, who practically stayed with them the summer, much to Jayden's dismay. Soon enough, they found a nice, empty cabin that they can finally sit down and get comfortable in. Devin couldn't believe it was time again...time for another year at his favorite school. He would miss the fun time that he had over the summer. He would miss soaring through the air on his world class broom with Annabelle right beside him, helping him get much better at what he did. They finally sat down as a group in the cabin and put their luggage in their respective places, each of them plopping down onto the comfortable seat of the train, Annabelle and Devin once again sitting next to each other and Jayden spralling across the seat.

"Jeez Jayden, could you get anymore comfortable?" the young blonde said teasingly, a mocking tone in his voice. Devin and his brother were finally bonding through. This summer was definitely a first for that. Maybe it was because the two actually had more in common than they thought.

"Wait," Jayden retorted, retrieving his pillow from his bag and said, "Okay, now I don't think I can." He then laid his head down upon the pillow, looking up at the ceiling. Devin looked over at Annabelle, who seemed to be enjoying herself at the moment, probably lost in her own thoughts like she always does. He then decided to break the silence between them.

"So, did you enjoy your summer Belle?"" he asked with good intent. He hoped she enjoyed her time, because she sent most of the time over at the Cloud house; so really, he was measuring his hospitality and satisfying his need to talk to her at one time.

"I'll be right back," Jayden said right after he heard the question. Devin knew as soon as he said those words that Jayden won't exactly be right back. He knew exactly what, or rather...who he was going to see. Devin then cut in right before Jayden left.

"Tell her I said hi Jayden," Devin joked, uncharacteristically flashing a wink at the boy leaving. Jayden just rolled his eyes and left the cabin for awhile.

What I am doing: Out in the hall with Tris
What I want to be doing: Nothing else...

Jayden maneuvered his way throughout the crowded train looking for Tristain, the best memory of his beginning year Hogwarts. The times they spent together being simply unforgettable. He finally found the candy cart that they had first had their little secret meeting, but no Tristain; so Jayden pressed onward, toward the back of the train. After about 5 minutes of walking, Jayden found exactly what he was looking for. Those intoxicating blue eyes and beautiful locks of hair in which he has come to know and love. He walked up to Tristain from behind and hugged her for a brief second, not really giving her a chance to find out who it is.

"Tristain!" he said loudly, yet making sure that he didn't scream into here ear. He only wanted to speak over the crowd's overly volumed yelling. He waited for her to turn around and greet him, hoping that she wasn't mad at him for scaring her. Yet, maybe she wasn't scared at all. Maybe she was expecting him. He then awaited his fate anxiously, probably nervous for no reason.

Invidia Thorn
First Year

"Mum, please!" Invidia pleaded as she leaned out the window. She stifled a yawn and then continued, "Really, mum, don't spoil everything now. I think I know enough not to fall asleep and miss the whistle. I think I'm a bit too excited to sleep, really."

"Yes, yes I know dear. It's just... Well, just make sure to send us an owl tomorrow okay?"

Invidia curt nod, which is most she could give considering her head was in a window. Not to mention the fact, that the morning had began far too early in her opinion and she wasn't very much in the mood to have her head thrust in the window. Worst was that her head had been in this particular window for over well over 20 minutes, thanks in part to her mother's worries and last minutes 'reminders'.

"Dearest, I'm sure Invidia will be fine," said her father was, for what she figure had to be, the 15th time.

"I know, I know... It's just, oh poppet please be careful and... well, I love you," her mother leaned up on her tips of her toes and placed a soft airy kiss on her cheek.

"I love you too, mum," Invidia said smiling slightly. She didn't want to get emotional, she was in fact determined not to be, but she couldn't help the slight sting in her throat. Her father gave her a kiss on the forehead and his own words of encouragement and love, then they were off. They disappeared into the growing crowd on the platform. For a moment, Invidia didn't move and just stared out at the mass of people. Then she reclined back into the cabin and took a seat, eager for the trip to start.

Eretria quickly found a seat in one of the empty compartments and sank down into the seat, a book perched on her lap as she read. Well, maybe not reading so much as trying to get her mind off of the strange behavior of her father.

She was still trying to read when she heard someone at the entrance to her compartment. She looked up and realized that Amanda was standing there.
"Yeah, sure. I'm just trying to study a bit before the school year starts up." She gave Amanda a small smile, one that felt a bit forced, but that was the best she could do. Honestly, she didn't want to, but she didn't want anyone to think anything was wrong.
