It looked as though she was correct. Jibasth's roar of pain erupted as a clump caught him square in the chest, having thrown his head and neck back lest it drift towards Onasta. Thread seared into him, eating it's way down through skin as the redhead gave the command and image that he followed Between and beyond. When he emerged on the other side, green ichor oozing, he gave a snort and muscled his way back to position again.

A discordant bugle ripped from the normally melodic little siren as a clump of thread tangled with her legs. But as they arrived back into the winds once more, she could feel Seirath's pain pulsing.

Likely a result of being so active and persistent, Seirath met with yet more thread that fell and Amra threw out the idea of staying up for any longer. It was time to go to the healers. There was no next clump of thread, her small green needed a healer and right that instant. She was already oozing ichor into the air there was no way she would let her get hit so hard again.

Altitude Change! Hour 2, Round 1 Beings!

High Altitude Wing: Fire Storm
Mid Altitude Wing: Flame's Fury
Low Altitude Wing: Star Flame

Hour: 1100

Location: West of SunDust Hold, and approaching the more fertile land north-northeast of Western Hold. There are many smaller holds that use this land to raise herdbeasts, draybeasts, and lots of good farm land. There are also many small desert caravans from SunDust that stop here and trade. Any Thread that slips through might well cripple the land if it burrows, and has the potential to kill innocents below--especially as some of those caravans and smaller holds weren't built with Threadfall in mind.

Even Turns later, not all minor Holds have or had the means to rebuild with stone.

Conditions: Rukbat is shining bright and that means conditions are starting to get worse as warm moist air is pulled north from the approaching low. Convection is possible, though it's likely they'll move on well before any storms build up. Unfortunately, that means clouds might form rapidly and upset riders visibility. Be alert! Winds are still heavy and rough!

- - - -

On top of keeping tabs on his Wing, R'mor was still being fed periodic updates from Junenth. Things were just not going well. They'd already lost a bronzerider--an ex-Wingleader at that!--and they still had hours left to fight. Dragons were literally falling from the sky. On the one hand, he couldn't blame his dragonriders--they were fighting as damn well they could in miserable conditions. On the other hand, if he could find something they were lacking, something they were doing wrong, he could fix it! But there was nothing he could do to bring back the dead and the wounded; nothing he could say that would make any of this right.

Harper's glorified Threadfall. Stories of riders valiantly sacrificing their lives for the innocent of Pern; riders who met the enemy bravely, boldly, and heroes who made it out of harms way when things got rough... But it was all lies. There were men, women, half-grown youth putting their lives on the line. They were hurting, they were dying, and he couldn't stop it. No amount of leadership could stop the wind from blowing, or Thread from falling... All they could do was hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.

And today, it seemed like all of them were completely unprepared.

Junenth rumbled warning. The hour draws near, Mine. R'mor felt Junenth twist and hiss as Thread fell latched onto his wingsail. The pain reminded R'mor that he could not be consumed by the updates; he could think about them later. Junenth and he weren't out of the fray yet, after all. The bronze took a jump Between and appeared higher up, and slightly ahead. Though his wingsail sported new holes and frayed edges, they were still doing relatively well.

Relay this to the Wings... All of them. He instructed.

Junenth did has he was bad.
Riders of Western Weyr! Keep fighting, though the winds are as much our enemy as the silver Threads. Though it is a heavy burden, focus on the moment, on the now; though we grieve, though we have suffered terrible loss, the fight is only the beginning! The Enemy is upon us and we will not let those who have fallen die in vain! We will strike Thread down more fiercely; we will burn it to ash and light the skies up with our fire! We will not back down, we will not give up, we will not surrender this day to the wicked Threads that threaten our loved ones and Pern! Keep fighting, though it is hard. We will overcome this battle! We WILL persevere!

And with that, the Weyrleader gave the signal for wings to change their altitudes, and carry on the fight.

The rousing speech from their leader didn't seem to help as Adarith moved up to the higher altitude. A strong wind almost blew him right back down to the midrange fighters and he strained to regain his height. By the time he was back in formation, T'sar could tell his hearty fighter needed a break. The two thought with one mind as they Betweened back to the Weyr, in need of a rest to fight this high up.

The change of the hour meant they were only a fourth of the way through the fight, and F'ell sighed as he and Teth soared up to take their new position in the high altitude. The brown seemed absolutely fine despite the state of some of his wingmates, and as they got going he attempted to flame down some Thread.

Quote:
You try to flame down some Thread, but your flame comes up short. Whoops! Hopefully your Wingleader didn't see that. Nothing to be done about it now except eat some more firestone, and try to catch the next clump!

He missed marvelously, and F'ell sighed again. Really, Teth? The brown hummed that he'd do better the next time!

roll 1: Your dragon hits a sudden thermal of air, threatening to push them up unexpectedly, and to miss their target! If a bronze or brown, thankfully, your dragon is able to fight the current of air, and keep their position steady. [+1 Stamina]
roll 2: You check in on your dragon to ensure they're doing all right. Thankfully, your dragon responds that they're feeling fine. All that training and practicing is coming full circle, as your dragon isn't feeling particularly fatigued. If they are suffering from a Fatigue Effect, they get a burst of renewed energy and the status is removed. [+1 Stamina] If your dragon isn't suffering, you are allowed to quote a fellow wingmate (must be in your same wing) who is suffering the effect! Your dragon trumpets at them encouragingly, making them feel better, and giving them a renewed burst of energy and effort. Remove Fatigue Effect from one wingmate!
roll 3: Your dragon is effortlessly flaming Thread. Honestly, they almost seem to make it look easy. Both you and your dragon start to feel more confident, and even start to get a bit cocky. Low Altitude Wing was always the easiest wing to fly. Unfortunately for you.... Roll a D4!
- - - roll 3, part 2: 1. A guest of wind sends you out of formation, and you know your Wingleader (or their Seconds) just saw.
roll 4: You appear from Between only to find yourself in the perfect spot to catch a sliver of Thread. You successfully flame it down easily. [+1 Target Accuracy]
roll 5: A small clump of Thread has fallen through! You successfully flame it down. [+1 Target Accuracy]
roll 1: By Faranth! You and your dragon pull off a pretty awesome move to catch some Thread that's fallen through. You're able to save one of your Wingmates! Quote one of your Wingmates who took damage this Round! This will remove damage and any possible negative effect from that roll!
roll 2: Trying valiantly to catch some thread, your dragon flames a bit sooner than you would have preferred. Surprisingly enough, the flame is long, hot, and sustained longer than usual. Your dragon manages to flame the clump and return to their position in their wing. [+1 Flame Length]
roll 3: Your dragon dives for a strand of thread that has fallen through the upper wings. Right before they belch forth their flame, they suddenly jerk hard to the right, almost in a roll, and quite unexpectedly. Sure enough, a gust of wind would have whipped the thread back in their face! Instead, the strand whips by, and your dragon is able to successfully flame it. [+1 Instinct]
roll 4: Diving after a small clump, a gust of wind suddenly pushes the Thread back into you and your dragon! Roll a D4 to see if you successfully Between (or dodge) in time!
- - - roll 4, part 2: 2. You swiftly jump Between! [+1 Between Accuracy]
roll 5: Your dragon dives for a strand of thread that has fallen through the upper wings. Right before they belch forth their flame, they suddenly jerk hard to the right, almost in a roll, and quite unexpectedly. Alright, the higher altitude! At the signal to switch, dragon and rider both shouted their challenge at the silvery menace as they ascended. Illyriath in particular was still raging at their performance from earlier, and she wasn’t going to start them off as rough as before.

“On your left!” Zallea called to a wingmate as the green spewed flame and took out a dangerously angling clump of Thread.

Quote:
This is such a mess! Thread is everywhere. The High Altitude Wing is always in the thick of it, and today is no exception. If you are a green, or blue smaller than 30' you're easily able twist and wheel out of the way of the thick clumps. Instead, you're able to flame down a patch of Thread threatening your wingmates, and what a burst of flame it is! Quote a Wingmate who took Thread Damage and nullify it for this Round! +2 Flame Length
