Amid the emotional pain came a sharp, physical reminder that they had to focus. A small tendril of Thread had tangled itself around Nioweth's wing tip, and began chewing on the fragile sail. The dragon gave a small creel of surprise, but a quick hop Between turned it to harmless dust.
E'sul knew they had to focus... Grief could, and had no choice, but to wait.

There was a quick moment of quiet air, and E'sul offered Nioweth a bit more stone. Not only because she needed it, but because he thought--he hoped--she might better focus. Unfortunately, the little green gave a squeal of surprise as the stone slipped between her teeth, and she caught her tongue instead.

It was quiet… too quiet, if you asked Nyara. Mictecath’s tension leaked into her like a slow, insidious poison, and the young woman did everything in her power to breathe through it. Slow. Steady. Easy. In and out. They could do this…
A dragon roared above.
This was not their first Fall, no, and the sound of pained and keening dragons was not unfamiliar… but the tension that gripped them both was… it was different. Easy my girl, steady… come on love… Seconds stretched on endlessly, and Nya’s breath hitched in her throat as she sensed the dam of emotion Mic was blocking. She looked up, gasping as a draconic form fell from above.
RIXTH! The young Queen screamed, surging forwards, desperation the driving force behind her arrow-like form.
T’en… Nyara breathed, a whisper of an echo overshadowed by the storm that was her dragon. She clung onto the straps, heart hammering, feeling the taut, soft hide beneath her legs… They could do this… they had trained for so long, practiced so hard… and they had put everything that they were into this. This was what a Queen could do. I’m here, Mic. Let’s do this.
Mictecath roared as she flared her wings, angling herself beneath the falling bronze. She flew with the impact, lessening the strain on herself as Rixth landed. The long queen steadied them as her rider patted her side, angry and devastated by the pain and loss Thread had caused- was causing. How dare it try and take from her family! How dare!
Let’s bring them back my love… Nya drew her dragon’s focus away from the swirl of emotions, glancing over her shoulder to assess T’en and his darling bronze. It didn’t seem like the bronze was moving overmuch… but that was for the best, really… wasn’t it? That way at least Mic wouldn’t be hurt by accidental claw scrapes...
Oh, this was bad. It was so very bad.

Though the little green's tongue and neck ached; though she was burdened with grief, Nioweth focused on the fight ahead. There was no reason to suspect things would go wrong. In fact, as far as was concerned, things were going pretty well for the pair of them. Certainly, the tongue injury was unpleasant, and there were was some scoring on her neck and shoulder, just as there was some on his leg. But over all? They were doing well.
Unfortunately, there was a sudden worried creel as yet another wingmate fell. This time it was bronze Rixth... Oh, Nioweth's hearts broke. Not one, but two handsome wingmates had fallen this day, and she could only hope that Rixth at least would live. Well, she most certainly would need to visit, if he did. Just like she would visit all her wingmates, and coo over their scars and battle wounds.
But someone else was in need, and both rider and dragon saw it immediately. E'sul visualized the spot--and Nioweth made the jump--but things didn't turn out as planned. Perhaps it was the wind, or perhaps they had both under-shot...
Instead of appearing nearby, they appeared IN the tangle of Thread.
It was a thick patch, heavy, and E'sul struggled to see through the sudden shot of pain. In fact, the little green gave a shriek--and would have thrown herself Between had not Hers stopped her. NO!
Not because he didn't want relief, but because he honestly hadn't a second spot in mind. If she threw herself Between, he knew they'd be lost forever.... But that moment of desperation, trying to think of where to go--trying to think of High Reaches--was a few seconds too long and the damage was done. Nioweth gave a lurch as her wing sails were eaten, as Thread tried to devour more of her and her rider.
E'sul felt her falter, then drop like a stone from the air. He felt pain, but couldn't tell if it was hers, or his, until everything went black...
[E'sul and Nioweth are out for the rest of the game. Good luck, Trespassers!]

Sylfie and Hesperith had both been not only surprised, but alarmed, when a bronze fell (though Mictetath caught him admirably, of course!). To have such casualties so early into the Fall bode poorly indeed, and neither wanted to think about how many others might follow - about which others might follow - if this trend continued. Unfortunately, continue it did, and Nioweth - oh, poor dear Nioweth! - came plummeting down fast. Hesperith quickly rose up to meet her, positioning herself just so, but Nioweth was falling hard, and at a terrible angle to catch...
It was something the gold couldn't quite correct for, and the green struck her hard - and Hesperith could feel something crunch unpleasantly - before rolling off. No! Nioweth!
Anakumath was there to catch her properly, but oh, Hesperith felt just terrible...and her wing felt rather dreadful. Ohh, dear. This was going to be a long Fall indeed.

With the change in altitude, Cyliodath moved with his rank lower. In the movement, the slight lapse in coverage and flame a small clump of thread was missed by their regularly sharp eyes. Dusted with little laces of ichor on his muzzle and throat, Cyliodath’s movements slowed with pain. He tore threw the stone J’er carefully tossed him, carefully moving his snout to be certain the wounds weren’t too grievous.

With the change down to the low altitude, Wa’ren gives a mild sigh -- of relief? Exasperation? It was hard to tell. They were only a quarter the way through this fall, and he couldn’t deny that he was flagging mildly. Caironairth’s bitten tongue was sending the most mild waves of irritation and anger, mostly directed at himself. But out of the corner of his eye, a lingering sliver of thread was falling, so dangerously close to Caironairth’s flank. The gentle urge between has them appearing above it, searing it down before it could fall upon the queen’s wing.

The wind picking back up gusted a large clump towards them. The nudge and coordinates to jump were quickly followed, but it wasn’t quick enough -- as the clump coiled around a few spot on Caironairth’s tail just before he disappeared. Though burned to crisp ash as soon as they reappeared, the new scores ached minorly. It was only a collection of new aches to go with the rest of his new scores.

With a sudden sweep of air, Cyliodath was pushed upwards. He very nearly fought the thermal back downwards due to sheer bulk alone, just still sent in the opposite direction he would have liked. J'er gripped riding straps, leaned away from the tangle of thread landing on the left side of his beast. A furious bellow echoed from the blue's chest as they blipped between. The yawning ache of chill killing the spores as it scored his wing.

The massive brown gave a pained grunt, as they reappeared from between - and a sharp gust was there to greet them, slapping the dragon across the left shoulder with a sliver of thread. It ached long into the cold sanctuary of between, crackling off into frozen shards as they reappeared.

Despite the ichor oozing from Cyliodath, the blood that had now stopped flowing from J'er's shoulder and chin - they moved effortlessly through the air. Thermals working in their favor, moving them farther and away as they pleased. Turning with practiced ease without wingtips being snarled and scored. Flame satisfyingly turning thread into harmless dust. In this moment, everything was going fantastically.

Re-emerging from between, a new target was in sights, shot down by a quick burst of flame. Finally back on some semblance of track, and Wa’ren pat his dragon’s shoulder as they wheeled around for their next clump to sear.
