Joshua glanced up at Katalina. He hadn't even realized that she'd come over, he'd been too focused. Seeing her, he grinned. "Nope! Now I've got two teachers!" As far as he was concerned, the more who were willing to teach him, the better. "I...sorta?.....got this new one down."

Katalina did her best to look hurt. "Why, was I not good enough?"
Nezik goggled at her for a minute before choking back a giggle. Narcis merely looked amused. With a smile, Katalina dropped her mock-hurt expression. "The more the better, I suppose. Let's hear what Nezik's managed to teach you while Narcis and I were...busy."

"Um..Alright, I guess." Joshua looked slightly embarrassed. Slowly, he trilled the words for 'nice-to-meet-you'. He still pushed the last couple a little too high. "That was nice to meet you. And I learned wait, as in to get somebody else to stop leaving." He blushed though, not really wanting to mess up in front of his little audience. The sounds he made were passable.....at a toddler level. "I'm still working on that one." He winced slightly, thinking of the massacre he was bringing to the merlanguage.

Narcis had winced faintly when Joshua made the greeting sound, but he managed to restrain himself from saying anything. Katalina had noticed, though, and given him a sharp glance before returning her attention to Joshua. "It's a good start. Those last couple of words are a touch too high. But I'm sure Nezik's already told you that. Try the wait sound," she urged. "I can tell Narcis to go away if you want privacy," she added, smiling teasingly over at the Siren.

Joshua nodded sheepishly. "Yeah. Nezik said they were too high." He shook his head in response to Katalina. "No, he can stay. I just can't help but think I'm massacring the language." Still, he tried the sound for wait. It was understandable was the best thing he could say about it. "I really need practice on that one."
((I g2g. Is supper time.))

Narcis lifted a brow at Katalina once Joshua's attempt at the 'wait' sound had petered out. "Why are you teaching him our language in the first place?" he inquired briefly.
"Because he wants to learn," replied Katalina, nettled. Pointedly turning her attention back to Joshua, she said, "Yes, that one needs some work. But it's still understandable, which is pretty good considering you haven't been raised on the tricks of the tongue that we've been. We'll get through it."

"Thanks." Joshua muttered, thoroughly embarrassed now. He spoke up in his own defense though. "I though it sounded neat when Katalina spoke in the language. I thought it would be interesting to learn. Besides, then I could greet some of the merfolk in their own language. Then they might be more incline to talk to me!" He looked thrilled every time he thought of it.

Narcis turned his gaze nonchalantly to Joshua. "I'm not surprised that you want to learn, Joshua. That's not what I was asking," he informed the boy patiently. "You seem like the kind who wants to know everything they can about their chosen subject. What I wanted to know was why Sorry chose to teach you. That's a little more out of character." He was either unaware or uncaring of the fact that he had just revealed a very interesting facet of himself - he could understand people quite well. When he chose to.

"Oh. Well, I like knowledge." To Joshua, it seemed every time he opened his mouth, the Siren made him look like a fool. "Why-Never mind." He'd been about to ask why is was so out of character for Katalina but changed his mind. 'I hadn't thought he'd even really payed any attention to me.' While seeming to brush him off, Narcis had somehow picked up a bit on Joshua. It made him a bit envious that the Siren could understand things so easily.

"It's a sensible thing to like," replied Narcis calmly. Turning his attention to Katalina, he said quietly, "Cousin, I'm going to leave Nezik with you - I need to return home. We can finish discussing this..." He hesitated, glanced at Joshua and Nezik, and finished, "...later."
Katalina nodded. "Later," she agreed. She didn't sound too unhappy with the idea, which was strange. As Narcis left, she turned her attention back to Joshua. "Don't mind him too much - I like teaching you."

Joshua smiled, glad that she didn't mind teaching him. "Thank you." He wondered about their talk. What had they said? Had they reached a conclusion? What was going on? All these questions floated on the tip of his tongue. Rather than pry into matters that weren't his, Joshua simply bit his tongue and held the questions in. He waved good-bye as Narcis left.

Katalina shrugged a little. "I should thank you, really. You're a good student. Otherwise I probably would have given up by now. Narcis is right; I don't have much of an attention span." Noticing the eagerly questioning eyes of both Nezik and Joshua, she chuckled softly. "I can see you're both dying to ask something. Go ahead."

0Joshua glanced at Nezik, seeing if he was wondering the same thing. His gaze shifted back to Katalina. Now that she'd given him permission, the questions came spilling out. "So? What happened? Did you two work it out? Or what? You seem in a better mood than when Narcis arrived." He hoped it was good news for the mermaid, whatever they had decided. If they even decided anything at all.

Nezik allowed Joshua to ask the questions, knowing he wouldn't be able to phrase them right anyway. He figured they were wondering about the same things, or at least mostly.
Katalina waited until the flood of questions dried up. Then she smiled a little. "I don't really know what happened," she admitted. "I still don't know what he thinks, but at least he knows what I think. It's a start. I have no idea if we'll work anything out or if it's just going to be something that we know, but I am in a better mood," she admitted. "Keeping secrets from him was getting hard."

Joshua's smile was encouraging. "Well, it's a start! You can work on it from there." 'Baby steps, baby steps. Little tiny baby steps.' The odd thought popped into his mind. It was from a poem somewhere that he'd read once. "I just glad you're in a better mood." And he was. He was happy to see the mermaid happy.
