Joshua debated for all of one second. "Let's see if I can swim!" He grinned, then glanced at Nezik. "No offense or anything. It just feels weird trying to act like a stranger." Then there was also the little fact that he always wanted to meet more of the seafolk. The teen jumped on every chance he was offered.

Katalina grinned. "Thought you might say so. C'mon, Nezzy. Let's go find him a swimming partner." She gestured to Joshua. Despite herself, she was excited to see how things would work out with Joshua speaking her language. Sure, Caralei and Domenis, the two she'd already decided that Joshua would talk with first, were both pretty gentle with humans, but they still had no real reason to wish Joshua well. "Let's get moving," she said cheerfully.

Joshua stood and slipped into the water beside Katalina. "Do you want me to come? Or wait here?" His eyes were bright with excitement. 'This is beyond cool! I'm going to talk to one of the merfolk in their own language!' He was almost bouncing, even in the water.

"Well, of course you're coming," said Katalina, sounding surprised. "How else am I supposed to get you to introduce yourself? You're learning to deal with our folk on their terms. That means going to them. Unless you expect them to be coming to you once I'm not around to ask them to."
She grinned. "Let's get going." Gesturing to Nezik, she set off.

"Well I wasn't sure!" Joshua defended himself, looking indignant. The faded away though as Katalina set. Indignation turned into sheer joy. There was very little Joshua like more than swimming. One of those very few things though was meeting new people. And right now he was doing both. Slipping his mask on, the teen set off after Katalina. A huge grin was on his face.

Katalina laughed at him. "Sure, sure. We'll pretend to believe you," she replied cheerfully. "Now come on! The first folk we want to meet are actually much closer than you might think - just around that cliff wall there, there's a clan of merfolk. You can practice on one of them."
She had already let Caralei know that they were coming, so hopefully the blonde mermaid would be the one to greet them.

Joshua smiled, letting Katalina laugh. "You know, how did I manage to never find anyone if I live so close to so many?" He was anxious to meet more of the merfolk. It slightly irked him that he'd never found them before Katalina showed him. 'I guess they have to be good at hiding. Otherwise....' He let that thought trail off then pushed it away. He was not going to destroy his good mood with thoughts like that.

"We're good at hiding," replied Katalina quietly. "I lived in this cove for years without running across you, remember? We learned to be good at hiding to survive. Don't feel like you're unobservant - there's a reason humans don't see us very much. We work hard to keep it that way." Casually, she rounded the corner of the cliffs and nodded towards what appeared to be a sheer cliff wall. "This way."

Joshua nodded, glancing up at the cliff wall. It didn't look like there was room for a merclan here. Still, he kept his mouth shut and followed Katalina. He trusted her and, as she had proved before, not everything was as it seemed. As he swam, he mentally reviewed the words he knew. 'Please don't let me mess this up. Please, please, please....'

Katalina went straight up to the sheer cliff wall. Glancing over her shoulder, she gestured. "And down," she told him. Abruptly, she dived and was soon lost from sight.
Nezik grinned to himself. "What she means is that the entrance is down there," he told Joshua companiably. "Come on, let's catch up."

Joshua grinned at Nezik. "Considering her dive, I kind of guessed that." With that said, he flipped in the water, swimming after Katalina. Kicking his feet, he slipped through the water, watching for something that could be an entrance. He wasn't entirely sure what he was looking for though he suspected it would be concealed somehow.

Nezik was just ahead of Joshua. He gestured to what appeared to be a large boulder. Deliberately, he smacked the side of it with his tail. As slowly and irritably as it could possibly be done, the thing rolled aside and revealed a large dark hole.
"Come on," said Nezik cheerfully, not seeming at all put out by Katalina's not waiting for them. "She's probably already in there."

Joshua watched in amazement as the rigged boulder rolled away. 'So that's it. I must admit, it certainly works. No one would find it, hidden like that.' He did have to wonder why Katalina hadn't waited. She was usually good about keeping pace him him. Still, he shrugged and entered the hole in the cliff wall.

Nezik kept pace with him, looking ahead slightly with a hopeful look in his eyes. Eventually, a dark form could be seen ahead of them - certainly a mermaid. It seemed reasonable to assume that it was Katalina. But Nezik said nothing, and seemed to have decided to let Joshua come to his own conclusions.
Katalina herself was actually hidden around the corner with a couple of merchildren. They were her alibi for disappearing - she wanted Joshua to try it without looking to her at all, and she thought that having her hovering over him like an anxious mother dolphin wouldn't help his practice run at all. Caralei would be gentle with him.

Joshua saw the mermaid ahead. His first thought was that it was Katalina. He was about to call out to her when he noticed that things were off. This wasn't Katalina however much he'd initially thought it was. Coming closer, he figured this would be a good time to try. Katalina would forgive him for not catching up right away.
Taking a breath to steady himself, Joshua began though his nerves were buzzing. He called out to the strange mermaid with the high, sharp greeting for strangers. 'Katalina's right. Practice does help.' He was getting better at it the more he said it. The teen paused for a second before speaking again. He made the fluting noise with a waver at the end, asking for her name. Now, just to wait and see if she would respond. 'You know, I've swam with sharks before. Yet now, asking for a name, I'm more scared of this than sharks!'
