Joshua made a face when his speaking was critisized. "I know I'm not the greatest. Yes Nezik taught me that and yes I'm working on it." He looked confused as to what Nezik had said to make them gigle like that. He blinked in surprise, hearing the young girl's ages. "Actually, Katalina, I'm eighteen. So I guess I am older."

Katalina frowned, surprised. "Really? Why did I think you were sixteen?" she mused, trying to think. "You don't look much older than Nezik, and he's supposed to represent a sixteen-year-old. Maybe that's why."

Adamantia glanced back at Joshua. "So what's this?" she asked, all business as she gently tugged on his diving equipment. "What's it for? It looks heavy. Do you wear it all the time?"

Joshua shrugged in reply to Katalina. He had no idea why she thought he was sixteen. His attention shifted to Adamantia and her questions. "It's so that I can breathe underwater so no, I don't wear all the time. Only in the water, when I'm going far. I don't have the natural ability to breathe underwater so I reply on my diving gear." He wouldn't go into the specifics unless she asked. He wasn't entirely sure if she would understand. "It's heavy on land but not in the water. The buoyancy of the water makes it feel light." He was quite willing to answer her questions. Joshua loved children and their curiosity. Besides, someone should answer their questions - Weren't his always getting answered? It was only fair to return the favor whenever he could.

While Joshua talked to Adamantia, Katalina spoke in a low voice to Caralei, using their own language - she wondered wryly how much longer it would be before her own actions would deprive her of that security. "How did it go?"

"Very well. I was surprised. You taught your chick well, Sorry," replied the diminutive blonde with a soft smile. "I do not think you would have to arrange 'accidental' meetings for him anymore - his confidence grows with each test."

Katalina smiled, but her opinion did not change. Joshua needed more practice before he was ready to spontaneously speak to strangers.

Adamantia frowned. "But our humans do okay under the water," she protested. "How come they can do it and not you? I don't get it." She frowned, looked at Nezik and asked a question in her own language. Nezik, strangely, replied in English. "Tianara."

Adamantia smiled at him and then returned to what she'd been saying to Joshua. "Tianara did okay. How come some humans can do it and some can't?"

Kicks observed the whole exchange. He was quickly getting bored. He stepped forward and walked toward the group. Scanning their minds, he adjusted the shape of his vocal chords to speak the local language."Hello, all. Might I be of assistance?"

((The group is inside a hidden cave.))

Joshua looked confused by Adamantia. "Your humans? Tianara? I have no idea what you mean." He shrugged helplessly. Something Nezik had said earlier came to mind. "You mean you've got a human, that was raised here?" His voice was excited. If this 'Tianara' could do okay underwater, maybe Joshua could learn. 'Maybe I can get free of this silly gear!' Even if he couldn't learn, just to talk to a human living with merfolk would be interesting.

((And Kicks' species can instinctively sense the location of non-damned life force. Unless you're all undead or unless you've all pledged your souls to the Inferno he knows exactly where you are and how best to reach you.))

((OOC: I believe the point that Lucky was trying to make is that they're going to think it's weird that a total stranger got in unnoticed and without help, with which I fully agree.))

Caralei started at the voice of a stranger. She turned wide eyes on Katalina. "You didn't say you brought others," she accused.
"Because I didn't," replied Katalina as both women turned to look at him. Since he seemed to speak their tongue, she didn't bother to switch. "Who are you, and why have you come here?" Her tone was not hostile, exactly - more confused and vaguely perturbed.

"Yeah," said Adamantia, perfectly uninterested in this new stranger because she was busy talking to Joshua. "Tianara still lives here, but the patriarch thinks that she's getting too old to live here anymore - pretty soon she has to go live with her own kind. It's right, but it seems mean." She pursed her lips slightly, as though in thought. "Don't you think so?"

Kicks paused. He'd not expected hostility. He spoke again in their own language. "I am but a wanderer, kind lady, who has heard of the predicament of the aquamythicae on this world. If I might be of assistance to you? I am skilled in many things, from combat to negotiations, and if I wish I may even cloud memories to a small degree." He worked the 'ingratiating traveler' angle perfectly. Millenniums of wheedling his way through non-life had given him a personality that was almost naturally devious and adaptive. And it was true what he'd said. He really had heard about the predicament the aquamythicae were going through, and he did want to help them. Admittedly, he didn't want to help them win, but that was a minor point.

Joshua glanced at the stranger, then back to Adamantia. He was speaking the merlanguage so he had no idea what was going on. Shrugging, he decided to get a play-by-play from Katalina later. The thought of a mer-raised human was much more intriguing.

He shook his head slightly at Adamantia's question. "I don't know. Would she still be allowed to at least visit?" He paused for a second, debating. The urge was too strong so he threw caution to the wind and asked. "Could I meet Tianara?" Joshua devoutly hoped Tianara could teach him whatever tricks she used for living underwater. Even if she couldn't teach him, the teen still wanted to know how she did it.

Katalina's eyes darkened slightly. "A wanderer from where?" she inquired, still mostly confused rather than hostile. "It is hard to get in here. How did you find your way in?" His offer was intriguing, but also worried her. What would he get out of this? More to the point, what did he want to get out of it?

Adamantia looked forlorn. "Maybe," she said. "I don't really know - I think it wouldn't be very often, and probably not at all when she starts to learn to live like a human and not like one of us." When Joshua asked if he could meet Tianara, Adamantia considered for a few minutes, then turned and squeaked at Clirani, who let go of Katalina's hand and swam away at full speed. "She'll go get her," said the little girl calmly. "It'll probably be good for Tianara to meet other humans."

Joshua grinned, watching little Clirani swim off. "Thanks!" He kicked his feet, waiting. As he waited, he began trying to think of how Tianara could deal with being underwater. There were several possibilities the ran through his mind. A random thought popped into his head. "How old is Tianara?" Was she little? Or was she older than him? How old were the humans when they were returned to the human world?

Adamantia shrugged. "I dunno. Probably a little older than me - she was here when I was hatched, but she was just a baby then." Then she turned around with a smile. "There she is."

Tianara came around the corner escorted by Clirani. Even if she had been a mermaid, she would have stood out - her black hair and dark blue eyes were a huge contrast to the three mermaids of this clan that Joshua had seen so far, all of whom had been grey-eyed blondes. She was very pale, too - obviously she didn't often see the sun. The only awkward note was that clearly, merfolk didn't understand the need for clothing on a human that lived among them. Otherwise, she could easily have passed for an average teenage girl.

Her eyes passed easily over Katalina and Caralei, and locked onto Joshua straight away. She swam up to him, swimming as a mermaid would - legs locked together and moving as one, like a tail. Turning her head, she bubbled at Clirani and Adamantia, who clicked and squeaked back. Then she turned to Joshua and said softly, "Hello. Clirani said you wished to meet me?"

Her voice had a strange, lilting accent to it - not quite what the mermaids had when they spoke English, but very close.

Joshua blushed bright red when he saw Tianara. Somehow, it hadn't occurred to him that she wouldn't have clothes. He kept his eyes firmly locked onto the girl's dark eyes. "Um...Hi. Yeah. I-I was...um...curious. About how you d-deal with being underwater." He stuttered slightly, still trying to get over his shock.

Tianara watched him blush curiously. As her eyes landed on his diving equipment and the suit, she realized abruptly what the problem must be. Smiling a little, she pulled her free-floating hair around her to form a sort of cloak that covered her - mostly, anyway - to the thighs. "Better?" she asked. When he finished stuttering out his question, she shrugged. "I have never known anything else," she stated simply. "The merfolk treat me as their own. Their power helped shape my body, my lungs, to breathe water or air the way they do." She smiled. "It is a good life. I might as well ask how you adjust to living on land." Then her smile faded, as though she had just remembered that eventually, she would have to adjust to living on land.
