Ara

Tears dampened Ara's face, meeting beneath her chin and dripping onto the sands at her feet. She had seen violence before at Hatchings against human and dragonet alike, but the bravery of the dragons who had been wounded, potentially spending their lives in defense of human beings, was almost too much. It was a miniature version, perhaps, of the risks they would take as adults fighting Thread, and so she knew it was ridiculous for her to be upset by it, but it was hard to watch.

With a few shallow breaths and one deep one Ara composed herself once more, standing up straighter for the regal procession of a pair of golds, though she could not quite stop her silent weeping. Naturally she would not be the person any of those dragons wanted, but it was her duty to present herself at her best before any and all dragons, but especially these young metallics, whose choices would have such a tremendous impact on Pern in a few turns.

The drudge girl did not allow herself to fall back into watching the proceedings with her unfocused gaze until the metallic party's promenade passed her by and she could rest assured that she remained anonymous and unoffensive.

The Sunshine green creeled unhappily, her head swiveling back and forth until she almost made herself dizzy. Oh, so much was happening, and there was so much unhappiness! She didn't know where to start! If she cringed back from Blue Moon's words, well--well. The green seemed to unhappily accept the rebuke, toddling back to the rest of her siblings. Avocado seemed to have things in hand.... almost.

She paused by Funfetti for a moment, crooning a touch anxiously. Would he mind being helped? She was careful, using her claws to help chip away at the shell that was still stuck against her poor brother! There, that should help! Oh, but.... Distracted, the baby immediately toddled away once more, drawn to the feelings radiating across the sands.

Surel and Dystzha would each receive a gentle touch, and the baby did her best to radiate calm at them both. There, now. Things would be all right--Surel had exactly the right idea, and Sunshine was proud of them both. And over there....

With a soft creel, the little green pressed herself again Ara's side, doing her best to soothe. Don't give up. The green urged, sending as much love and trust as she could to the weeping girl. I know things seem awful right now... but it will get better. I promise.

Dystzha - Western - She/Her

The arm bracing around her back was a welcome relief, for between both of her savaged legs, it was hard to figure out where to keep her weight centered. Dystzha wrapped an arm around Surel’s shoulders, to help brace herself as she finally took stock of the wounds.

It… wasn’t good. The large carves and jagged tears wept red, down into her sandals and onto the sands. Oh… Oh that wasn’t good.

There’s a slight tremble to the hand on her back, and Dys squeezed Surel out of reflex. “I’m okay.” She found herself mumbling for her friend, trying her best to reassure her. “It looks worse than it feels - ha, nh, trust me.” Lies, white lies, but she’d do that to put on a brave face, forcing a smile at her friend.

Impressions were beginning to happen around her, so many more eggs were cracking open, but there was no denying she had to get her legs seen to. She could admire them all properly when she had been attended to.

“Alright, let’s --” And suddenly there was calm, peace where she had felt the bubbling sense of panic rising over her injuries. But there was suddenly a little green in sight, and though she held still, the green eventually moved on. Oh, she wished the little Sunshine Green well and good luck finding Hers, before being able to smile a bit wider at her friend. “Let’s go, then.”

At least the healers were able to meet her at the edge of the sands, and she hadn’t had to limp too far.

Divisti She/her - High Reaches

So much was happening that Divisti lost track of the conversation with Beelim. Finally things seemed to be slowing down, though now she was concerned for the boy who had been carried off the sands on a stretcher. Would he survive? She knew it was the risk they took standing here. But that didn’t make it any more pleasant. Then there are two golds and another fight breaking out. Oh dear.

She shifted from foot to foot, needing something. Human connection or something. Quietly she spoke to Beelim. “You okay?” She wasn’t even sure if she was okay. She could provide comfort though.

Heleste She/her - High Reaches

Every time Kedriom paused, Heleste gave a little show of encouragement. Either a gesture or a small push, as she walked along with him. “You got this!” She told him. Hopefully the bronze would not mind her there. She was a little fearful after the baby attacked someone. But other girls seemed to be moving as well. The gold and bronze pair were certainly compelling!

Ara

Ara's heart nearly stopped when the beautiful green who had emerged from the Sunshine Egg came over to her and pressed herself to Ara's side. A dragon had never knowingly, deliberately initiated physical contact with her, and it was a glorious shock to feel the physical and emotional warmth radiating from the young green. Ara tried to notice everything about this moment, though she could not help feeling surprised by how relatively light the dragonet was, given her size. She was almost accustomed to the enormity of adult dragons, and this hatchling's relative weight was so much less than she'd expected. But, of course, some of the newly Impressed did carry their beloved dragons from the Sands, she knew.

"You are so kind to say so to me," Ara murmured, rubbing away her tears with the hand farthest from the dragon and unwittingly dislodging some of the fish scales which still clung to her from the chore she'd abandoned to attend this hatching. "And to take time from finding Yours."

This green absolutely must be the sort of dragon the ballads spoke of when the immeasurable compassion of dragons came up. And she was so young! Yes, dragons achieved consciousness while still within their shells, but this green was much more empathetic than many adult humans Ara had known. She smiled down at the green, still a little wibbly and watery around the eyes, but no less genuine for all that.

"Thank you."

Funfetti Blue let out a delighted keen when Sunshine Green came over to assist him, leaning out to boop his sister. Then, upon pulling himself fully free of his egg, he turned to where the 90s Picture Day Twins and Avocado Green were, offering them a similar keen.

But he didn't linger long now that he was free. Instead, he made his way towards the candidates, pausing at a small group of girls to offer honks of greeting to them. Yes, each Lusialu, Yunara, and Kinyegele would receive a small warble before he leaned back onto his hind legs to sit up in some mockery of a begging position. Are you having a good time? he asked, eyes whirling blue and green in anticipation of the answers he would receive.

Vannek

He knew he wasn't supposed to be angry, that they would find balance when they Impressed, but Vannek despised the appearance of weakness, and right now it was all he could feel. He had been so worried about one of these babies taking out his eye, when he should have feared for his spine.

When he felt the calming mental touches of Sunshine and Avocado he let them in, his breathing coming easier as he tried to bury his discomfort. The candidate moved out of the formation that Lisa Frank had demanded and back to where he had been before, his attention never leaving the gaggle of metallics, even as his eyes slid away.

Waste?

Waste!?

The Orange Slice Egg exploded in a thousand shards, revealing a red-eyed bronze. The creature took but one moment to shake off the excess shells and egg-goo, before bounding through the throng of Candidates. He was as careful as he could be around the Candidates, but his course was clear.

Though Avocado Green had gone over to another clutchmate, he could not--would not--hold back a rebuke.

Hold thy tongue! The bronze puffed out his chest and spread his wings, staring down his smaller green sister with a reproachful look. This could not--would not--be allowed. Though it was clear he was attempting to put her in his place, he was not necessarily being cruel about it. He was a bronze, after all, she but a green--but the red in his eyes did serve as warning. What waste is it for her to seek out Hers in her fashion? Is it not her role--I dare say, all of our roles--to seek out Ours? Perhaps you and our dearest, white-eyed sister might do the same. He did offer 90s Picture Day Green a gentle croon.

Orange Slice's body language was, of course, clear. He would not brook further insult to his golden sister.

- - -

Of course, No. 2 Pencil I hardly thought twice of the affair. She had her gilded accessories--let her sister say what she would for now. This gold had places to be and things to see. She gave a stretch of her eggs, draping a wing each across her metallic siblings. Shall we then? I can't wait to see the latest fashions. White, with perhaps a hint of red and green, is clearly in style. So many Candidates--but she had hoped for more.

Dehka - He/Him

"I'm okay." He hastily reassured Nuamia, summoning up an awkward grin. "I'll make sure to get it looked at later..." She was right, though. Moving too far away wouldn't be ideal, either. And that.... was when everything seemed to erupt into chaos. Twin dragons were hatching--twin golds had hatched, and it seemed as though the brown and bronze that had been fighting had found Theirs...? "Oh." Dehka breathed for a moment, watching as the wounded brown moved to Haveli. So she'd finally found Hers, after all this time. That was good--he was very glad for that.

And then the bronze surged forward, shaking Juhvek until he fell like little more than a doll to the sands. Someone was screaming--a girl, and a blue charged over as though to comfort her. Dehka's face had gone pale, and he stood still, unable to keep from staring at the boy's broken body. Just like that, he'd...

Swallowing thickly, his eyes snapped up as another egg burst free, and the red-eyed bronze swiftly approached his green sister. The boy anxiously found himself holding his breath, his own minor hurts completely forgotten as he struggled to keep calm.

Hunthyex - He/Him

He didn't hesitate to obey the summons once it was announced, but he surely hadn't expected it to be enforced by one of two golden sisters! Hunthyex eyed the metallics as they gathered, noting them and their movements. Suddenly, and he wasn't sure what had triggered it, the Lisa Frank bronze moved in an incredible display of power and speed to savage one young man. Dead? No--unconscious, but Hunthyex had no doubt the injuries would be severe.

He almost shook his head. The bronze had been offended in some way, and here was a stark reminder of what the consequences could be. Poor fool. Hunthyex doubted there would have been time to get out of the way, even if he'd tried.

Oh dear. The No. 2 Pencil II gold gave a soft creel. Where she had been attempting to quiet the fires on the Sands, she now found herself with quite an inferno. Not that she anticipated that Orange Slice bronze would act out of line. Tucked in against her sister's side, she watched the proceedings with a hint of concern. She was not in any distress, yet...

Matters were occurring that did not quite sit well with the queen. For the moment, the held her tongue, a living, breathing accessory to her twin. Such a thing did not offend her, but she was a little perturbed by what she saw. It was not yet time to interfere, however... if a time would present itself.

For his part, Lisa Frank bronze was perfectly content to ignore the ridiculous on goings, not at all worried about the opinion of a sister so far removed from his own station. Yes, let's. There are so many remaining that we haven't met. And wouldn't it be just the thing to indulge in some sight seeing?

Her calm comfort never once cracked as Avocado green lifted her head from where she'd been checking on 90's Picture Day green gently, but she locked eyes with Orange Slice bronze silently and held them. Presumptuous of him, but she didn't care. There were more important things happening and she wasn't afraid of him. The three involved had already moved on.

Oranie - She/Her

Everything had been fine. The dragons were attacking one another and swiping at Candidates, but--well, these things happened, didn't they? F'dral's lessons hadn't been a waste, and if Oranie's hands shook a little, it was simply from the nerves and excitement of it all.

And then Juhvek was in the air, held by the jaws of the bronze as it shook him until there was a crack before it let him go, and then--

She faintly registered the sound of Elibrie screaming, but she was unable to tear her eyes away from the sight Juhvek's prone body. Her breath began to escape in shallow gasps, and for one dizzying moment, she thought she might vomit. Was he... was he--? Oranie quickly drew her arms around her sobbing sister, tears streaming down her own face even as Juhvek was taken off the sands. "It's okay," She whispered through wooden lips, mechanically trying to soothe her sister even though it was a lie. "It's okay." It wasn't. It might never be again. But she had to keep Elibrie safe..

Suddenly, her sister pulled away. Panic flooded through her for a moment, terrified that Elibrie might do something to earn the ire of the bronze. Oranie froze as she realized a dragon was right there, staring at her for just a single moment before it wrapped a delicate wing around her sister. Baffled, it took an almost embarrassingly long time for her to understand what had happened. Her sister had Impressed.

"Oh, Elibrie." Her voice broke, for the little blue was beautiful. The entire moment should have been beautiful, but it was ruined by the blood still staining the sands.

Cetra - She/Her

Cetra hadn't realized she was holding her breath when the Lisa Frank bronze had picked up one of the boys and shaken him viciously, her eyes following his ragdolled body as it was tossed aside in a broken heap. She'd not been standing for all that long, but in that moment she felt a sense of utter mortality that she'd never really let seep in. After all, stubbornness was a strong thing in the girl and Cetra had always stared down things bigger than her. She'd been determined to surmount them at all cost.

But she also was keenly aware that if she'd been in that man's place, she'd have been dead without a fight. It made the color drain from her already pale face. Admittedly, she was thankful when the healers retrieved him, sending off a hopeful wish for the not-quite-stranger (all of her fellow candidates were at least familiar at this point) to be alright before she forcibly steeled her thoughts to be steady, kind, and admittedly not focused sharply upon the metallic trio who were about to make their rounds to look over the candidates.

She'd stand a little taller if they got too close to her, though, out of a fearful respect.

----

Lihyo - She/Her

Lihyo had regarded the mauling with a sort of clinical disconnect - mostly to protect her own feelings, no matter how much some part of her heart wanted to bleed and go out for her fellow. She didn't want to justify the young man's pain, but she did pull herself from staring at it, turning her attention sharply to focus elsewhere. On unhatched eggs, on the twins who were curled up together with a third sister having joined them in a pile of affection and support.

It was calming, sort of. Her nerves felt like their edges were on fire and while she knew the feeling, it had been a long, long time since she'd felt it so noticeably.

-----

Midrymear - He/Him

Admittedly, while the results were disastrous, Midrymear couldn't help but wonder idly what Juhvek had done so wrong to earn the ire of the bronze who had seemingly wanted nothing but to look over all of the boys and find the one that was his appropriate match. Part of him wondered if he'd deserved it in a way Midrymear himself would have understood.

But it wasn't a candidate's place to know how or why a dragon thought the way they did - and he wouldn't pretend it either. But if he relaxed a little when the bronze left to accompany his golden sisters, he'd didn't notice it. He stood firm and waited.

-----

Beelim - He/Him

Beelim hadn't expected Divisti to come so close to where he'd joined the other boys in assembling for Lisa Frank Bronze's inspection and nearly jumped again at the sound of her voice. He'd been a little transfixed by the whole incident with Juhvek, and looked a little green around the gills. Maybe it was a good thing he hadn't eaten before this.

"Yeah, I'm..." he took a deep breath, "just a lot." he decided finally. He had a lot of feelings.

Faesinger

----
Niika - She/Her

Niika didn't miss the maulings, even if they made her hold her breath. She pulled her eyes away to look elsewhere, like upon the roaming trio of metallics....or that increasingly desperate looking green who had hatched first and had quickly fallen out of the graces of attention she so desired and deserved. Was she looking for someone in particular? Oh, she didn't dare guess when all of these candidates were long strangers to her.

90s Picture Day green nuzzled against her twin sister, trying to soothe and cajole her. My dear sweet sister... never fret. You will never be alone. I'm here. Attempting to smother all other things out of her sister's mental and emotional view, the green projected pure love and acceptance to her frightened twin. Ignore them. Pay attention to me.

Haveli + Brown Sathanaseth

I'd like a bit more meat. Haveli had only started to oil down her dragon when he piped in his opinion, eyes whirling a few flecks of yellow as if to echo his distress. It wasn't as bad as he was making it out, he knew that and she knew it as well, but the way Sathanaseth was carrying on was enough to make Haveli raise an eyebrow in doubt. I'm bigger than I look so my stomach is bigger than it looks. Haveli's other eyebrow raised itself. You know you could just feed me a little more and then oil me and we can leave. I don't want to loiter around for too long, not when I know that lot is coming.

Maybe he really hadn't had enough? Haveli had been so thorough in cutting the meat into bite-sized chunks that maybe it looked s though she'd given him more than she actually had. That hunger still gnawed at her guts and mingled with her own, all the while threatening to get worse if his mood soured. Best to feed him now, Sathanaseth seemed to be saying, rather than attempt to do so when it was crowded with other dragonets. Especially that piece of sh-

"Okay, fine. A bit more won't hurt you." Hopefully whoever was watching the meat table wouldn't snark at her for coming back, or tell her she was wrong, considering they'd only just stepped away and the color of hunger still decorated her dragon like a blanket. "No more begging after this though, okay? I don't you to develop that habit."

Sathanaseth snorted, seemingly offended. I never beg.
